How long do the knobs normally last when replaced? This is a somewhat common problem with many ge timers. I just disassembled one and oiled it then put a used knob on it with the metal piece in it. The timer turns now but still seems a little stiff. I am not sure if the motors get stiff or if the hams get in a bind from wear.

I cannot thank you enough for sharing this! A repair guy told me I needed a new timer so we put one in. He said the new timer must be bad so while waiting for the 2nd new timer to arrive, I found this video and the knob was indeed the problem. All solved for a fraction of the cost. Thank you again!!!

Thanks for taking the time to post this. I had this exact problem, and your video helped me determine/verify the cause. I went to my local appliance store and when I mentioned the model number, the lady smiled an brought out a whole bag of replacement knobs and said that it was a common problem. She also mentioned that the knob has been re-engineered to be more sturdy. The replacement I got has a metal collar surrounding the plastic, so I think this one will be more resistant to splits. Thanks again!!!!!

I'm only a little salty that i found your video after i had my whole machine ripped apart, but you did help me find the issue

You can stuff the little compartments around the shaft opening with JB Weld. This potting material will reinforce the structure. It's an effective repair that's better than new, but requires patience filling the little compartments. I used toothpicks and an exact o knife. Perhaps a syringe would do better for filling the compartments but them you have to load the JB Weld into the syringe first.

Usually replacing the knob is a temporary fix. These timers are notorious for getting too stiff and breaking knobs. You can reinforce the knobs if you use the two part super glue with the powder catalyst. I just fill in the holes around the d shape which makes the knob much stronger.

When I took off my knob, two little metal clip things fell out. If I buy a new knob will it have the intact metal clip or is that from the stem that the knob slides in to?

Had same issues here, had some initial troubles removing the knob so I gently rotated it until I heard the clicks tried to remove then rotated a little counter clockwise and it easily came off. The knob was cracked on the inside and ordered the part. Hopefully it will fix it.

Just an FYI for future use. Vice grips or pliers work fine in a pinch. My GE knob is broken but I'm still using pliers to turn the dryer on.

OMG, the inside of ours had the hairline like this one. I have the model # & serial # etc. Being a prime member on Amazon it's there next day service but first, we will go to Rona where we bought it was a special buy just after covid was lifted. I'll keep you informed

Hello I have the identical dryer that your showing with the broken timer knob. Can you please help. I'm on a fixed income. My dryers belt broke so I ordered a new one and replaced it. Then the it still would not start up. So I saw a video and replaced the door switch. Also I cleaned it inside and replaced the exhaust vent also. When the machine is in it is whisper quiet. I also replaced the drum bearing slides. The switch was aftermarket. It wouldn't stay together. So I used some hot glue on the outside of plastic and it held fine. But the dryer timer will not advance and shut down. It just keeps heating on any setting. What could I have done wrong or what is the most probable cause for this. Thank you David

My new dryer just got delivered less than an hour ago and this is what I noticed. I set it up and tried to use the new dryer and it spun around without turning from mode to mode. After looking at the knobs under side, it has cracks all over. I am thinking about returning the entire product. If GE makes knobs this fragile, what else is badly made or designed?

These suckers are tanks. The only thing I replace on them are knobs and plastic slides(they make a squeal when they wear out) that wear out after 5 plus years of use and an occasional belt. When I first started I thought these needed a timer before I discovered the broken knob. Never have I ever replaced an element on these or an idler pulley.

i tried turning the shaft with some pliers and it's really hard to do with moderate force. should i go full strength, or is there some other possible reason for the resistance

They are tough to turn. If you end up breaking it you may have needed a timer anyways. Try to use it and see if just using plyers work for you.

I found that the timer on these GE timers is ridiculously hard to turn. My parents dial was broken and I bought a new timer and it is just as hard to turn. Complete junk. Before you buy a dryer make sure the timer is easy to turn. I took the timer apart and it has terrible plastic toy gears ....absolutely pathetic. Now way to make them turn easier.
