I'd love to see the MPG with all that black smoke. I worked on a ship with two 16V251E's and we'd get a smoke show like that every time we went hard astern to slow down.

An RSD 15 would look good in the old BC Rail two-green paint scheme...

Just wait until this thing is repainted into the original Bluebonnet scheme.

Is the engineer using a bit of automatic or independant brake to load the prime mover up to get that much smoke? Since all the cars are likely empty, the tonnage would not likely put the 251 on a load to create that much smoke. I used to put a bit of independent on the MRHS NW2 12V567A to load the engine. Made lots of whitish/blue smoke. The spectators loved it.

That's about Par for what and ALCO could do for smoke

Can someone please explain to me why the ALCO diesels smoked so badly? That’s WAY too much smoke even from that big of a Diesel engine. It’s just asking to wash the cylinders and coke up the valves.
@tomlowe85635 жыл бұрын
Chevyblock 550 ok so if you can imagine an electric drill and you are drilling hard brick the drill will begin to struggle the harder you push on it the same thing can happen with a generator which is what is supplying electricity to the locomotive. Basically when the driver opens the throttle the Diesel engine loads the generator to supply the electricity and so does the turbo on the engine it is here where the smoke is produced because the turbo has to play catch up but it's the load that kills the turbo causing what's known as turbo lag and as it's catches up the smoke is the results as the fuel has to play catch up too.
@wednesdayfrog1393 жыл бұрын
ALCOs had severe turbo-lag, I don't know why ALCO was too lazy to fix their turbolags...

@desertbob68355 жыл бұрын
No turbo will do it every time.
@nomon957 жыл бұрын
this isnt normal,,,Alco doesnt smopke at high engine rpm,,,,yes at low rpm,,,,sure turbo failed.
