Love this commentary. This conversation is very timely Maverick. So many countries across the Caribbean region are implementing grooming policies in schools to allow for the wearing of afrocentric hairstyles. Get with the programme of decolonization of education GC Foster College. It always amazes me when such issues emerge out of Jamaica. A country which should be at the forefront in promoting the acceptance of our black identity and culture.

Agreed this is ridiculous. If we agree that more females are enrolled in Universities than males do we want to bar males from University over something so trivial? Yes rules exist but as the society evolves we must amend the rules to fit within the modern paradigm. In 2024 we are barring someone from University for hairstyle. Additionally, implicitly in what was said having braids, twist etc is tantamount to bad grooming. And explain this we both have long dreadlocks, but I have a paper saying I and Rasta and the other persons does, so I am accepted and the other rejected, when essentially we have the same hairstyle. Kmt, foolishness, get rid of the colonial rule.

@OralTraceyMaverick Maverick, the issue at hand is that Wilson wants to compete against Micro College and other institutions in Jamaica. When it comes to teachers, they are expected to embody a certain professional image. For instance, if a male teacher arrives at an interview sporting cornrow hairstyles, it’s important to keep in mind that the school principals may adhere to old-school values. Even if the teacher possesses the necessary qualifications, they may still be perceived as lacking professionalism, leading to the likelihood that the position will be awarded to a candidate who appears more polished. In this scenario, two teachers interviewed for a position-one from GC Foster and one from Micro. Despite the GC Foster candidate being more qualified, the grooming and presentation of the Micro teacher ultimately swayed the decision in their favor, highlighting how appearance can impact hiring decisions in educational institutions striving to present role models to their students.

Why argue with the principle? Go argue with the parliamentarians. Provided that GC Foster is funded from the public purse, the principal should not have the right to implement such rules. It is full time that our parliament pass a law to deal with grooming and dress codes in public schools. The school is not own by the principle. Additionally, the issue of grooming and dress codes can be very subjective.

I have to disagree with the Maverick on this one, there are rule and guidelines in society that we may not agree with, but for us to make way in this world sometimes we have to conform and adhere..I attended teachers college and tbh would rather keep my long hair, but I understand that the choice for me is either keep my long hair and not employed and cut my hair and stand a better chance of securing a job...the institution is responsible for preparing the students to be favorable candidates for employment and apart of that is to be presentable and conform to society's rules..listen, if we start to accept long hair for professionals what else are we gonna be accepting towards...maybe next thing you'll hear is that its fine to wear your pants below u bottom because it doesn't affect your ability to do you job..

The fact that the student enrolled themselves into the school, knowing that this was a rule and proceeded to break the rule just did not sit well with me and a sumn we as who we are in our culture always do. We have our rights and always give it away. If they enrolled into the school knowing it was rule, why not approach the administration from there and take up whatever issue we have from thier than just a try be unruly and nobody cant tell we nothing type of vybz and make situation worse. The ppl them have them rule and stipulation from how long but we chose not to follow it because nobody fi give we chat. Why not take that up prior or call and explain why than just break the ppl them policy willingly. Again me no agree with that type of rule at all but me sure know there are other cases where ppl just no follow the ppl them rule just because we have a problem with it than going to them directly to address the situation.
