Mate, I love this video! 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿 I like your style of presentation, it's similar to our Kiwi guys, and so easy to listen to. You use the optimum number of words to say what you want to say and no unnecessary waffling which is superb. I didn't even feel any need to ff, I listened to every word. I grew up in the 60s and 70s here in New Zealand, with an incredible Dad who grew up in the bush by a lake, so I have a profound appreciation of the quality of your bushcraft gear in particular, especially the leather cases! Your whole kit is stunning, and I like your knife, saw and tinder kit, plus the organiser. Definitely a fan here, and much respect to you. 🌿 I love tramping in the NZ bush and I too love my full grain leather boots.

Also, I’ve heard both an Australian SAS instructor and also the author a ‘The survival medicine handbook’ say that eye protection is one of the most important pieces of kit to have in the bush

Protip for the shirt. Don't look at a hiking store. Go to a sports store and check out the gym and fitness shirts. They have a variety of fits and it's all polyester for when you get sweaty.

Strips of bike, motorbike & car inner tube make fantastic emergency fire🔥 lighters. They stink like crazy, but will burn for a good long time even when soaking wet 👍 Of course you cannot light them with a Ferro rod, only a flame will work.

"gear is really personal" I fully agree, I form a bond with my gear especially my knife and fishing gear... But wow. I've never seen such beautiful and personal gear. That tinder kit especially is so unique and beautiful. Everything is well used and it's clear that it's deeply personalized and thought out.

This kit is wonderful, thank you so much for sharing with us, I am really impressed with your organised system. The only advice I would give is if any one does happen to fall and have a suspected broken bone, please remember not to take nurofen, as a former sports medic, any anti inflammatory medication taken results in most hospitals delaying surgery until your body would have processed the pain reliever as it can both impact bleeding and also anaesthesia. Unfortunately in those instances its better to not take those meds until you receive medical help.

Nike dry fit tee shirt they are absolutely the best for everything... For relaxing to working and especially hiking it stays dry and if it gets wet it will dry extremely fast!!!! Also I noticed they almost never smell bad especially when you are sweating and working hard.

I have one camp pot/pan for cooking food and a metal cup for my hot drinks and sometimes cold drinks. The pot and pan are a combo deal... the pan is the top for the pot and a pan as well. The pot, pan and cup all have fold in handles for packing it away. So I do go with metal for all, to put it over or in the fire for cooking/heating. For drinks that are not hot, I do like to have a bottle or a thermos with cup top for that.

Love the set. Only thing you need is a thin 5v. solar panel with auto reconnect when going in and out of shaded areas. Comes in handy and can charge a 5,000mah portable battery while out hiking for 4-6 hours.

Considering you use merino wool long johns I'm surprised you don't like thin merino t-shirt for hiking. I'm using one through most of the summer for commuting on the motorcycle, and it keeps my skin nicely dry while not overheating me at all. Apart of that I'm using MoD issue CoolMax polyester t-shirts in the hottest days, and they're even better in cooling.

Silky is my brand for folding saws. I started out with cheap folding saws from Canadian Tire store (I'm in Canada) and they don't cut near as good and didn't stay in good condition long. My Silky saws are F180 Pro (fits in my pocket) and BigBoy Pro (for bigger jobs). I love them!

Great and practical loadout, huge thank you mate. I have been searching youtube for awhile now for a good camping first aid kit. I keep getting US prepping videos which deal mainly with combat wounds (or zombie bites) or the ultra light guys with 2 advil, a bandaid and a emergency beacon which really wouldn't help in our climate. Thanks again Scotty, you've helped me a lot.

Thanks for the great gear breakdown Scotty. Some really good stuff you have and obviously happy with. You know you down-talk that Rain jacket a bit... but if it's lasted you TEN years give it credit man. I keep a lot of gear for that long just bc I'm a cheap old man... but it's really really rare to see anyone else keep gear that long so it must be doing something right ;)

Good call on the InReach. Being able to communicate the problem prevents emergency services the unnecessary risk to themselves vs a plb where the alert is sounded and every agency goes hell for leather. Still recommend a plb in the kit as a backup tho. The bonus is being able to communicate with others, ie wife , family, mates, etc (non emergency), for pickup, gin supplies, storms, etc. Logical and functional gear without promoting trendy/fashionable brand names. Function before fashion! Keep it up mate 👍 Cheers 🍻

Oh and on the fishing. You seem like the type that would ‘get’ fly fishing 🎣 and the developed rhythm, skill, and luck needed to present the fly to the fish. Add the element of making your own flies and catching fish on said flies on natural or artificial materials takes it next level. Cheers mate

I use the same plb. I really like the device but I wish it had a more modern interface and was more responsive. It works great and does everything I want it to... used it many times for gps functions and of course texting the family on trips... but I also hate using it because it feels so clucky, slow, and 1990s. Feels like an old nokia to be honest. I suppose that can also be a good thing. It's fairly robust and durable. I definitely agree that it's probably one of the most important items you can own for that scenario. It's also pretty handy thing to own in general for emergency usage if you find yourself without a cell signal. The piece of mind, the maps, and communication. Worth every penny. But I'd definitely recommend renting them if you don't use it frequently. I paid around $850-1000 (cant remember exactly) and continue to pay the monthly $40 it costs me to use and operate it with the functions I like having (weather, text, trip tracking, etc). $$$

As soon as you begin using a tarp for shelter, you then need a groundsheet, and if you're in Australia, you'll probably need a mosquito net with a bathtub floor to stop the bugs attacking you - At that point, you've packed more in your bag than you would have with something like the tent that you showed which serves all three of the aforementioned purposes...
