What I love about Gear 5 is that, what seems to be a gag and comedic, like eyes popping out and stars.. all of that is actually happening. Luffy is literally changing reality as he fights. Even Kaido cannot comprehend what's actually happening.

@@shubhamyuvaidya89 I genuinely believe it was. In an old interview, Oda said he challenged himself to create a manga with a main character who had the most ridiculous power he could think of. That's the same wording we get when the true nature of the Nika fruit is revealed... At very least, I think it's been planned since Skypiea, when the Sun God of Shandia was mentioned and we got the Luffy silhouette that mirrors our first look at Nika.

@@shubhamyuvaidya89 I honestly believe the whole manga was drawn to reach this point. His first thought probably was "I want a main character that can replicate the cartoons I loved as a kind", but he had to find a way to tame him at the start, so he probably reversed engeniered this. I think the gum-gum fruit was a way he found to give Luffy the fruit he wanted from the start without it being OP in the early stages of the story, instead of thinking about the gum-gum fruit and then thinking looney tooneys was it's natural progression.

Obviously they leaned heavily into the silly and goofy aspects of the power, but they manage to grab the godlike aspects of it too. Like the way the heartbeat came back and we saw the lighting and the clap into the ground rippling or that “this is fun, isn’t it, Kaido?!”

I guess now we know that when it comes to Devil Fruit Zoan Mythicals, the abilities of the users act somewhat like a mixed Dual-Fruit Type Power-user. Like for example with Marco & Yamato, their Zoan Mythicals make them a dual-mix of Zoan-transformer & Logia elemental; like with Marco's Fire Phoenix and Yamato's Ice Wolf-God. And I guess for Luffy's Zoan Mythical it makes him a dual-mix Zoan-transformer & Paramecia-superhuman of rubber

I don't think it works that way. Mythical zoans don't care in what category their powers fall into. All they do is give the users all the abilities and attributes which are associated with their particular myths. Whatever category then those powers go into, it does not matter.

Yamato and marco both only have characteristics of paramythia and zoan not logia, they can only use healing fire and ice, unlike logias who literally are their respective elements and therefore intangible. Marco and yamato can't turn intangible, also marcos fire can only heal not damage

When I first saw Gear 3, my very first thought was "that's not how it works". Even if you can blow air into your fist to make it bigger, you won't increase it's mass, and the force you can generate is the same, only spread across a wider sufrace. Then, when I first saw gear 5 and realized what the power actually was, I went "now it makes perfect sense". Because blowing your fist up like a balloon and being able to hit harder with it because of that is EXACTLY what Luffy's power is. He thinks this is how it works, so that's how it works. You make your fist bigger, so you hit harder.

This was a fantastic episode! It was even better than the previous. It’s because we got to see Gear 5 in full force. And it once again it was because this added motion and sound and color to what we already saw in the manga. GUM-GUM GIGANT was perfect!!!! Seeing Luffy with just the eyes on the black screen. Luffy jumping out of Kaido’s mouth makes so much more sense than him coming out of Kaido’s eyes. I loved the Woody Woodpecker like laugh Luffy did when he also did the tire like spinning with his legs right after the blast breath. I always got the sense that Luffy was actually jumping up and down when using Gum-Gum Jump Rope. I loved that when he got tired, he didn’t just deflate but turned gray and desaturated. And that when he powered back up again, he “chose the correct beat!” And the gorgeous colors!!! And then "Over the Top" starts to play! Everyone’s reaction to Luffy coming through the roof was hilarious. I almost wanted to see Marco’s eyes pop out too. I’m glad they kept in Yamato’s line about Luffy being white even though that was clearly meant to tell manga readers what Luffy’s coloring is. But they tweaked the line so it sounds less like she’s telling us and more like she’s wondering it to herself or Momo. And it’s always fun to see Luffy try to think. And I liked that they added in the first 2 pages of 1046 with Zunesha celebrating Joyboy returning but also affirming that this is still Luffy and not him being possessed by Joyboy like what happens in a bunch of other Shounen manga.

