MIPS, innovations like these, aero dynamics and ventilation are the only reason to pay premium price. Otherwise a 160 quid helmet is the same as a 30 quid helmet. To put it mildly: big brand helmets are usually overpriced for what they are.

Nope. But I've heard of diminishing returns, especially of the financial kind, and that not every wielrenner cares about doing laps. Some just want to get out there and have some fun, not worrying about upgrading their gear, you know?

Ivar Brouwer I do agree that some helmets are way overpriced. I would say safety features, comfort, and aesthetics are the main reasons why a the general consumer would want to spend more money on a helmet. To most people, aerodynamics don’t matter much, but it probably brings up the prices, because wind tunnel testing is pretty expensive.

Have a Giro Synthe MIPS (Medium) and Air Attack - Good helmets overall. 59cm oval-ish noggin just slides in the Medium with a headband; Large holds on pretty well to bare head and allows for more cold weather gear. Lacks the luxury adjustments of KASK, but closes down comfortably without pressure points and air circulates well, even in the Air Attack (no visor).

That’s a really really nice helmet. Giro os Abus are my next brand, i haven been using a Spiuk Adante (with MIPS and all that stuff) for the last months and I’m not happy with it, colour has gone, sweat sponges have worn and Spiuk does not apply the warranty. Not good for a 150€ helmet, but definitely better than the 30€ helmet that i had before.

The aether helmet is awesome! Very cool sleek design! Yes I want one! Better yet I need one! What's cooler than let the public design their own! Say what! Giro to me makes awesome helmets! I really like the fit around the back of the head! Glad the ratchet doesn't look big and clunky! And the straps look good too! I hate a good looking helmet with ugly straps! I wish giro would use the same padding in football helmets! The orange stuff! Very soft and comfortable and very safe! I hope they see this! I want to visit the design department! Please giro!

I’ve heard 3-5 years as a general rule of thumb as well. Sunlight doesn’t affect breakdown of the styrofoam, but only bleaches certain colorways over time. If You carry your helmet with you (attached to a backpack, etc.) on foot while commuting like I did, it will get some minor dents and bruises in the foam as well.

Hands guns only have one thing in mind and that's to shoot people. I think even the amount of cop shootings would go down if they couldn't carry a pistol. But as far as the crazy's that commit heinous acts go I don't care how many laws get passed they'll find a way to carry out harm if they really want to.

Could someone chime in recommending a good ventilated helmet for road cycling. I have been using a Ionos Large which fitted a little loose on my 58cm head. Recently bought a replica Aeon from AliExpress which the quality looks fine, but i'm paranoid that it will sustain and not crack into pieces in case of an accident. I would like to not spend a fortune on a helmet, but I do appreciate good ventilation when riding 100+ km rides, I was considering the Foray or the Savant, are those good choices, and how do they compare in ventilation against the Aeron/Synthe/Aether. P.S. Tried the Aether and love the design, but it's way too pricey. Thoughts?

Helmets are one time use after accident. I wouldn't use an expensive helmet if it's not significantly safer than a much cheaper equivalent.
@jonnythelegs2597
@jonnythelegs2597 5 жыл бұрын
Expensive Helmets have to pass all the same safety standards as cheap ones, what you get for your extra money is better ventilation, comfort, build quality, aerodynamics and slightly better safety and much better styling plus all the research thar goes into making helmets progressively better over time. So while new helmets may not be massively better on a year to year basis compare a modern one with one from around 20-30 years ago and you will find many large improvements. Just like bikes really with the exception of style as some classic bikes are superb to look at which you'd be hard pushed to say about helmets from 20-30 years ago. Though the Giro Air Attack SC with the tequila sunrise colourway was probably the best of a bad bunch back in the nineties.
@robertwong2412
@robertwong2412 5 жыл бұрын
@@jonnythelegs2597 These helmets are made of foam. They're so light you don't even realize you're wearing one, even the cheap ones. I don't see the point of making it better in areas where I don't get to look at them while riding and certainly don't see the point of spending so much money on one when in a crash i would have to throw it away as well and cheap ones protect equally well.
@jonnythelegs2597
@jonnythelegs2597 5 жыл бұрын
@@robertwong2412 as with most things the cheap ones only work so well because of the research and development done at the top end of the market then the consequential trickle down technology that eventually reaches it's way down the price brackets. The main thing is that you've chosen to wear one and put some kind of barrier between your head and the tarmac. If you ride hard or in hot conditions at speed then you'll certainly appreciate the aerodynamics and airflow that the higher end helmets provide and them now looking better from a fashion/vanity point of view more and more people that would otherwise feel too self conscious to wear one will hopefully join in and wear them. You've chosen the most important reason to wear a helmet which is safety without letting vanity get the better of you and for that I applaud you sir.

Since I saw the new 3D printed honeycomb helmets a little while ago I feel a bit flat about foam helmets no matter how gaudy the colour scheme may be. I think I can wait for better things to come. I also have that sneaking suspicion that GCN is becoming more and more like these product flogger channels on commercial TV. Si has the talent to become a star on that stage.

Could GCN do a short video on this supposed MIPS technology? I’ve have worked in neuro for a very long time and I understand the the anatomy and physiology of the brain. Frictional shearing of brain cells is caused by rapid deceleration/acceleration of the brain within the cranial vault. It has nothing to do with rotational force! I have tried to rationalise how Giro believe this works in practice but I cannot. Blunt force traum is your primary injury, which can lead to swelling and further damage to tissue. High speed injury, such as that seen in car accidents is caused by axonal shearing, where the brain is moved rapidly forward and back due to acc/dec as I previously mentioned. To the best of my knowledge, axons cannot “rotate” within the tissue structure. My problem is not with the helmets but with the extra cost they incur due to the supposed “tech” involved in their development. My helmet is my most important piece of PPE and I don’t mind paying but I am not sure the inflated price tag of these helmets sends the right message..... Rant over
@Zimmerh90
@Zimmerh90 5 жыл бұрын
Took me litteraly 1 min to find the papers on the research. As you may know the brain floats inside the head. MIPS try to reduce the actual rotational force that is acted upon your head (and hence your brain) just like a cars crash zone where the car crumbles to reduce the impact of the driver inside. Just you know search for the papers yourself.
@chinboy66
@chinboy66 5 жыл бұрын
Zimmerh90 problem is, what you just said, anatomically makes no sense as the brain and brain tissue do not “rotate” inside the skull vault due to trauma. Damage that causes shearing is due to rapid acceleration/deceleration of brain tissue, specifically axons which are torn when the brain is slammed back and forwards inside the skull. The angle of trauma is incidental, despite the research findings as all that is required is the right amount of force to cause cou-contracou injuries. In the 21st century, it still pays to question where research comes from and who is paying for it. Nothing I read leads me to believe there is anything to support, firstly the effectiveness of the technology and secondly the inflated price they charge for something that has no proven real world benefits. point being you hit your head hard enough to cause axonal shearing then the angle you are struck at is redundant so your $350 helmet won’t necessarily preserve your brain any better than your $150 one
@chinboy66
@chinboy66 5 жыл бұрын
Zimmerh90 ps, rotational force during head trauma is absorbed by your cervical spine far in excess of any value from a helmet that slips. In fact I am not sure a MIPS helmet would shift any more than a conventional one given it’s not nailed to your head. I read some research where the team debunked the theory that falls to the head were primarily square on contact but in fact that “research fact” never existed to debunk in the first place! Companies have been using “science” to flog their products for years. Caveat Emptor
