Ubisoft's Positive Shift Could be Good News for The Division

We have been speaking a lot recently about The Division and its servers. There has been increased concern and rumors around the potential closure of the servers for The Division. If this were to happen then it would mean the end of the game as the game relies on its servers to play the game.
In recent times Ubisoft did also close servers on an old game and it sparked even more controversy, however it does seem that times of closing down servers and destroying games could be coming to an end!

government actions is needed for companies to be banned from shutting down servers without making the offline modes, games that people have spent their hard earned money on

please tell me you are not serious. first of all, servers are expensive, really expensive. moreover, you can't just port everything to an offline mode. it will not work. it's very difficult to deal with that. so doing that is bad. WHAT HARD EARNED MONEY? 30, 50, 100 bucks in 6-8 years. if you spent more, than that, it sounds like a "you" problem. use your brain, holy. i should sue you for being this stupid.

Ubisoft is on the brink of bankruptcy. Definately bad news for The Division. A game developed as a live-service game from the very start would have to be rewritten in order to create an offline mode.

if it was not specified on game page "rented for = x period of time" closing a game that was bought should be illegal and get in legal actions against that company ! Division 1 should be made in standalone offline coop game/ with local host type of connection, i sure they will sell again few copies making money and also making a lot of players happy !

As sad as it would be if Ubisoft shut down the Div 1 server, it will never be as tragic when Konami shut down the Metal Gear Online servers back in 2012. That shit was devastating and depressing. 😢😢😢

The Crew one was the best Crew i enjoyed. As someone that played the Alpha/Beta to The Crew 2 and Motorfest just felt like a joke comparing them to the first game

that is why i never spent anything in this games 😅 i got the game for 3$ some years ago and the DLC on another discount, but never anything with in the game, as i know that this is online only game and that some day the servers will go off by ubi themselves or when WW3 happen... 😥

The problem with The Division games is that they're built with backend servers in mind. The game's design splits resources, with servers doing some of the heavy lifting and calculations. When The Division 1 (and possibly even 2) was released on older systems that most players had and couldn’t handle the game solely on local hardware, Ubisoft developed tech to offload a significant portion of the CPU's calculations to the servers. For Ubisoft to add a full offline or peer-to-peer (P2P) mode to The Division 1 - 2 would require a massive overhaul, even though modern systems could likely run the game locally. It would involve extensive changes to the current build, which I don’t believe Ubisoft would ever undertake. They tend to take the path of least resistance, and implementing this would almost require rebuilding the game from the ground up-a task that neither Ubisoft nor most AAA companies are likely to do 😑

By far the biggest computational workload for a game is the graphics. The server is likely doing much less than that, especially considering that it's only hosting a couple of players per lobby (up to 24, I believe). This kind of server software could trivially run on consumer hardware, and we've had the ability to do that for decades, with games that have much bigger lobbies than that. They would not have to rebuild anything, just release the dedicated server software that they are already running on their end.

@@jwueller local host coop, i think this will sell well to a lot of players that enjoy the atmosphere and love to play PvE with their friends, but hate that DZ toxic PvP stuff. Maybe letting to be like and option, like in Souls game, to have the option the be invaded when your in DZ PvE...

The Crew 2 is currently priced at just $1 on Steam as of the time of writing this comment, and I still won’t buy it! They removed access to my copy of The Crew (1), and until they add an offline mode to The Crew 2, I don’t care if it’s only a dollar-I’m not buying it.

Maybe they should shut down the Xdefiant servers and leave The Division on. Does anyone still play that? Also, I'd actually play Survival even in an offline mode without other players

Adding offline mode to a few games is nowhere near enough. Something must change drastically to prevent *any* publisher from doing what Ubisoft did. If their stocks go back up they'll pull this card on us once more, maybe not tomorrow but at some point in the near future. We should push now harder than ever. Also the campaign got a lot of backers when Asmongold and other bigger creators saw they could rake in a lot of views when the topic was still fresh. Now it's lake placid - maybe 500 people per day sign up which if we do the math isn't all that great. Sorry for being pessimistic but at this rate the "Stop Killing Games" petition is headed towards failure which in turn means - 3 companies letting us - the gamers rent their IPs for a month or so.

@@attilarza they don't actually- legally the TOS you agree to when you pay for any video game is essentially that you don't own the game, but a license to play the game that the developer can revoke at any time for any reason. Over the years, developers have repeatedly shut down servers late in a game's life cycle and they have *never* refunded players after doing so.

I still see a chance of the Division being shutdown possibly in a few years, I will not trust a thing from Ubi even if the dev says it I’m still ready especially sense The Crew shut down after 10 years we only currently have two years for The Division at least from how I expect things to go even with the global events gone.
