GCSE mathematic revision help, golden rules when enlarging by a positive or negative scale factor. Two examples of how to enlarge a shape by a positive and negative scale factor for GCSE revision.
The first example is how to enlarge by a scale factor of 2
The second example is how to enlarge by a negative scale factor of -2
A scale factor of 2 and -2 is chosen. This is one of the key GCSE transformations and will help secure a grade 4 and above in your GCSE examination View my channel: / jayates79

Yes, you can enlarge by -1. From the centre of enlargement,: coordinate A would go left one down 1 coordinate B would go left one down 3 coordinate C would go left 5 down 3

The same method is used - just mark the coordinate (2,2) for example as the origin and go through the same process looking how to get from (2,2) to each of the corners of the shapes and then applying the scale factor as appropriate.

Luke: Isn't it amazing. Jim: What? Luke: The enlarged triangles are similar to the small triangle. Jim: Oh yes. And corresponding sides are parallel. Luke: And the two enlarged triangles are congruent. Jim: I wonder why these things are true? Luke: Those are mathematical questions, Jim. Jim: Sorry, Luke, I forgot we were just revising procedures.

Mrs1234ist: look I had the same question it's not confusing look here how it's done if the coordinates of A is (8,4) this means across eight up four so what u do is if the scale factor is 1/2 u just take the half of each number so if u have (8,4) u take the half of each it will be like this (4,2) hope this helps you

When doing enlargement i have heard that you need to add the lines as well? but this one doesn't have the lines and i think that in a test thats what you get the marks for too.. the lines ? So do the Lines HAVE to be there?
