My Spanish communist grandfather had to flee into France after the Republicans lost the civil war to Franco's fascists. After the Nazis invaded, he was induced into the Resistance. At one point, he was captured by the Gestapo, brutally beaten and left for dead lying in the street. A french family took him nursed him back to health over months. My grandfather was young, extremely fit and they were actually right in their suspicion about his being an insurgent. Dr. Al-Bursh was 49, surgeon healing the sick in nightmarish situations at evidently vast personal risk, and his Israeli captors seem to have treated him even worse than the Gestapo tortured my actual terrorist grandfather. (He was later caught again, taken to Mauthausen concentration camp, and weighed 30kg when it was liberated. I should not exist, statistically speaking.)

I can’t see this wonderful man’s face without crying. I remember him before he was captured and murdered by the IDF and he just radiated humanity, dignity, kindness and decency.
