If the rear hub size don't change on a 12 speed version on road it should be possible to upgrade di2 software because limit screws are in the right place. Maybe one day I'll find a programmer who'd do that trick with di2 rear shifter for the my bicycle because there is already kcnc 12 speed cassette 😀

Having switched a few years ago from race cars to bikes, I had a bunch of old fluids lying around. When it came time to do my first BB replacement, I tried just re-packing the bearings with Redline CV2 axle grease. It works AMAZINGLY, and I've gotten almost 10K miles out of one set of bearings. In fact, the Enduro ceramic bearings I bought to replace them last summer only lasted about 3 months, and I ended up repacking and stuffing the originals back into the frame. So yes: you absolutely CAN improve the quality of a bearing by changing the grease, but you cannot make a crap bearing into an amazing bearing. You can only make a good one last longer.

In regards to machining a 11spd cassette to fit a 10speed hub. I have 10speed dura ace wheels so tried a dremmel to take off the 1.8mm but wasnt true so had to turn it flush on a lathe. This fitted a treat but the last sprocket wouldn't engage correctly and would spin when tightened with the lockring. Only way to fix it was to tig weld the last two together and this worked. Done a few thousand miles and have had no issues yet.

@Flavio Dul - I've been using Campag Veloce 10spd shifters with my 8speed Shimano group with absolutely no problems. just make sure you set your limiter screws so you can't shift into your spokes!! Look up "Shimergo". the ratios work perfectly - you can even use 9spd if you do a little trick with the rear derailleur cable but i haven't tried that yet.

I patch my latex tubes with regular butyl patches and standard patch glue. They hold just as well as patching butyl tubes and you don't need to scuff the tube first as the latex is a little rougher. It really works, making the high cost of latex worth it.

Regarding the topic of 11-speed cassettes on 10-speed wheels: Milling 1,85 mm off the carrier unterneath the largest sprocket is often a great solution if you can't mount a 11-speed freehub on that particular wheel. But be aware of the fact that the largest sprocket will overhang the inner end of the freehub body even more, requiring the rear derailleur to move further inwards. Therefore it is vital to check the clearance between the rear derailleur and the spokes.
@ianhall6 жыл бұрын
I did this hack and although the derailleur is now very close to the spokes, it does work and it saved me a ton of money since the alternative would have been to re-lace the wheels.
@1Trojan20006 жыл бұрын
I have done this as well on 2 cassettes for my 10speed wheels with flawless success. Do watch that rear derailleur clearance in your lowest gear when first put it on. No clearance issues on an older 10sp HED tri-spoke, as one might imagine.

The ultegra R8000 11x34 cassette will fill 10 speed freehubs with out any modification. Most MTB 11 speed cassettes will also fill 10 speed freehub.
@skydave93176 жыл бұрын
I have done this with my dual purpose commuter/MTB. Millled 1.85mm off the back of a 105 cassette for my road wheels and they line up perfectly when I swap them for my off road wheels, which use a SRAM cassette on an XD freehub body. This is best done on a milling machine, not a lathe! Another option is to change the freehub if an 11 speed option is available for your wheels.
@skydave93176 жыл бұрын
Not all freehubs are created equal... Mavic 10 speed freehubs are longer than most others and will take an 11 speed cassette. The standard Shimano 11 speed MTB cassette is narrower than the road version (go figure!).

On the subject of chain rotation, I use the same logic by rotating cassettes. One cassette for the first half of the chain's life, and another for the second half. Much easier than rotating chains if you have no chain link (ie Shimano). Been doing it for four years, about 25,000kms, and it seems to work. The second cassette is wearing, but is always paired with a part worn chain so shifts smoothly. The first cassette is hardly worn at all and never used with a worn chain so shifts even better. You don't get anymore life out of your chains, but shifting remains consistently good. Eventually the 'second' cassette will be replaced, with the 'first' cassette becoming the 'second' and the new cassette becoming the 'first'. If that makes sense....

