It didn't happen after 9/11, and it didn't happen after the 2008 housing crisis, so there's no reasonable to think it will happen now. The reality is rider participation within the sport is still up overall, even if some of the new C0vid participants have dropped off, so growth is still there relative to 2019.

Everyone is paying for the development of disc brakes which are utter shit. How can Specialized rationalise that a SL7 frame is $7000 Australian. Or z S-works with Durace is over $20,000. Look at the development inherent in a YZF450 engine clutch and gearbox, or a ZX10 Kawasaki or GSXR1000. Mate the bicycle industry has priced themselves out of their own genre. Admit it, they're pulling us OFF. And look at the supposed SL8 it's all junk. So what will an S-works SL8 be $23,000. Huge jump forward? Same headtube issues! It's just a joke. Strawberry Hills has a red hot bar of steel and plunging it into their own eye socket. Now we have bikes that are 10kg at entry not long ago they would have been 8kg for $2000. They are forcing disc brakes on the community so everyone can pay the development costs for they're racing teams because they are a completely unfinished product. Utter rubbish.

@@willkent4759 Top end stuff (silly money!!) selling, but budget bikes (yer, pull the other one at £1500 for Tiagra!) not moving out the door. Some brands (The big Yank and Far east brands) seem to have no stock but some local UK and EU stuff seems like it has little more availability, in the size and colour way you want. It's the same old story, the bike industry has made the bike the new golf and is now looking at selling less bikes to a ever shrinking demographic of those who have the cash to spend, keeping profits the same (or increasing) via bigger profit margins on each unit-bike sold. The margins on low and mid price bikes are not profitable to them! It is a death spin to the ground, if it continues they will run out of rich to sell to who can afford the markup and then they will crash and burn, its not going to go well, if they do not re focus and start looking at bikes that normal people can afford!

There are deals out there. I was recently looking to replace a cracked frame and was able to find a deal on a complete bike for less than the used one I had my eye on. I'll probably swap out some parts with what I have already but it was such a deal that it made more sense to do it than by the used one. I think there are more deals on the lower spec bikes than the higher ones but even the top end models you can get a tiny percentage off these days. It's better than nothing. If you're not concerned with the best then there are deals to be had. 9:54 TPC isn't giving sellers that much of an offer. They are totally low balling them. I submitted a 2022 S-Works Tarmac SL7 with full SRAM Red AXS that I had for only a few months and they offered me $2800. I LOLed in their face and fold it for thousands more on my own.

Other retailers in different industries have already gone through this... over buying during COVID and then blowing out inventory (and in some cases flat out salvaging it) drove some big profitability hits after a couple years of record sales and profitability. I'd expect sales to continue into next year and pricing in the used market to also come down. Additionally, the big OEM's need to rethink their pricing strategy... entry level road bikes are outrageously expensive and they need to reassess the market and figure out how to reduce prices or offer competitive products at a lower price point. Sram and Shimano are complicit in this as well. Others have mentioned but it really feels like the market is being left wide open for mechanical/rim/easy routing segment to return.

Layoffs are always unfortunate, and I feel bad for those affected. I'm wondering how the overstock applies across different types of bikes. For example, Specialized blew out its mtbs this year but I haven't seen any sales on the Crux. So unless I missed the sales on gravel and road bikes, it seems like Specialized had way more overstock for mtbs than other types of bikes.

These are not layoffs, they are firings. The term layoff was used back in the 50s and 60s. The automotive industry introduced new models every year, unlike today. The factory workers were layed off while the tooling for the new years models were installed. They were then brought back to create the new year models. Those were layoffs. What’s happening today in the bike industry are firings.

Even if you could afford to pay the ridiculous prices being demanded these days you might, like me, simply refuse to be ripped off. I would feel like an idiot shelling out car money on a triangle of carbon, 2 wheels and a groupset. What makes things worse in NZ is that even if you badly needed an SL7 there are none available. It feels like a lot of high end goods manufacturers these days are adopting the Rolex model. Make something unobtainable and desperate and some people will pay anything to get their hands on one. Brakes at minimum need the fluid fully flushed which is a PITA (frankly, I’d rather just throw them away and replace)-brake pistons could be sticky. Good chance it’s got a press fit BB & the bore is worn out, so the cups creak. etc., etc. I’d just pay a couple thousand more for a mid-level new bike which would be better in every way. All these folks saying 16k is too much. Yes i agree. For the vast majority of people, you dont even need bikes like that. Once you get to around 7k, then you get to more marginal gains. Most people wont get better after that. So 16k is ridiculous, for YOU. I would agree. Also, welcome to stupid voting.

7k is ridiculous for what you get at 7k in 2023. That's the point, not that people don't want to pay - you made a stupid mistake assuming that just because someone doesn't want to pay ridiculous prices means that they can't afford it.

It’s a crap time to be buying components, I’m waiting to order a new sram red chainset but why buy now and pay full retail for something that’s on the verge of being updated! I either wait and buy the newer version or buy the older when newer released on sale. So much Sram force D1 in retailers not moving as D2 arrived in the scene when shops had overstock of D1. It’s a crazy time to buy right now

Same with car or putyourdesiredindustryhere. Management wants to sell only models with large profit margins. E.G. only ultra high end bikes with highest tier components. Everbody would want to have a premium bike but only few can afford them. Industry needs to sell more decent entry level and mid tier products. And no, 3000 bucks is not a good entry level pricepoint for non-ebikes.

Predicting a surge in E-bikes in the next year. If prices drop as tech becomes less novel, and consumers realize their e-bike-shaped-objects are shite, sales will grow. Its just a hard sell for the uninformed consumer to shell twice the price for products they believe are comparable. Q's closure and layoffs blow. I love that company, and I wish their brands carried more market power, but again, customer looking for a commuter will get an FX or Cirrus over a Preamble or Journeyer.

I understand the TPC layoffs. I do NOT understand QBP. I feel like they are trying to sugarcoat it somehow by blaming it on excess inventory. Isn't "excess inventory" really an issue of "insufficient sales"? Are they afraid to say that?" It has long felt to me like QBP has an absolute monopoly on North America's bike parts distribution. This might make life easy for the manufacturers and the bike dealer network, but it kills competition and does not serve the consumer.

Unless you race for a living, the consumer doesn't need a $10K+ bike. Its not even like the overinflated car industry. Most people need a car. A bicycle is an elective purchase. I don't like electric shifting, integrated handlebars, press fit BB's or disc brakes on a road bike. I don't have any trouble keeping up with riders overpaying for products with little value added.

thats what I try to mention, all this stuff is basically not needed, it is a hobby. So when it comes down to it, no one is making the people buy the expensive stuff, the people who are either have boat loads of money or are smart with there money and this is something they love to do, I know people who are addicted to alcohol who throw this kind of money at booze over a couple months. so if someone is spending more money on a bike that is going to make them ride more and also enjoy the sport, give great mental therapy and also a boost in physical health I think it is something that is not crazy at the end of the day

OK let’s see what the issues are one there hasn’t been a huge change to bicycles in the last 10 years or so I would say if you have a 2015 mountain bike that was progressive back then you probably still don’t need to change it to this day. Then you have rode bikes they’ve been trying to shove the idea of everyone needs disc brakes now and if you need a new route road bike like why not but if you have a 2010 bike, maybe you buy wheels you’re fine. The people who buy the top tier bikes they buy them every year. They just don’t care you know what I mean it’s fu money. But the people use this stuff every day it’s hard to validate what’s been coming out for mid to your bikes now that they’re costing more than a top to your bike to 10 years ago
