Actually Pandas are a species of bear. You're probably thinking of Red Pandas which are completely unrelated to Giant Pandas and the other seven bears species.

PhD zoologist here, nice presentation and a relaxing voice! One minor thing; - 4:33 it may mislead people by stating the node split points represent a common ancestor splitting into 2 different species _whilst showing that tree_ - not that I'm disputing that fact, rather that one might infer from that tree that the species shown are the 2 that arise from the split! In other words, a sentence of clarification was needed to dispel such interpretation

hi i have a few questions, first of all how can two things be the same species but different genuses? also how can u tell if two things are more closely related, like what indicates a closer relationship, being the same species or genus?
@michaelanderson77152 жыл бұрын
PhD zoologist here. 1. - 'same species, different genera' was a reference to the specific epithet (though his wording was wonky), the second part of a species name. It is this part that may be used in the names of separate species, thus causing confusion as to what organism is being talked about - example; Tilia americana, Fraxinus americana and Ulmus americana. All are species names sharing the same specific epithet; americana. If the species name only comprised one part (americana in this case) then there would confusion as to what was being talked about. Adding the genus as a compulsory first name resolves this issue. By the way, these are the species names for the basswood, ash and elm trees. 2. - 'also how can u tell if two things are more closely related, like what indicates a closer relationship, being the same species or genus?' - you don't know it, but this is actually a complex question! - if I answer within Linnaean taxonomy _only_ it's this; the more commonality at each rank (kingdom down to species) the more related the 2 organisms are. - for example take 2 mammals and a bird (a reptile), all 3 share the same... Kingdom; Animalia Phylum; Chordata ---- but... Class; Mammalia for the 2 mammals/Aves for the bird - at class level the bird diverges into its own class name. You recognise this as confirming that as the other 2 of the 3 still have the same class name, that means they are more related to each other than to the bird. - now, taking this info, answer for yourself what you asked; 3 animals share the same genus, 2 of the 3 share the same species. Which of the 3 are therefore more closely related?
