GCWS What's in my pack: Sharps and things for the steep and deep

In this episode of Gear Check With Sage, I chat about the sharp items I carry for walking on hard snow, or when its steep and deep.
We have a lot of firm snow, and using ice axe and crampons wasn't something I used much until the last few seasons. I'm no Ski mountaineer but I do love walking up and hiking lines and the assurance that the sharps gives is quite nice.

In addition to the sharps one of the best tools I use for soft deep snow hiking is the Billy Goat Tech plates.

Can I ask about the plates. I'm wondering if they work as well as snow shoes? Do they post hole? Or do you stay completely on top? The look awesome

Hey Phoebe, They add a ton of float but your still sinking in a little. They are intended for use when your going up a steep ascent, in soft snow, like boot packing up a chute. The plate eliminates the post hole wallowing that happens if your just trying to boot or crampon up. if you used them in flatter terrain they would provide some flotation but are more made for climbing rather than walking.