Half link chain allows for closer adjustment in chain length especially when there is limited space in frame dropouts or a rider wants to “slam” the rear wheel in the dropout. Half link chains are very heavy as well.

@paulk16456 жыл бұрын
John McLean If you are using just a double I'd suggest not a problem. However a triple might introduce anoyances. I ran a 10 speed crank with 9 speed drivetrain and found I had to introduce .7 mm spacers on the inner and outer chainring bolts. As you are going the other way. 9 to 10, I would not expect the same challenge. My challenge probably could have been overcome by using a 10 speed chain instead of the spacers.

Jon right now I'm rotating 4 new ultegra 11sp chains on a new 10sp Dura Ace (12-27) cassette (because they're $$$). I swap chains every 700 miles. Previously I was running always in the big ring and wearing out the 16&17 cog now I'm trying to stay in the small ring to see if I can put more wear on the 12,13,14,15,16 cogs. I'm good to 22 mph in the small 36 ring which is much cheaper than a DA7900 big ring. I haven't worn out any chains yet but will take each one out of service just after it hits .5 wear and I imagine by that time the cassette will be well worn after having 4 chains run over it.

@GCN Tech Jon, mostly you can turn you bike 180% on those tripod stands and use (like on the park tool stand) adapters to match the wider axle or like on my elite theres a second (wider) clamp to match it. so you are easily able to work on the front wheel 'things'. maybe a wheel holder is good for those situations.

Hi, So regarding the aeroplane and tyre pressure question.... The maximum allowed pressure altitude for airliner cabins (including the hold) is 8000ft which is a pressure differential inside the cabin of just under 3.8psi . Given that seal level pressure is 14.696psi and 8000ft is 10.92psi Assuming your tyres were inflated at sea level during an International Standard Atmosphere (ISA) day that means the differential would also be just under 3.8. So in that example as long as the max inflation pressure is 3.8psi more than what you have in the tyre that should be fine. However if you inflated the tyre not during an ISA day the differential could be greater or lesser depending on the atmospheric pressure of the day. The lowest commonly seen sea level pressure is the same as your house at the beach infact being 500ft lower and so unless you happen to inflate your tyre during a tropical low in a cyclone you can assume this is worst case. Even then the difference is only a shade over 4psi. So all told unless you inflate your tyres to within 5psi of your max inflation pressure you’ll be completely fine in almost all circumstances. Standing fast rapid decompression, but in that case I think your tyre popping off the rim is the least of your worries ;). It’s due to these tiny differentials that a packet of crisps for instance doesn’t pop when you go up in an airliner, but yet the small difference in oxygen partial pressure is thought to be the biggest contributed to jet lag. Explaining why frequent flyers tend to get less affected by the flight due to acclimatisation with mild hypoxia! However if you happen to live above sea level you’ll always be in a better situation, infact if you live somewhere really high up e.g Denver or Mexico City in almost all circumstances you could inflate your tyres to go flying as the cabin will be at a lower altitude than your home. Could I have just typed the dullest reply to a gcn tech thread ever? I don’t know....
@KWBZoersel_IH6 жыл бұрын
Hi In the past, when the combination tire and rim was very hard, I used gloves to prevent injuries on my hand. Now I put the tires some minutes in a bucket with very hot water, so the tire becomes very flexible. Especially when it's cold in your garage, this makes a huge difference. It would have been helpfull to explain how to inflate a tire with a CO2 airpump when you're on the road. It can freeze to your hand, the valve can freeze, pretty much elements to look at.