Im glad everyone watching this is happy, laughing and at awe in this episode. Tohei did a tremendous job in this anime and animations, Oda outta be proud at em and his works coming to life. Edit: this is just his awakening and luffy is testing the waters, and later spoilers Luffys rematch, i bet he has improved in his g5 ability. You imagine how much stronger he would be soon against BB, the admirals, gorosei, and probably the endgame antag, Emu whose powers are possibly are possibly op.

As somebody who came to One Piece from a much more seriously drawn manga Bleach…the idea that One Piece fans can even have the gall to say that Gear 5 is “too ridiculous” when Luffy powers up by inflating his arms like popeye, eats 10 tons of food in one sitting, one of the crew members is a talking reindeer and a talking skeleton who jokes about women’s panties. From my perspective this shit has been ridiculous from the start.

There's something you have to understand about Gear 5: It's not an stylistic choice to have other character have cartoony reactions (like the jumpy eyes on everybody downstairs), IT'S ACTUALLY HAPPENING. Just re-watch the scene of luffy getting out of Kaido's body by grabbing his nose THROUGH HIS DAMN EYES to pull himself... That has nothing to do with rubber, he should be blind but he isn't, you will see more of this reality warping near the end of the fight. The power of a Nika, God of the Sun is literally warping reality to match what Luffy thinks it's funny.

One of the things that makes Gear 5 so powerful is that literally no one in that world has a reference for what Luffy is doing, save maybe Zenusha and anyone else that's been around that long. Kaido came close when he compared it to a comic strip, but the world of One Piece, from what we've seen, doesn't have animated cartoons. We fans and viewers have seen older cartoons, or at least clips of them; we have some idea of what to expect. But for everyone in the One Piece world, this is something completely different.

He can't. Gear5 is not some reality altering ability. The rubber body just becomes free, meaning luffy's BODY can do everything he can imagine, and since it's awakening, that freedom extends to his surroundings, including people. Too many people don't know what a hyperbole is and take the gorosei too seriously when they talked about gear5, even though in the same exact chapter/episode they explicitly explain that the awakening just gives more strength and freedom to the rubber body.

I personally think if luffy found out his fruit wasn't the gum gum fruit it would be ruined since that would in a way limit his imagination in a way, and the reason as to why I think this is due to luffys nature. His stupidity is what makes the fruit great and the fact that some of his techniques don't even make sense as a rubber man. I personally think it would be for the best if he never found out. but that's just me.

Gear 5 basically gives him cartoon powers and i love it. Like, how in looney tunes or tom n jerry, they just whip out guns or weapons or even spit fire out of nowhere and being intangible, grow a ridiculous amount of muscle or size. Similar to how Luffy just casually grabs a lightning then throw it and change sizes at will.

That's also why gear 2 and gear 3 came into effect. he imagined it and thought that is how it would work. with gear 2 he thought accelerating his blood flow would make him faster and so it did. and with gear 3 he thought because he is rubber he could blow air into him self and expand him self like a balloon.

It's funny how people complain about gear 5 being "too goofy" and "cartoony" as if the entire mechanic for gear 3 wasn't based off one of the most classic rubberhose gags in history, as if Luffy didn't try to fight Enel by turning into a leaf, as if he didn't try to defend against Crocodile by drinking so much water that he turned into a water balloon, with the water comically leaking out of his wounds. If anything i thought this wasn't cartoony enough, i fully expected a complete change in artstyle.

Aite bro powerscaling discussion time: When luffy collapses, and kaido follows, does anyone else feel like that's like more than kaido just being tired? He looked surprised, it reminded me of fujitora. Could that be luffy thinking "Pause, Imma clown on u a bit"? Because, at the same time, him powering down, only happened immediately after kaido said "Bro you must be tired right" and he was like "Oh shit you're right I almost died". His power is limited by his imagination, and I'm pretty certain that his personality is determined because of the limitless feeling he has. I really feel like Luffy is only as strong as he is now, because he doesn't know the truth about his devil fruit. If he knew that his devil fruit was of an imagination god, he's got more power than any logia does. It's likely he can just emulate any power he's experienced, period. Especially powers like katakuri, or bellamy (meh not really a good example of power scaling because bellamy lol) since they're so close. Potentially extremely broken.
