I was there when Redcliff used the Subspace tripmines during their final battle against the Korblox at the Battleground site of the Wizards Tower. They told us conscripted visitors & guests, Guardia, and initiate wizards that the tripmines were put there to keep us safe should the enemy approach: but they were wrong. It was just before the wizard tower had fallen from the Sky, that Korblox in desperation to capture it sent out 3 generals: 2 were melee, 1 fell to the spells and wizard staffs and another fell to those of us armed with basic bows and linked swords but the last one was different. He waited until all of us got close to shoot a single arrow and when one noob got hit he ran in a panic: right into a tripmine. The resulting blast acted like a chain reaction and everyone was scattering, running and firing bows and magic in a panic. My cousin Medina55 a veteran of tournament battles, Twigo his close friend and Uli who while always having robux preferred his simple World War II hat, did their hardest to keep all of us grouped up to stay calm. Just as Uli made the suggestion of picking off the last Korblox General with bows, a fool hardy guest armed with a sword attempted to get close to the General in melee combat but their action resulted in their death from a tripmine and the resulting blast caught Uli: everything but his hat became a sharp color of pink as his bricks scattered about the battlefield with his hat landing on the head of my cousin, Twigo cried Uli's name with grief as Medina55 led us a clear path to the final General. The Korblox General only saw a single guest out of the fog of war and walked forward and saw 2 noobs saying that it was too easy. But then he saw more figures on the on the hills before looking around and realizing he was surrounded: Guardia blocked his exit from behind, the wizards and initiates had the high ground and us visitors and guests were rushing to mob. The Korblox General tried to fight back but when one player was oofed, 2 more would take their place. In desperation from having low health, the General ran straight to the wizard tower and everyone gave chase to stop them. The Korblox General then became the fall to the fear of psychological warfare phrases such as "1337" and "anime" and just as they were about to climb the wizard tower at its base, there was the multiple sounds of beeps and we all ran back because we all knew what it was: an accidental cluster of Subspace tripmines. The Korblox General tried to run but had no time left: it was a massive blast of pink, sound crunch, lag and the scattered bits of the Korblox general as the wizard tower suddenly and slowly tipped downward to fall below to the land below the clouds. After the battle we were given some in Exile hats, so that's a plus.

as a 2009 player, i've built up a HUGE gear inventory not only do i have that treasure chest gear LOL, but my favorite gear of all time was the golden fleece from percy jackson, which was an event gear for completely free the ability to use it in game was limited because it required every gear genre to be allowed, but it just let you fly infinitely without any restraint which was really insane LMAO

fun fact: the ww2 guns actually still work. but most of the animations are just gone. for example, the M1 garand still fully functions, but the only animation that plays if when you reload and fire the gun. there is no idle animation and the gun is just tilted in one hand

I think Gear could be repurposed into an expanded form of Emotes. What they could do is allow Emotes to include props, sounds, and visual effects, which would especially work well if they allowed UGC for animations/emotes. This way you could have all the novelties of Gear without it breaking much.

i think gears would actually be allowed if they; 1- worked 2- worked 3- were updated, probably in terms of either models or maybe animations 4- updated/worked in general and plus, roblox makes it somewhat intricate when you want to turn gear on. by itself, gears are disabled anyways. and the fact that gears are broken means that nobody really buys then, thus making them unused. and if you buy it for one specific game, you might as well have been better off buying a gamepass weapon for that game, since you can't exactly use the gear anywhere else.

Well what happen was, roblox layed off there gear developers, which the last two went by the userrname starwars and takeohonorable. From what I heard from my friend is that when He was working with a Roblox who manager barely communicated with him, and the higher ups at that time were not anything with updated gears my friend submmited, to makes matters worse it took months for roblox to get the gears updated on there system and wensite, something as easy as uploading models shouldn't have taken at least a week. On top of that the other gear dev was barely doing anything with the gears, He'd ethier just do a poor job at it,, copy exisiting script from others gears, flat out have no script in the newer gears. Let me give you an example, winter great sword would of done nothing, it was thanks to takeo for going in fhere and actually giving it a function to able to make use of it. Other gears starwars has scripted would only do very little damage or flatout be really uncreafive, for example some of the newer swords only did like 10 damage, a robloxian default health is 100, that isn'r much. There was also a gear that was a mimic monster in the shape of cooler, it been cool if yoy coukd deploy that like a trap and have lash out at it victoms but starwars only made it into a crappy compainaion pet gear. Starwars litterly was mooching off roblox while takeo was putting in the effort.