Campag 8 can go to early 9 (and run 7 with dead shift ona Shomano cassette), but due to G-Spring differences and shift spacing difference, only the later 9 can go to 10/11. IIRC, the "pointy" ergos can be 8/9, and the squarer ones are 9/10/11. Wheels are similar, the later 8spd will take a 9/10/11 freehub, the earlier ones have a different fitting, so are 8/9 (early) only. I have a set of 1996 Ventos originally 8Spd, running a 9/10/11 freehub quite happily for about 10 years and thousands of racing miles

Hi Jon Thanks for a great show. I must have short toes because I can never get the cleat far enough forward on the sole of the shoe to my ideal position.I use Look Keo pedals and have found by trial and error that Diadora shoes seemed to be drilled further forward than other makes. This is only a partial solution if I could move the cleat a mm or so forward then I could get my full power to the pedals. I have considered machining or even filing the slots but I would think this would weaken the cleats. Do you know of any solutions?

jon, you can rearrange campy shifters by putting different pals inside,another reason why I like campy you can put 11 speed cass on a 9 speed freehub..as for cleat bolts I use silicone glue you will never loose a bolt and they will still turn out. Been riding tubs since the 70s never heard or saw a pinch flat or snake bite as some would call it,dont see how its possible due to get one the tube needs to get between the bead of the tire and the rim lip for that split second since tubs are glued on there is no rim lip and the tube is incased in the tire between the tread and casing..

@paraicf hi, I have a similar problem. I run an 11 speed system and I have an older wheel which I use on my roller with a roller specific tire. The old wheel is 10 speed. I got an 11 speed cassette, removed 1 sprocket and I added a washer that came with my new set of wheels that would allow me to use a 10 speed cassette on an 11 speed wheel. It works like a charm to me, but I have to remember not to use my easiest gear on the roller because it does not exist and the chain would fall in between the cassette and the spokes. It's a hack or a bodge, I still cannot define it. Cheers.

Suggested correction on swapping from one brand of cleat to the other; You have to reference the center spindle mark on the side of the cleat for fore/aft position reference between brands, not measuring the physical "center" on the cleat as suggested in the video. There is a fair amount of difference between brands on where the center spindle mark falls in relationship to the physical center of the cleat. Putting the ball of the foot back in the exact position relative to the center of the spindle is the most important measurement when changing out cleat brands.

Most Shimano compatible MTB 11-speed cassettes I can think of will fit on a 10-speed Shimano hub - although that might be a bit too much gear without other adjustments - and, I believe, the new Shimano HG-800 11-34T 11 speed will as well (has a spacer to fit on 11-speed Shimano road hubs).. that might be not quite so extreme.

Regarding the tubeless tyres in air-transport the aircraft cargo hold is not pressurised, or heated so it would be prudent drop the pressure by 1 bar if near the maximum.
@rogercollingwood82346 жыл бұрын
Of course passenger aircraft cargo holds are pressurised to the same pressure as the passenger accommodation - this is the equivalent air pressure as an altitude of 2000m to 2400m depending on the plane. There is absolutely no need to reduce the pressure in the tyres that are being transported by plane unless specifically told to do so by the airline. If there was a problem with tyres bursting because of the reduced ambient pressure then we would also need to reduce tyre pressure for big mountain climbs.

The new bike I'm planning to buy comes with a 52/36 chainset and 11-28 cassette (Ultegra DI2). However, I'm usually climbing a lot, and on some of those epic climbs I use every millimeter of the lowest gears on my current 50/34 + 11-32 setup. So, my #askgcntech question is: can I somehow adapt the cassette to be 11-36 and that way perhaps get a similarly low gear? It seems to me like that could be a cheap(er) solution, and also retain the flexibility that the 52/36 offers otherwise. Thanks, and keep up the good work! Love all of GCN Tech so far.

