Can you please make the practice questions and past papers on your website a lot harder, or provide harder alternatives because I find your videos packed with dense information (explained in easy and interesting ways in a short amount of time) that I find really helpful in difficult exams but the practice questions and past papers are relatively easy and I don't find them challenging. 0:23 "We also saw that temperature is just a measure of the average internal energy of all the particles..." misconception: it should be "average kinetic energy" Internal energy is a property of bulk materials, not particles, and is defined as the sum of the total potential energy of all the particles plus the total kinetic energy of all the particles.

quick question, if the average kinetic energy of the particles increases does the internal energy still increase whilst the potential energy remains constant?

@parnaviyadgire51493 жыл бұрын
Not to be rude or anything,but you're creating an unnecessary issue here. Internal energy is the total energy stored by the particles of a substance. There are two types of internal energy, potential and kinetic energy stores. I agree with you, temperature is the measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles,but kinetic energy is the same as internal energy. Please correct me if I am wrong.

@@parnaviyadgire5149 nah your wrong i legit put that 'temperature is a measure of the average internal energy of all the particles in a substance' in one exam and it sold me marks temperature is a measure of the average KINETIC energy of the particles and kinetic energy is NOT the same as internal energy, kinetic energy is kinetic energy, but internal energy is the sum of the kinetic and potential energy of all the particles in a substance

1:17 "Rather than increasing the particles' internal energy" - sorry, this is wrong. The internal energy IS increasing during a change of state because although the total potential energy of the particles is increasing, even though their total kinetic energy is not increasing. Internal energy = the sum of (total PE of the particles) and (total KE of the particles)

Hi, Thanks so much for your resources - I was using this in class today and noticed you define temperature as a measure of the average internal energy of the particles. Unless I am confused, I believe the temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a system - not including the potential energy. Without this distinction, it's difficult to explain how energy is conserved during the process (i.e. the energy is transferred to potential energy in the particles, instead of kinetic energy?). Interested to hear your thoughts and justification either way! :) Thanks again!
@pieterhuman80492 жыл бұрын
I am a teacher and must say upfront that I absolutely love cognito's content. I had the same issue with this particular video though. In my understanding energy transferred to a substance that results in a rise in temperature, is due to the increase in the average kinetic energy of the particles in that substance. During phase changes, the energy transferred to the substance leads to an increase in potential energy as this energy is "used" to weaken or break the bonds between particles, and does not increase the average kinetic energy ie. temperature, of the substance.

Hello, so if we want to know the energy required to change ice to gaz we have to use as L : 2 220 000 + 334 000 ? Thanks for the videos by the way, they are very well explained and well made ! You deserve much more views
@teacherconor90373 жыл бұрын
yes, if you are doing the change on 1Kg of ice, because those figures you quoted are the *specific values, i.e. they refer to one kilogram of the substance
@kavee349511 ай бұрын
I guess no actually. Since SLH means the energy needed to change the state when the substance does NOT change the temp. So suppose the ice is -10 degrees celsius, then first we hv to add the energy to make it 0 degrees and THEN we need to SLH of fusion then add the temp needed to make it 100 degrees and lastly add the SLH of vaporization. And yes we hv to multiply the SLH by the mass bcz these are the values for 1kg I suck at explaining but hope this helps :)
