Great video Shawn. Awesome job GCF! If you pre-drill a 3/4" or bigger hole on the lower spot where you are coring, a lot of the water inside the curb will be alleviated. Face your core drill trigger up and use a tile spade as a lever (of course not too much) to put pressure on your drill. Helps to keep the operator dry-er-ish. You know what I mean. Core drilling and sawing concrete are never "clean" jobs

I would like to add that local road agencies may not like those locally maintained curbs being cut or cored. Flowing water onto the road can cause icing and accelerating deterioration of the pavement surface. Since every place is different, it should be said that folks watching should always follow their local ordinances before cutting or digging close to the road. I do want to commend the post work inspection in the rain. Nothing beats actual rain to verify a good job. Great video overall.
@GCFD3 жыл бұрын
Great points Jessee. The city here doesn't mind tying into the street because they are part of the storm water management system. We don't get much ice in this part of NC.
@castarmax19703 жыл бұрын
@@GCFD The city actually says otherwise... "No person, firm, or corporation shall remove, alter or construct any driveway, curb, gutter or pavement, or perform any other improvement on any public street or dedicated street right-of-way without permits authorizing such improvements." They also say. "Whenever any person shall do or undertake to do any of the things set forth in this Manual, it shall be the responsibility of such person to protect from harm and damage all persons who may be using any street or sidewalk or other public place where such activity is in progress; and to that end such person shall erect and maintain suitable signs, lights, barricades and other traffic control devices at the proper location where such work is in progress. These safeguards shall be applied in accordance with the current Work Area Traffic Control Handbook (WATCH) available from the Greensboro Department of Transportation. " Not to mention you can't put condensate drains to walkways. Almost no PPE even when cutting the sidewalk or using the sledgehammer. That 4" pipe in your area is good for 2600sq ft of roof. No idea how big the house is but I'm guessing it's under that. I have tore out many gutters, curbs and sidewalks that was altered/poured by a contractor or hack without being bonded or without permits. I guess you made a few bucks so the rules don't apply to you. You may think otherwise if you get sued because a kid slipped on the algae from the condensate drain or the curb now breaks because it's weakened.

Nicely done! Couple of questions: 1) I didn't see any cleanout points installed. If a clog develops inside the pipe, do you just have to snake the whole thing? 2) Would you consider placing a screen at the curb to keep rodents from crawling up inside? 3) It looks like the pipe meets the curb at a 90-degree angle as viewed from above. Would it be a good idea to angle the pipe toward whichever side of the street flows downhill? (looks like the left side as you face the house). This would presumably help the water flow toward the storm drain, and help street water from uphill not to enter the pipe.
@GCFD3 жыл бұрын
Great questions. 1 - There is enough space between the downspout and the PVC coupling to fit a jetter hose or snake in if it's never needed. We do install cleanouts if requested, but they cost a little more and have a very industrial look to them. 2 - No, we keep the outlet open so it doesn't collect debris flowing through and out of the pipes. The smooth inside and bright white don't attract rodents and the slightest rain produces a flood of water through the pipe. 3 - yes, we could absolutely do that to help with the flow. Thanks for your comments - Shawn

Should you put a check valve in the condensate line to make sure you don't fill the drain pan during a storm? Genuine question.
@GCFD3 жыл бұрын
Good question. The line is higher than our pipe so it should be good. There's a float switch on the pan of all air handlers in case it does fill up. That switch will kill power until the clog is removed and the pan drains down.

@@GCFD that's what I was thinking could be a nuisance if it filled it and shut the unit off. In theory I guess your drain pipe would have to be completely full or even clogged for the pipe to back up and have the pressure to push up the condensate line. Unlikely

Unlikely as it might be it's definitely worth considering these points. It's exactly what I do with the homeowner when making decisions like this. Thank you for bringing up this important point Mike! - Shawn

@@GCFD The water will fill up the pipe to the level of the top of the lowest connection to the gutter down pipes if there is a blockage downstream.

Not sure why I landed on this channel but enjoyed the content! Suggestion on the core drill for pressure. Use a breaker bar or any other long handled tool and stick it a little in the ground behind the drill and then use it as a lever to help put pressure.

Excellent and video. How much does something like that cost, minus concrete cutout/repair? Just a ballpark. Thanks!
@GCFD3 жыл бұрын
I would ballpark 3-5k.

I've DIY'd a number of properties with schedule 40, 4" PVC to the curb. And, yes, a bored curb makes the job so much more professional. And double yes, coring from the backside is a royal pain in the backside. But, there's just no other way to do it and have the results look as good. So, I'll continue to eat muddy water every time I do another one. ;-)
