GCSE Maths Paper 3H June 2023 Review - Edexcel

The review of Edexcel Paper 3H for GCSE Maths sat on Wednesday, 14th June 2023.
We will be looking at the difficulty of the paper and what the grade boundaries for this year might look like.

Thank you for the video! That's really strange because my friends and I (we're quite good students), we found paper 3 as the most "difficult" paper but we found paper 1 and 2 quite great. Paper 1 was the most easy for me, paper 2 was easy but paper 3 was not good, nor bad... Is someone feeling the same way as us? 😅

Sir when you say your students found it easy, can you clarify if these are students who conventionally aim for a pass or those who want to get 7s-9s that are finding it easy?

It was actually a mixture of students. Top set students as well to low higher set students. Obviously, the lower set students answered according to 'their' target grades, but they felt there was enough for them to do that.

Sir I think I got around 150 would this be a grade 7 at least, since the highest it’s been for a 7 was 139 in 2018? Isn’t it impossible for it to be greater than 140-145 for a grade 7? Ik the papers were easy but exams really aren’t my cup of tea - I manage to absolutely flop questions that I would have otherwise answered flawlessly in class.

you'll need 62 marks roughly in each paper so you need a total 186 out of 240

out of all the maths papers I definitely found paper 1 the easiest and paper 2 the hardest I ran out of time for the final question on paper 3 today but can't do anything about it now but the paper was decent and hopefully I get my 8 in this 😭

Dont worry that is a grade 4 you need 52 marks out of 240 for grade 4 roughly so in each paper you needed 17 marks

Sir what are your expected grade boundaries, because how much can the grade boundaries change over one year, I thought they were just trying to get it to the 2019 ones where they were just below 200, which is what my teacher expected it to be, but how much higher could it get this year. I fell like I lost 25-30 marks worst case scenario over all 3 papers using the unofficial markschemes, would u predict that a 9?

for grade 9 you needed 66 marks in each paper roughly and a total of 198 out of 240 across the 3 papers

I feel like i got 179/240 and I need an 8 for next year, paper 3 was similar to 2 for me, paper 1 was my lowest i think 57. I dont think its looking too good. Im just praying that i got some method marks on the tangent question and the last question on paper 2

Thanks for all the support. However me ( and other grade 8/9 people in my class) thought that paper was the most difficult out of the three. Paper 1 and 2 were easier in my opinion ,but this paper 3 was harder I thought. Hopefully though Insha'Allah I can get an 8 or 9.

Apart from the Vector question involving a and b, i think i got all other marks. the proofs questions were very hard and unusual, really strange questions never seen before but still got them luckily

@@hashimabbas6731 for the triangular numbers, every time you see N you need to add one to it in a bracket (N + 1) to form a new equasion, and times it with the origional. the other proof question used the one marker question before it - you needed to get (2^20 + 1) and (2^20 -1) which are two consecutive odd numbers!!

@@AZ_DBL I'm an experienced maths teacher. The most it's ever been for a 9 is 201 so you're guaranteed to get a 9. 67 average will be a g9. Also, yes papers were easy but there was a lot of g9 but very little g8 so think g9 boundary will be normal, but high for g7 and 8

I have to agre some were quite awkard, the vector one I knew it was equating coefficients, but using a column vector? Just didn’t make sense - can’t believe I lost msrks on it and all u had to do is make simaltaneous equations

The question is a little deeper than that. Grade 6 students will usually need to fix up some areas of Number and Algebra topics from GCSE content because it is heavily relied upon for A Level Maths and taken for granted. Provided they are prepared to put in that hard work over the summer, yes. Otherwise, they will struggle. In my experience, I have also seen grade 6 students put in the hard work in sixth form and get good grades at A-Level. The best I've seen was a student who got a grade B.

I never understand why so many teachers are pleased when their students tell them the paper was easy. It would only be a positive if a student finds a paper easy when the majority found it hard.

Personally, I just like to see my students happy. Seeing them feel an immediate boost that they can carry around for a couple of months, at least, before the results day. Yes, I agree. Boundaries increase, and I mentioned that in this video, too.

@@MathsCoach But they are happy because they don't know how grade boundaries work. I think it's more important to teach students how their grades are awarded so that they are not falsely happy when they find a paper easy or falsely sad/stressed when they find a paper hard. Teach them to try their best on every paper and the system will make sure that they get the grade they deserve, however hard the paper was.

Paper 3 was probably the best paper out of the 3 maths papers for me personally but I may have made some silly mistakes throughout all 3 papers e.g. paper 1 i got the values of the inequality on the last question the wrong way around, paper 2 i did a negative reciprocal on one of the earlier questions for some reason and last question on paper 3 I didn’t realise y was just simply 3x. Did the hard part of it but somehow didnt realise the obvious bit of info. Overall I think I did alright on this paper. Hopefully that grade 8 will be mine Insha’Allah.

😂😂😂😂. I was so lost on that question until when it was like 5 minutes left. I had answered it using the whole page - rubbed off everything and asked for another sheet and I ended up doing it perfectly when I figured out that y = 3x

Beautiful paper i must mention, however this may show that the grade boundaries will increase significantly. Despite this, i must mention allhamdulliah it is now over and i tell everyone that they should not dwell on it as they no longer have control of it, what has been done, has been done. The last Question WAS AMAZINGGGGGG I LOVVED IT. I hope everyone achieves the results they deserve
