My dad remembers seeing the old GEs as a kid (U30s, U33s, and so on) and he called the "lug-lugs" because of their distinctive exhaust note. At the time he didn't know what they were other than they sounded vastly different than the first gen EMD units he saw more frequently.

The early uboats did, but all the half notches did was speed the engine up while keeping the previous notch's power. Rebuilds eliminated half-notches.
