Gear change, 1900TDI Diesel Motorbike Car Engine and Gearbox

A lot of people have asked me about how the gear change mechanism I've used on the 1900cc TDI car diesel engine and car gearbox powered ratbike actually works.

I saw a bike with a reliant box once, the pedal did back and forwards, the sideways was sprung for 3rd and 4th, A handlebar thumb type lever pulled it via a cable over for1st and 2nd, so setting off you pulled the clutch and pushed the thumb lever and lifted the pedal, then for 2nd again pulled the clutch in and pushed the thumb lever and pushed down on the pedal, then just used the the clutch and pedal for 3rd and 4th.

Brilliant, bloody brilliant! Wow I love this. I have an 020 transmission saved to use in my 3rd diesel bike build but this makes it look like an 02J or 02A gearbox will do just as well. Thank you sir. I am still interested in your white "ECU" box to run the electronic fuel injection pump.

It was some half finished project someone put up on the internet about 8 years ago. There's been no movement on it for years and has essentially dead since about the time I put this on the road. It works but there's parts of it I'm not happy about but at 85mpg I'm not complaining.

Love deisel bikes/trikes. Always looking at engine units to see what would work. 3 cyl units especially. Bloke made a fiesta diesel trike and did around 60mpg. tank range 600 miles. Just like the torque of these engines :-)

thats maaad man, love it, but you ever consider putting an auto in it? on alh auto box are almost the same size.

I considered having just the main torque converter unit connected to the drive shaft which would have been a lot lighter but didn't know what was needed to make them work when separated from the main box. They have hydraulic oil flowing in and out of them and some have a lockup clutch inside the impeller unit which was just baffling to work out.

Hello! great motorcycle! I am building for myself a motorcycle with a sidecar for long distance travel. I am planning to install an engine and gearbox from a chevrolet matiz car. can you tell us how the differential works? is it blocked here? from which car is the rear wheel gear used?

Hi, the diff is welded in the same way as a DIY rally car The rear wheel is the space saver wheel from a Ford ST170. Be warned most space saver wheels are not suitable for motorbike tyres.

Cunning!! Ye Olde Quasar used a Reliant gearbox, and I'm pretty sure they used a really complex series of cams to translate the 4 speed h-pattern into a purely linear gear pedal.... I think the 1800 Goldwing got an electric reverse?

They are simply too bulky. CVT would be your best option.

Yes, in Sinsheim last year was a Sidecar Setup with a 2.5 TDI and a 4 Speed Automatic from the C4 Audi A6. Heavy as F***, but not that bad with three wheels. Lookee here on my channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKHTemppos6ga7s

There's been plenty of diesel bikes made using the variable belt CVT? from the Aixam micro car.
