Wow! That was really neat seeing the matches keep working after being in the snow and the water.

I bought these and tried them out now I carry these in every survival and camping bag I have I love these matches.
@sama1s2d310 жыл бұрын
In general, I really like these matches. I recently took these camping in northern Minnesota and I found a couple of things: 1) They are more windproof than they are waterproof. You can't blow the things out! Had trouble lighting my stove in strong wind with REGULAR matches. These worked great!! 2) Striker limits "waterproofness". One day, it was spitting light rain/mist and I had more trouble. You seriously have to keep the strikers dry-- which can be tough to do. Very quickly, all my strikers got damp and the matches became almost impossible to light. Box striker wears out quickly (dry or wet- especially wet). After you open spare strikers, they are exposed with no protection. DO NOT store them with the matches!! The manufacturer should repackage strikers in a bag like the matches. Bring your own bag! 3) Yes, the matches themselves are waterproof and do burn under water. But older ones (1-2 yrs) CAN get soft & crumble- buy fresh ones!

@XKrateX360 similar matches have been around for MANY years, these just happened to be the nicest most reliable I ever used....
@HagiTakanashi113 жыл бұрын
The reason why they stay lit is simple. It is a long matchhead however a oxidizer is added. You need 2 things to burn oxygen and fuel. The match head part is the fuel, the oxidizer would provide the oxygen, a well known oxidizer is potassium nitrate (KNo3) or saltpeter. It won't burn on its own but when you add fuel it burns violently because it supplies lots of oxygen.

Love how I got a call at almost the exact same time as you did in the video! What are the chances ?
@kroatoatexan59067 жыл бұрын
idk if they improved the extra strikers since you made this but I know first hand and from another youtube video that the newer strike pads work when wet.
@social3ngin33rin13 жыл бұрын
my educated guess would be that the energy generated through friction is transferred to the water which causes the match to not light in the other match set :) they are likely porous and take in water, while the other match must not be as much. so eventually you will rub the wet part off and reach the dry center required for your survival :)
@astrangeone9 жыл бұрын
I've seen someone use sandpaper as a striker for these things. I might have to pick some up, they are much more simple than firesteels!

To clear up the comments about how its able to remain burning under the water, the matches have their own oxidizer (makes its own oxygen basically, guns can fire in space because bullets have an oxidizer)

@89Interceptor11 жыл бұрын
those are badass i might have to buy some
@anabelsanchez24379 жыл бұрын
Usually, if your matches are wet, so is the strike pad. If I'm going to worry about keeping my striker dry, I will also worry about keeping my matches dry. Really, any "wet" situation where these matches would be usefuI would likely end up in the pad getting wet. :/ I make "strike anywhere" matches covered in wax which are fabulous. They stay dry and it will not matter if the strike pad is wet. I carry several types of fire-making tools within my gear; such as lighter, matches, flint & steel, magnesium, magnifying glass, plastic wrap, etc. I also carry regular matches and strike pads in waterproof bags. These would be excellent in high wind situations, though.
@hardedar96479 жыл бұрын
Anabel Sanchez so are you assuming that the strike pads in the plastic wrap are just for show?
@anabelster9 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean. But I'm not assuming anything. What I am saying is that, as an ex-smoker and fire-making hobbyist, I can tell you that a perfectly good and dry strike pad will quickly get wet in a drizzle and become obsolete. It does not matter if I kept it sealed in an airtight bag. Once I pull it out to use it, it's done. Strike anywhere matches do not need the pad.
@DaRealPianist9 жыл бұрын
+Anabel Sanchez You said flint and steel plus magnesium if you have a flint you have magnesium -_-
@anabelsanchez24379 жыл бұрын
I carry a high quality ferrocerium rod (iron/cerium). As far as I know it does not contain magnesium. And magnesium particles.

there in lies the problem with "safety" matches. Strike anywheres are by far my favorite, I use the file on my SOG multitool to strike them, and the file can be sodden wet. You have to make your own waterproofing for the matches though, I've heard dipping them in candle wax works well
