I still use this as my main rig with the pedalboard that has 2 separate pedals,I don't play metal so I don't really need the fat tones for metal,besides its pretty versatile ...its sounds better that a lot of pedalboards I tried from big brands..is just straight to the point.....great review...Keep the great work!

A friend of mine had one of these in college (around 2007). We used to jam with it in his dorm, and for what it was, it sounded pretty dang cool. Neat to reflect back on how forward-thinking they were with these units.

But I haven’t seen any knobs oriented multi effects which are as fun as the bean. The point of it not being pedalboard friendly shaped is that, back in the day, people were looking for more of an all in one solution. In the late 90s - early 2000s guitar players wanted a multieffect unit that you could just plug into, send to the front of house and be done with it. I remember the guy that sold me my Boss GT6 telling me that he could feel "a coming back of pedalboards made of single pedals" but, back then, midi controlling was still a work in progress. Going from an unboosted clean amp with chorus and reverb to a dry, boosted crunch tone wasn't practical, yet. Expecially if you were starting out, something like a POD or a Boss multieffect was what we were looking for.
@andrea48095 жыл бұрын
I feel the exact same way, by the time you find your sound on new stuff the moment has passed, this gets you there now and sounds pretty good as well!

I bought an AX8 today because of your videos! Thank you very much for demystifying the pros and cons of different units. Side note: Didn't go for the Helix Lt due to the built-in expression pedal and preference for the AX8metal tones I've seen from people like you.
@johngiannopoulos49616 жыл бұрын
I had one,bought it in '99.Just to say,there IS a combination function which enables a virtual drive pedal before the amp model.I used it excessively for the Zakk Wylde type emulations I made.I vaguely remember pressing a button and turning the drive mode in the Jcm 800 model.
@PlagueScytheStudios6 жыл бұрын
That functionality on the face of the unit is apparently reserved for the 2.0 and upgraded 1.0s with the EPROM chip. However, you can access the drive boost and distortion modes over MIDI in the editing software (I was just messing with it this morning). It's not enough low cut for me, so I still need an EQ pedal to make it usable, but it's better than nothing.

10 years in homerecording, money spend on many guitar ampsims. Reintroduced myself to POD Farm like two weeks ago. Fuckin amazing lead, clean, effectted tones. It wasn't POD Farm sucking ten years ago, it was me sucking on guitar, going with waaay to much gain, that those devices unfortunately can create. I know a player who sounds better with his Flextone II head that his bandmate with Mesa Dual + Mesa oversized.
@javimm776 жыл бұрын
I bought the original POD, version 2.0, upgraded later to 2.3 via a EPROM chip swap back in the late 90s. I was amazed. So easy to use, effects, sounded great (to my ears at least). A lot of pros recorded albums with it at the time, so it wasn't that bad I guess. I had a great time with it and learned a lot about the differences of tube amps just by reading about and researching the models. I was 20 at the time. Happy days :-)

You can get really similar results by running one of the 1x15 sub IRs in the cab block with your normal cabs on your favorite Recto/FAS model. That's basically what Line 6 did for the Bb.

Awesome stuff!!! I have a Pod Pro Rack and still use it with a combo amp, stereo out to stereo in. The Pod software allows you to add other effects that are not on the face, such as Presence, boost and distortion. Also the you can change the speaker cabs with the power button and the save button called the Amp Tuning Mode (its in the manual). Recently bought The Mooer Radar and a Boss GT-1 and breathed new life into this unit for direct recording. I now turn off the on board cabinet model. I'm using the GT-1 as my recording interface and for my stereo effects. The Ping Pong delay when the time is turned down between 10 and 40 and the feedback is turned down to 0 the effect creates a stereo room effect. Over all I still use the PPR (Treadplate) as an amp head like someone would use a vintage JCM800. Great stuff!!!

Nice video! I have a 2.0 I still use regularly. The trick to get good metal tones in my opinion is to use it purely as a preamp. Boost, tube power amp, real cab. I still use mine often when I’m not in the mood for axe fx. I’m not sure how much adjustment the old 1.0’s have with the ‘amp’ AIR setting, but on my 2.0 it defaults to be used in front of a clean channel. It requires a settings change for ‘power amp input’. It’s called ‘cabinet tuning’ in the manual, and this helps it sound much more like a preamp, and kind of ‘takes the blanket’ off the sound. With default settings it sounds more like a distortion pedal. Using the ‘direct’ mode with the cab disabled is close but a bit more muffled. I believe you can turn off (or change) cabs with the 1.0 if you connect it to your computer (midi to usb interface) and use line 6 edit. Maybe see if you can find a firmware 2.3 eprom, updating the 1.0 to 2.0 software is as easy as open it up, and plug in the new chip. Old school firmware update.
@PlagueScytheStudios6 жыл бұрын
I could not find a 1.0 manual for the life of me, and the EPROM upgrades are over half the cost I paid for the POD alone. Perhaps I'll look into it later for another video.
@PlagueScytheStudios6 жыл бұрын
Update: I got Sound Driver working through my audio interface, so I've screwed around with the "hidden amps" and parameters. Definitely some much better cabinet models, and the presence is nice. The drive boost and distortion suck for what I want them to do, still need an outboard pedal to get rid of the flub. Still, I'll be using this setup for some upcoming content.
@tunasalad9706 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you’ll see this, but I recently picked up a Pod Pro to replace my Pod 2.0 bean, the Pro is on one firmware behind the bean, and I was surprised how much worse it sounds, much more ‘blanketed,’ and murky. I’m tracking down an update eprom now. I would guess the 1.0 is even worse. If you know anyone who can burn EPROMs I found a link to the Pod 2.3 (the final update) eprom file here about half way down the page: dbwbp.com/index.php/9-misc/37-synth-eprom-dumps Might save a few bucks if you want to explore this unit further.
@PlagueScytheStudios6 жыл бұрын
I actually fell into that rabbit hole while making the next video on the POD lol. Unfortunately the EPROM burners I've seen cost more than the third party units someone is selling on eBay, so no luck on the DIY path. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LINE-6-Pod-V-2-3-firmware-OS-Update-EPROM-LATEST-UPGRADE-Guitar-Effect-/273395814261 I would be curious to hear a side by side comparison of the 2.0 vs the Pro on the same settings. If it's that different, perhaps some video content on the 2.3 firmware is warranted and I'll spring for the upgrade. Do let me know if you find something cheaper.

