I think 1 atmosphere means the pressure exerted on earth's surface by 1 atmosphere and you can find it by: Since at sea level where the atmospheric pressure is 1 atmosphere , a tube that is enclosed on one side and immersed in a tub full of mercury would have the mercury rise up to a hight of 76 centimetres, because thats what the atmospheric pressure can support. So from the formula of getting pressure in liquids: density x height X gravity We can approximate the pressure of the mercury column to be 13600 kg/m³(mercury's density) x 0.76 metres x 10N/Kg we get 103,360N/m². That is the pressure that the mercury column exerts and the atmospheric pressure that balances the column. I hope this helped
