Numbing ungodliness. Four attitudes: 1. Authoritarianism - telling them one thing and living another as their leader. 2. Exclusivity - do as I say, but do it yourself without my help. 3. Affirmative hunger - watch me as I do what I do, and you are not worthy to be in my presence. 4. Entitlement - I deserve your attention and love. "You might be a Pharisee if...." Eight woes. (Six? Maybe I missed something.) "Ezekiel mode." Trusting in religious activity rather than trusting in God. v. 13. Controlling the gate for the sake of power. v. 14. Using religious words to take advantage of the poor, weak and unsuspecting. (Remember the widow's mite.) v. 15. Making proselytes, not disciples. v. 16. Making up their own rules and loopholes. Like lawyers. v. 23. Focusing on minutiae and missing the big point - following Jesus. v. 25, 26. Enforcing compliance rather than encouraging obedience. Compliance is for relief from harassment. Behaviors. Obedience is for the right reasons. Heart change. A parent can't always tell which is the attitude of a child.
