Gear Review: Hults Bruk Almike Hatchet. A quick look at this very capable tool. The Almike is a great addition to my kit. From felling small trees to carving spoons, it’s a beautiful little axe.

I usually take my Laplander folding saw, even when backpacking (~7 oz). I can process whatever wood I need for a small campfire, and if I need to baton any I have my Mora knife. I have a couple hatchets, but honestly haven't taken them out in a couple years.

I can usually get by with just a Silky and my Garberg. However, when I’m cooking and maintaining a fire all day, big wood is preferable. Plus, I just love axes, hatchets, knives, saws, nunchucks and swords....haha.

Good review. Do you think you'd have better luck splitting by using another 3-4 inch branch as a club or baton to which the back of the hatchet head after the first strike instead of trying to hit the same spot repeated times?

I lived in a metropolitan setting for 17 years and always knew that it was not my natural state. Since, I've moved to the PNW to get "back to nature". (No, I'm not rich and am not from California.) Just purchased the Almike hatchet, a Boreal 21, and I'm looking at getting a bushcraft knife and full-size axe to round out my sharps. Any advice on bushcraft knives, and what do you think of Gransfors Bruks and Hultafors axes?
@robpelton
@robpelton Жыл бұрын
Sounds amazing! I do have a Hultafors and it’s great. Granfors and Wetterlings are top notch. As far as a bushcraft knife, I’m a big fan of Mora. I’ve used knives from many companies and I settled on the Mora Bushcraft Black. Very affordable and a great knife. Thanks for watching!

I noticed when you went to split that you didnt go to the natural check in the wood. I could see you where 90 degrees to the check. Maybe this was by choice to show the hatchet or maybe by mistake but I can see you do know a good amount about the what you are doing so just wanted to throw that out there from one woodsman to another.
@robpelton
@robpelton 4 жыл бұрын
Yep! I chopped it across the check to make it a bit harder. I honestly didn’t think that piece would split. Then I dug the damn blade into the dirt. Ugh. Dumbass move. Haha. Great catch and thanks for watching!

funny story...i have a small hatchet that ive used since i was a kid. it was my dads and maybe his dads. ive used it and abused it 1000s of times. lately im into watching these axe videos and today for the first time i thought i would check it for markings....its a hults bruk for fuck sakes! i cant believe i own a swedish made axe! and its sharp with no nicks on the blade. i even think i chopped rocks with it as a kid.

Chop much? Always set what you're splitting on another piece of wood so your ax/maul/whatever won't go into the ground. you dulled your hatchet by letting it penetrate the soil.

Now this is a hatchet not an ax there is no point in trying to cut a full grown tree with it when I work with mine I'm always making sure I keep it nice and clean and sharp everytime. I use it it's like a machete you clear brush with it and other small tasks if u want to cut a tree down buy a full size ax then again there are chain saws I would rather bring this hatchet in the woods with me then have a full size ax with me
@robpelton
@robpelton 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. The point was to over use the hatchet. We clearly did and it exceeded its use. I also tend to never need a full size axe in the things I do. Thanks for watching!

@@robpelton I must apologize. My comment should have been explained. Choosing the right tool for the task is key to achieving the goal and doing so in safety. Your in the bush and medical help is not readily available. When I seen you tackling a 10 inch tree with a hatchet and a small silky saw I couldn’t believe it. This is how people get seriously injured. Why you didn’t collect small wood was beyond me at the time. Now I normally don’t comment on videos but felt I should at this time. I probably should have thought before I responded so poorly. Again I apologize. You guys enjoy.
