Plenty of that was from ska, rocksteady, and reggae. "Guns of Brixton," ". . . Hammersmith", and "Revolution Rock" are closer to those genres than dub proper.

Dub is still so interesting. It's incredible what was being composed in the studios on the island of Jamaica in the 70s. Apart from the fact that it's musical language in its own right - never mind that it influenced musical studio engineering around the world and across so many musical styles. You just cannot ignore that comes from the roots and culture narrative about injustice. And it was undoubtedly born of the Rastafari faith, undoubtedly African drum and percussion based. Produced in Jamaica for a disillusioned UK youth, mostly first generation Brits with Jamaican/Carribbean/Reggae music connections, and living under racist oppression in the only homeland to grow up in. Poverty, inequality, and a unique set of cultural circumstances put you in a difficult place regards to food, musical heritage, socialisation, education, authority, the general public and the media pressure was not typically British for you if we're who you were. First generation. Back to the dub, and to the Jamaican music business of the day. Dub provided the opportunity for so many versions by so many artists to produce a variety released versions of a particular song on a variation of the same riddim (rhythm). The joy of the music and/song was not locked up in copyright anywhere like in the developed world where creativity tightly enforced for by mega music publishers. However, recognision for creative results and the rewards did not get shared in justly fashion.

1970's East London, Bass speakers hanging out of windows, the smell of Sensi', Gabicci tops, Lois Jeans, Adidas Gazelle and these sounds filling the air. My dad went to the flat under us at 1am to politely ask them to turn it down a touch... 3 hours later he returned , proper happy and drunk. Racial harmony existed back then even though the race riots were very prevalent and there were some questionable attitudes and television programs. Today seems quite different if I'm honest. I would visit every opportunity mostly because of the Blueses. £2 newspaper wrap from Railton Rd. then to the early hours in a pokey smoky room that was 50% sound system. My companions on the dole, lucky night when we had 2 cans of Brew between us. Jamaican blokes of all ages. These 3 seriously naive baby bleach-white punks. Soon welcomed in as friends, simply because we loved the sounds. Good times. Well, I did witness two riots & a lot of fret from the Bill down there. (Many years later I lived for a year nearby. Same blues just off Coldharbour Lane not that different, except more white folks - not there for the sounds - prossies :)
