The polystyrene cup serves to insulate the reaction mixture, and slows heat losses from the side and bottom. Heat is still lost from the surface of the liquid mixture, of course, and that can be reduced by using a polystyrene lid with a hole for a thermometer. Polystyrene is an insulating material, which means that it does not conduct heat very well. This means that it can prevent the heat released by the neutralization reaction from leaving the cup. On the other hand, glass is not quite as good of an insulator as polystyrene.

An excellent and detailed answer! Well done. Just keep in mind, if it’s a two marker, don’t write too much on it :) Good luck tomorrow 🍀

Polystyrene is a better insulator than a glass beaker. Therefore, there is less heat loss to the surroundings.

Polystyrene is a good insulating material, therefore it is used to reduce loss of heat to the surroundings, which, of course, is unwanted and inefficient, as most heat needs to be kept within the system.

My Answer to the first question : We use a polystyrene cup because polystyrene is a great thermal insulator and it will reduce heat loss, which is also why we put a lid on it too. Also we can put the polyester cup inside a beaker to keep it stable and to stop the cup from falling over :D

polystyrene is a good thermal insulator so will reduce the heat loss in the experiment.

Polystyrene is a good insulator and because we are measuring temperature changes we want to minimise heat losses as much as possible

Polyester cup because it is a good insulator and keeps on all the heat in . So there is minimal/no heat loss .

Chemistry is less about revision than other subjects. It tests understanding of concepts and calculations.

@@ridelollol1325 pay attention in class i guess? idrk I've always just absorbed information and never revised. to be fair my teacher bombards my triple class with past paper questions and targets me when I get 1 mark wrong so i kinda learn from that. but nothing done at home apart from marking the aforementioned questions as homework. for other subjects i need reminding of older topics which is usually done in class but relatively no revision for me across all 10 of my subjects.

@@wrth wow that’s impressive! T_T even when i’m in chemistry no one in my class absorbs it and the teacher has to explain it multiple times since she doesn’t explain it well.. i have to teach it to myself at home :/

@@howlscones2476 is it really? i know I enjoy sciences but even my cousin a year older was the same as me. must be genetic 😂 (I'm asian). in all honesty i did self teach some subtopics during lesson time as I sat at the back of the class with my CGP revision guide and the teacher knew I'm a grade 9 student so they just leave me be as long as I'm productive