On the subject of 11 speed cassettes on 10 speed Shimano hubs. Like the man asking Jon about Shimano RS80 wheels, I too have a Shimano RS80 rear wheel. I recently upgraded to Ultegra R8000 mechanical, the complete groupset. I also have a Dura Ace 7900 C24 rear wheel. I think the Edco cassettes are too expensive. Up around €200. I wouldn't dream of using a lathe on a Shimano hub or cassette. I think you're asking for trouble. Shaving 1.8 mm off is going to seriously weaken the hub or cassette. I modified my 11 - 30 Ultegra R8000 11 speed cassette by simply removing 1 sprocket. Yes, I don't have 11 gears on the back wheel, obviously its 10 speed now. In order to secure the cassette lockring with enough torque and fill the gap left after removing 1 sprocket - I placed two 10 speed ( 1 mm in width) 'behind the cassette spacers' behind the modified 11 speed cassette. I've heard of other people using the spacer between cassette sprockets ( 2.18 mm width). I didn't do this because it left slightly less room between the 11 tooth and the frame dropout. I made the necessary adjustments to my rear derailleur limit screws. I removed the 13 T sprocket. Yes people may scoff at the uneven jumps on my highest gears but I like my 14 T sprocket. I have a 52-36 Ultegra R8000 chainset. The rear shifting is brilliant. OK, I have 10 speed on a 11 speed system. Do I miss the 13 T? No I don't. So, if you're looking for a cost effective way of keeping your 10 speed Shimano rear wheel and using 11 speed cassettes, and don't mind not having 11 speed the above method works perfectly.

[Bearing Question] What if all bearing were ideal and there wasn't any resitance? I think that in general bike has many moving parts and from nature you couldn't make it more efficient. Maybe you could cut resisitance by 50% but it will be always something and those 50% less isn't something huge.

#askgcntech with regards to the di2 10/11 speed shifter compatibility question. I can understand that you would need a new derailleur to go to 11 speed, probably a longer cage etc. But the shifters are effectively just buttons, and if they have no programming in, does that not mean you could get a new rear mech, but keep the levers??

Shame you didn't get to examine those tubular tires. I just got a flat on a tubular tire after hitting a few potholes. I went on the lower end of the suggested pressure to help with bumpy paved trails. Couldn't tell if it was a pinch puncture since the sidewall was damaged from riding the flat tire home.

Question: When the pros have a puncture on their tubular tires, are the tires thrown away after one puncture or is it possible to fix and use them again?
@paulflory35326 жыл бұрын
I've done it. Obviously whether a tubular is repairable depends where the hole is, how big it is, and whether there is a corresponding gash in the casing. The surgery is time consuming, and sometimes I ended up with an unusable tire because the operation caused a bump. OTOH for a racer on a tight budget the price is right - my LBS saved punctured tires discarded from their customers bikes and donated them to me. I used patched tubulars for training only, never in a race.

#AskGCNTech Can you advise the most ideal drivetrain setup for a race age 9 cyclist? USA Cycling junior rules limit the roll-out distance to 26'. This is one crank turn much be less than 26ft of rear wheel travel. I'm considering a 52/36 crank - 14/28 cassette and 25x700c for my son who has a max 1 minute output of 95 watts :) With that kind of output I want to make sure he's got the correct available gears for flat and small climbs at 18+ mph average during 5k races. Thank Jon!

#askgcntech A bike fit question: What adjustment should be done if my leg is locked out at 5 o'clock position on pedal but in 3 o'clock position, the front plane of my knee is almost a centimeter behind the pedal axle? I have pulled my seat as far forward as possible but that did not help.

About that 10 speed to 8 speed lever conversion thing... I think the goal might be to have an 8 speed bike without the washing line in front. If that is the case you could simply use one of the new claris ST-R2000 shifters which are basically using the same technology as the st-r3000 sora, st-4700 tiagra st-5800 105 and st-6800 ultegra but just with 8 clicks and the same cable pull ratio as the old 8 speed stis as far as I reckon. So it should make up an 8 speed drivetrain with ANY 8,9 and 10(road) speed shimano rear derailleur. IIRC there should be a possibility to use some sort of campa lever too to get a shimano 8 speed drivetrain working, use a 10 speed campa lever for that IIRC, that should have roughly the right cable pull ratio.

Bearing Question! Can I use a 7902 bearing in the place of a 6902 bearing? dimensions are the same?
@Hambini6 жыл бұрын
It will physically fit in the same space but the 7 in 7902 indicates it's an angular contact bearing. Hence you will probably need a matching bearing to take axial load in the other direction. The 6902 is bi-directional. Hope that helps Hambini

Guys, is there a difference between a 10 gear chain breaker and an 11 one? I have a old one I used for 10 gear chain, but someone said it might not fit 11 gear... true?
