I just bought a used 1988 OMC Cobra 4.3 liter engine/sterndrive. This is useful, thank you! Do you happen to know the size and maybe thread count of the dipstick screw at the top? Mine is missing and I can't find a replacement part. I'm going to have to substitute the right screw and maybe weld a piece of metal onto it for a dipstick. Any chance you know how far below the head of the screw the oil level should be? Thanks for any help! I'll watch your other videos as well.

Hallo, vielen Dank für das Video, es ist echt gut beschrieben, nur eine Frage habe ich: die unteren beiden Dichtungen habe ich schon gewechselt, aber die Dichtung von dem Öl-Messstab oben, hat eine andere Größe als die unteren...kannst du mir bitte weiterhelfen? Always fill from the very bottom hole until it comes out the middle. Not recommended at all to ever fill from the middle.the. Put screw back in n fill the rest from the top.Run engine put in forward n reverse the shut off n recheck oil level.

It depens on your motor. My 2,3 liter OMC needs 1774 ml (60 oz.)

Considering all the contradictory postings, now I'm scared to do anything with my outdrive's lube. Fill from center hole? From the bottom hole? If filled from the bottom hole, what keeps the oil from coming out when the tube is disconnected? What a convoluted bunch of bullshit, beginning with OMC's design. How many outdrives have been damaged by such mysterious oil-change procedures?

I'm doing mine from the top hole. If there's a dip stick to check fluid level I'll just fill until it reads the correct level.

It's based off of year whether you fill from the center or bottom hole. One this is for sure though you can ALWAYS fill from the bottom and that's also the smartest way to avoid air.

@@JGR1517 correct hes doing it wrong in this procedure. according to omc your suspose to fill from the bottom hole then once the oil flows from middle hole move pump to middle hole and fill the rest of the way... otherwise air pockets will form.

Way to show people how to wreck their outdrive. Fill from the bottom until oil comes out the middle hole, then plug the bottom and move to fill from the middle hole till oil reaches the dip stick. Your going to get an air pocket somewhere doing it like this. You know how I know? I did this and toasted the upper drive. Air pocket let loose and the level dropped. Was 850$ just in parts. You should delete this video. Some of us did it this way and you cost people money. Not cool.

you are wrong. this is a correct procedure recommended by OMC. The oil change was done using original manual.

I did it this way 2 days ago busted my gears and bearings from the upper unit to my OMC Cobra outdrive on my 305 small block. Can’t find any parts all shops say my best luck is eBay.. any help would be appreciated

@@adventure_guide He's actually correct. I'm looking at it in the 1995 OMC Vertical Drive Service Manual where it clearly says to fill from the bottom.
