Principally because it was a city built entirely on one industry (textiles) which even a century ago was in terminal decline. In the 1960s the UK government and businesses tried to make what was left of the textile industry more competitive. They updated machines and invited people from South East Asia to work for low pay and lower conditions in the mills. This didn't really work. By the 80s most mills were shut. By the 90s the industry was totally obsolete. They never replaced the textile industry. This is a common problem when you build towns entirely on one industry. Ex textile towns and ex coal towns are always the poorest places in the UK.

Given the harm we see corporations do it's essential farms stay out of the hands of corporations like Monsanto and individuals like Bill Gates. And to note, Jeremy has made this point many times, you need a larger farm to make profit, he couldn't make profit off a 1,000 acre farm in his first year, and look at all the schemes he comes up with to try and achieve it. It's incredibly difficult. Then there's the land on his farm which isn't farmed, therefore reducing the amount of workable land area. Everyone should be terrified of the corporates taking over the countryside. It creates a huge loss of generational knowledge about the land, farming knowledge, breakdown of rural communities and more. The inheritance tax is absolutely a full-on attack of the English way of life. But it's very clear that Keir, the elite class tool Makers son, doesn't care about his own nation.

I drove through Bradford by mistake a few years ago (took a wrong turn) and have never want go there again, it feels like a foreign country (close to third world) and I have never felt so uncomfortable.