I loved that Single Rectifier boosted by SD-1 tone. oh shit... that's not from the POD, that's an actual amp. why does it sound like high gain amps have a high cut that is so apparent? maybe line 6 realized what makes amps sound "digital" in the first place but could never solve this problem?

I had a line6 vetta2 in the mid 2000’s and I was fond of it. It was great for playing a wide array of everything. It never had the feel of saturated tubes of coarse, but it could be dialed in to do whatever you needed. The big downside was it just took a lot of time to tweak and dial in exactly what you want.

I recently brought my POD2.0 out of semi-retirement. The 2.0 made my beginner days back then a lot more enjoyable, by opening sounds previously inaccessible with my solid state amp, as well as making my first pedals sound passable. That said, I too found a lot of the default sounds and some of the models a bit unusable. With time one learns what each model can and cannot do. The pocketPOD is 2.0-based, with a bunch of extra presets, including a few for bass. The reduced controls are a pain, especially the dead-brain lack of a dedicated volume knob. The build quality is also nothing like its big siblings. The limited physical interface makes use of the PC software a necessity. BTW on the 2.0 you can also tweak some internal parameters not available on the physical interface by using the MIDI connection to the PC software. I don't know if 1.0 had that option yet.
@PlagueScytheStudios6 жыл бұрын
You can on the 1.0 as well using Sound Driver, I was just messing with it yesterday. It's missing the 4 amps exclusive to the 2.0, but it's otherwise the same. I plan to use some presets I've built on an upcoming shootout.

I haven't used anything but Line 6 since (until I found the Ignite VSTs). I've owned the GP, XT Live, X3 Live (which I still use), PocketPOD and the HD500. I will never "poo poo" Line 6. I'm far, far from a tone snob and Line 6 has (almost) never steered me wrong. The HD500 was a huge letdown, due to the DSP limits. The Helix is a total game changer and once I'm not a broke bitch, I will be picking one up.

I went with the Behringer V-Amp 3. It's on the most basic of practice amps and it's really the closest thing that can get your vintage practice amp to being the modelling amp that is just beyond your budget. It's not perfect, neither are the current modelling amps, both are better than the prior generations and neither is going to be a Kemper. But a Kemper is another budget anyway. Most folks could buy several guitars for what a Kemper will MSRP for. For existing set ups, this is a nice addition if a foot pedal/switch is what that amp needs to get to 2019 era amp equipment. The beauty of these type of products is the recording, you don't need to mic a speaker cabinet.

I had the PODxt all the way up to last month until the power switch broke on me and I cannot find a new one. I had it for 14 years and it played well. And yes, knowing how to create tones and not the stored ones they load it with have a lot to do with it. You have to use the internal things in the software to create decent tones. Yes some things sounded like shit, but I found some really nice tones to work with from it and have no complaints. Is tube better? Hell yes, depending on how many thousands you want to spend on a fucking amp head. But when you have a small space to work in and you are not touring, or just want to quickly record an idea you have in seconds? One of these POD's or PODxt's were great for that. I hope one day amps will be as easy to work with as Line 6 is.

I still have one...it served me well for a few years but sounds terrible to 20 years later...times change.

I have had Marshall tube amps in the past and feel the Marshall amp setting to be very realistic. I have never had any Mesa stuff So I can not comment other then I thought they sounded fake. The Marshall JMP Mkii that I owned was marketed as "The worlds loudest and Clean amp ever made". I can attest to that, It needed an attenuator to get a good distortion sound out of it. Otherwise you were knocking the building down.

I have a foot pedal for it. It does help

I dug out my old POD 2.0 recently and tried to use it in my home studio for a certain song and couldn't get a sound good out of it. I went back to using my Avid Eleven rack. Even my Fender G-DEC Three 30 sounds better than the POD for direct recording. I too am not a fan of Line 6 products, other than the DL-4 delay unit (great pedal, but mine died on me).

Same, I'm not sure why they hold their value so well compared to the V1s and POD X3 products.

For what it’s worth, XT (with model packs), X3, and Vetta are all the same modelling and tones will be the same (within reason, allowing for different quality AD/DA converters, and perhaps different processors for the new stuff). X3 can also do dual amp like the Vetta (unlike the XT). Though the workflow is different for all of them. X3 is two discrete signal paths where Vetta is not, from what I remember.

When that POD are “new”had a hype, a little thing which contains many amps, the concept sounds great but the sound are... bad? Actually for studio-bedroom musicians, are better options or plugins who sounds a lot better for the same money or less of that POD
@thesociophobe84254 жыл бұрын
We often didn't have those options 20 years ago. What was your go to tone 20 years ago?

With good IR's I bet a POD can sound pretty damn good these days. That was the biggest piece of the modeling puzzle that was missing at the time.

Sonic Clang apparently used the XT on the Classic Doom 3 mod's soundtrack. That's probably the best I've ever heard this, and even then it''s still not that great. Interesting bit of history though!
