Really enjoy your videos and the way you dissect things. I don't even know anything about this pony stuff, but that just shows the universal appeal of what you're doing. I would suggest a collaboration sometime, but I have no idea what that might be. Keep up the good work.

You know, seeing all of the little tidbits, details and things that could be overlooked without closer inspection, it's really made me appreciate just how much time and effort is put into the animations of the show. It's also made me less of an impatient ass when the show needs to have two to four weeks for a new episode. :)

Basically, with the "Swap Symbol" command I can easily replace one symbol with another and keep the same position, rotation, etc... That way I can replace a copy of the beads with sparkles and the animations automatically line up.

Great video. The sparkles at the end were a nice touch to finish it off. All the show clips you used to illustrate what you were saying were amusing. "Their (AWESOME) magic" was hilarious, and Fluttershy's reaction to us venturing out of Flash.

Symbols are basically just boxes that hold artwork. So once I animated the beads (or really the boxes they're in) I can just make a copy and change the artwork so that it keeps the same animation.

The one thing that I REALLY appreciate about these videos is primarily of the helpful suggestions that we see throughout, but I also really enjoy his way of expression and voice. Im currently in a speech class and the way he projects his voice is also key to what makes these analysis helpful. His voice isnt just a plain monotone that is telling us what to do, but it has feeling as if he is actually showing us the route to success. All in all I just wanted to say your voice projection is pro.

After Effects and Flash slot really well together. Since After Effects can import SWF files, there's a few things I'm looking to show in the future I can't do otherwise. As for learning AE, I suggest watching a lot of videos on sites like Video Copilot. There's a lot more good, free AE videos out there than Flash ones.

Not unless you want to export the effect as an image sequence with an alpha channel and import it back in, but then it won't be vector anymore. You lose a few options if you don't output to video at some point.

As impressed as I am by your ability to recreate effects from the show, I have to say that what surprised me the most is the capabilities of modern animation and effect editing software. It's no wonder why more and more animation are done on Flash after seeing your video demonstrations.

At 8:40 -ish right before it cuts to the next shot. The magic effect on Twillight's mic goes away for a few frames. Also, I learned somethin' new from the AE stuff you showed. Thanks~ Keep up these videos, they're great. The most interesting one imo was the FMA one you did about composition. You should have a video showing multiple composition shots from any show. I'm really interested in that anyways.

It's weird, everyone seems to give the impression that Flash is harder to learn than After Effects, but I self taught myself how to use Flash relatively easily. After Effects, on the other hand, is something I have no experience with even though I have access to it, and it seems like something that I'll take a while to understand. (When I finally bother to get over the the initial seemingly overwhelming aspect to it, that is.) Loving the videos, by the way~

I'm quite sure you can do the melting in Action Script. A class that list all the shape and symbols that need "magic" and merge them when they are closer. Can't you just create symbols on the fly with Action Script? Analyse the shapes, distance, radius of effect and so on and create a single symbol over the whole screen that covers objects in need of magic.

Your tutorials are great! I was wondering if you could do one about how they (roughly) animate character's wings. I've also been watching "My Little Bloopers: Mistakes are Forever" and I noticed there were several odd wing errors. In one, the wings stop syncing up and they wind up having one down wile the other is up. In another, Rainbow Dash gains two extra feathers for a couple frames.

3:00 Really sums up whenever I hear about After Effects. I have decent experience with Flash in the past, however After Effects just really looks like there's a lot more stuff that surrounds it compared to Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash (Same way Dream Weaver does too, but that's beside the point.). How hard (or easy) was it to get the hang of After Effects? Is it similar to any other major editin' softwares? What kind of relationship does After Effects have with Flash?

Took me a while to get it, but i think i see whats happening. Unfortunately you probably need to create a new magic effect for each unique shape such as a Full-Body Pony shape, [I think] Or a shape for a pair of scissors. But once you have them you can re-use them. Actually i may be wrong even there. Is there a way that you can make the outlines of the magic effects stick together like reverse mitosis? If so, how is that achieved? Because if THATS the case, you just need all the basic shapes.
