I love mares! You're right that you have to prove yourself to a mare. I see this behavior over and over again as they interact with the stallion.

Love mares. They’re the most honest with you when they don’t like something and always communicate. Makes it so much easier to keep them happy and healthy when they can tell you right away that there’s a problem ❤

@ We do body work on our horses and the mares tell it to us straight when something hurts. However when I work on my sisters gelding he just stands there blankly not saying anything. “Like, buddy, does this area hurt? Is what I’m doing helping? Give me something lol”

Very informative video on mare psychology. 👍I’ve heard people bash mares, and in every case their horsemanship wasn’t very good in general. My paint mare is amazing! You can’t force her to do anything, but she trusts me and with patience and some time, she has gained confidence in areas that seemed impossible.

Last year i aquired a 10yr old mare that was an older gentleman pet. I've had mares before but not like her. She was gentle and smart, but very alpha plus she was spoiled and she never really had to work. Daamn we've had a tough go of it. Multiple times i almost gave up on her and hauled her to the nearest horse sale. I'm glad i didn't. She's really turned into something special. She still tests me once in a awhile just to make sure I'm paying attention but I'm convinced she'd ride though fire if i asked her too.

Thanks for sharing. I am so glad she worked out for you. Some of the toughest ones end up the greatest with time and patience.

I have had fantastic mares. My best ACTHA horse was a triple threat, Peruvian Paso, chestnut, MARE! She always made the right decisions on tough trails and kept us both safe for many years. I have had many nice mares. I don't choose horses by sex or color. All of that is immaterial to me. Smooth, safe, sensible, the rest doesn't matter.

I have three perfect mares. I would not trade them for anything. High horse, me and the rest of my little herd get along great.

The people I know who don't like mares don't like them because someone they know spoke negatively about mares... " my dad used to say blah, blah, blah." It has been my experience that much like the canine world, females think things through a little better and don't just follow for the sake of following. Stated differently... They are smarter or as smart as those of us trying to handle them.
