GE Washer Troubleshooting - How to Find Error Codes, and Reset a GE Washer

GE Washing Machines have a pretty fantastic hidden diagnostic mode that will help you troubleshoot a huge range of issues like dealing with a GE Washer not spinning. In today's video, I want to show how easy it is to figure out how to get a GE washing machine into diagnostics. Doing this can make GE washing machine repair much easier than guessing on what's going on, as you can initiate parts tests directly from the controls without opening anything up.
This diagnostic system is exclusively for the GE washer top load machines, and wouldn't working a GE frontload washing machine.

Oh my goodness. This is THE BEST! We thought the problem was a faulty lid lock, but so many people posted comments on other sites saying they'd changed their lid lock mechanisms without resolution. Four of the six codes I got related to the lid lock, so we feel good about proceeding on our original hypothesis after capturing the codes and running the tests (and the lid lock and spin tests were the only tests that failed). Additionally, this video saved me an hour or more of scooping out standing water from the drum because I ran the test of the drain pump, which bypassed the lid lock interference and emptied the washer. Thanks for taking the time to post such a comprehensive video.

Did this code test several times, making sure I did it right. Each time, I got every every possible combinations of codes, but I know that most of those codes list things that are not broken. Not very helpful to me.

​@@marybrooks1314I'm not positive but I think it's as simple as unplugging for a minute or two then plugging back in. It might help to clear any codes first (check them if you haven't already!). To clear fault codes: 1) while holding down the start button, turn main dial 7 clicks CCW. Release the start button. 2) all the lights should be lit, indicating you are in diagnostics mode. 3) turn the dial about 15 times to the right, or several to the left, until just the 'fill' light is lit, the second light in the string of 6. 4) press start once. You have cleared the codes. To exit diagnostics mode, hold the start button for 3 seconds. 5) now do the reset - unplug for a min and plug back in.

Thank you for posting his video. I was able to figure out why my washer wouldn't start, and it was as simple as the lid lock spring was a little off and not letting the sensor be pressed to let the washer know the lib was closed. Love when it's simple little fixes for something that could be expensive!

Thanks a million.! Started the machine and had a well pump failure. After I got the well pump going, the wash machine had spasm and seizures. After running code check, manual filling and draining then resetting codes...life was wonderful again.

I had been waiting to do this one for awhile. No one else that I knew of did this kind of system test on KZbin, so when I realized that, I kept the machine 'til I had time to show everyone the tests this type of machine has. Whirlpool's machines are extremely well-documented, but not so much with GE, despite the fact the GE system has all the same features, if not better ones, but no techs really took the time to "Show off" what they could do.

@@garykane978 The only one I found that will actually fill with water is the lower end non HE no Energy Star washer. The high efficiency means it is saving water and energy, sadly no water = dirty clothes, no hot water = dirty clothes. Remember when the service tech shows up, they didn't design it, build it or sell it, have mercy on them.

By far the best GE washer help video on YT! I was able to quickly, easily & more important CHEAPLY diagnose & repair a faulty lid lock on my mom’s 5+ year old GE top loader. Thank you for this video! As a consumer, I was able to figure out the fault codes on our washer... ran a couple of the tests (found the tech sheet from another video which was easier than trying to pause the video), figured out the issue was just an unbalanced load, cleared the fault codes and bam! fixed washer without having to call in the troops.

I learned way more than I ever wanted to about a washer by watching this video, but I think it helped me figure out the problem and resolve it. (The load was out of balance...I did a few things on my own, causing 8 more errors...understanding the errors, making sure they were no longer an issue, and then clearing the codes - diagnostic #16, I think did the trick.)

I fixed my washer! 8 days ago I followed the instructions in this video. I found 7 error codes. I knew I needed a new lid lock switch from the diagnostic. Original problem was my awasher would only allow for wash selection & start would chime as normal but that's where it ended (no movement,water, or locking). After receiving my ordered lid lock today, I replaced the damaged lid lock from watching a different video. When I first plugged in the washer after the lid lock install, the washer was still not starting. I followed the instructions on how to enter the test mode & went through all test. Some of the test would not run because it was censing the lid lock error still, BUT when I was done I exited back to normal wash selection mode & Waallaa! It worked! I don't really know why or how but gosh darn it, I have some laundry to do with 5 people & NO WASHER FOR TWO WEEKS! 😱 Maybe I shouldn't have fixed it... Lol! Thank You Ben!

I'm going to try the first test, but having seen this, it confirms what I've found with other machines that have a digital diagnostic readout, i.e. this is the 4th machine I've come across that has a digital diagnostic readout that I've had to repair. I have had both GE and Whirlpool top loaders without the digital display, and never had these problems. When I need a new top loader, it will be one with no digital read out, just a simple GE or Hotpoint basic toploader.