The funny thing about gear breaking is that they didn't all simply "break". Some did, but a few of them actually got weird glitches at different points in time . My favorite one of these was with the shrink potion, usually you'd just drink it once to temporarily shrink, but before it completely broke and became unusable, you were able to click multiple times to drink more than once before it activated, this would make your character shrink several times, but because you weren't meant to do that your limbs separated and you kinda looked like Rayman...and when you grew, for some odd reason your growth back to "normal" was multiplied based on how many times you clicked for the initial activation, but your limbs would also be nonsensically reaaranged and sometimes even become plain cubes, turning you into some sort of giant mass of cubes at worst, and I mean HUGE, maybe around 200 studs. You couldn't walk very well in this state, and sometimes you couldn't walk at all. I remember just turning myself into a huge roadblock this way in some obby. It's too bad these glitches weren't documented, I can't imagine how many others broke for weird effects like this. Another happened with the Wizards of Astral Isles cape that usually just made you walk faster and glide if you pressed spacebar in midair, but after one update, if you pressed spacebar in midair at a specific time, your character would endlessly be shot upward until you let go, and from there you could glide normally. You shot up FAST too, so you could reach insane heights using this trick. Nowadays though, the shrink potion is just plain unusable last time I checked, and the cape just kind of works as intended (I think the glide mechanic just straight up doesn't work now), so that's too bad. I kinda liked them better glitched out.

Gears would've probably stayed alive for much longer if Roblox actually decided to classify them properly and didn't make them such a nuisance. It's the fact they kept making gears that were blatantly overpowered, heavily disrupted games, or incredibly annoying that lead more and more developers to disallowing them, to the point where there wasn't really a reason to buy gears, nonetheless continue making them.

Another reason developers generally disabled gear past a certain point, aside from your points, is because they're just really annoying to work with. They were fine for stuff like very simple hangout games, but for actual games they were essentially non-modifiable black boxes you couldn't change at all unless you were willing to replace them, and tough tits trying to do that when they were actively adding them. There was also genuinely no benefit to actually allowing gear in, at most you could sell gear trough your game's storepage and get a cut if someone bought it trough your game, but that was it. All of that is why games only really implement them as in-game items, that way you actually get to control and adapt it to work with your game, you can limit out the weird ones (the multiple social ones that allowed you to hurt other players), and can actually benefit by selling it as a gamepass or in exchange for in-game currency

They’re also used to be a feature where you could allow specific gears into your shop of your game, but now that feature is removed, but it used to allow you to have a radio game pass that works and other games as well. My favorite was the fireworks. You recieved the 2010 one for free if you played the night of the new year at the end of 2009/start of 2010, which I did so I got it. It was classified as a social item, but it makes a deadly explosion like any explosive weapon. So for a while, it was allowed in many many games. But it goes straight up, you might be thinking, how could you use it to kill players? Simple, by jumping. Back then jumping made you throw your arms up even with items held, so you now have the firework pointed horizontally. Aim and fire. Boom.

It's funny because although gears are pretty unusable and broken now, there's TONS of gears that inflated a lot such as Kawaii, Dino, Skelefriend, Alpaca... Going from 2K RAP to over 100K Value for some of them. Because ekittens loves wearing them in their avatar... If you didn't know or forgot to include in the video, some gear were updated, this included Periastron series ofcourse, On January 11, 2019, Roblox updated all Periastron with new ability and pose for your avatar, Example is Green Periastron originally acted like Linked Sword but shoots laser after lunge. Luckymaxer and TakeoHonorable (Former administrator) was the people that updated broken gear. Despite it being updated, it's only the limited or expensive gear that were updated, plus ofcourse, game wouldn't still let them allowed, it's just a overpowered gear you rarely see someone with it legitimately ingame.

Some additional issues were: 1. There was no balance, they rolled out items like the Hyperlaser guns which were one hit KO, which, sort of not great for balance reasons 2. You couldn't choose to NOT bring every single gear item you own if you enter a game, which is a problem if you have 20 pages of gear

it's already sunsetted after 2019 that they shipped to remove gear buying section from your game where you have specific category added into the list, and because of the new changes on the site, that option to pick gears aren't even there but they kept the gear section in catalog cuz devs also need it to recode or make it their own too

Y'know what? I don't even play Roblox, and this got recommended to me randomly, but it turned out to be a halfway decent video! It honestly baffles me that the Roblox devs thought gear was a good idea to begin with, with so many of them being "cheat" items that go against the games people design in Roblox. I imagine the higher-quality games banned these entirely?

Something nobody talks about is the fact that some gears only work if you have them “equipped” onto your avatar when you join a game. I have literal dozens of gears that I can’t even use unless you use that method. To be honest chances are you have one too that you haven’t noticed.

I been playing Roblox for 8 years, when i first joined i remember gears were just starting to die but lots of games were still allowing them, im pretty sure at some point gears were super relevant and helpful and not useless decorations for your avatar. They also dont work anymore because roblox game devs don't have an option to make their game serversided, which would make gears work.

Why couldn't Roblox just turn gears into a limited? They could be making so much more money off of it. Yet they aren't for whatever reason, its a no-brainer move. Gears have died a long time ago, we are living in 2024. Which somehow survived beyond the tickets removal despite very little purpose it has today.

Absolutely loved gear during their main years of activity. I joined back in 2011, but there was a game I used to play almost daily called "Found Your Empire" that was a mix between joining one of 8 teams (Romans, Greeks, Vikings, etc.), building whatever you wanted with the blocks that were near your team's spawn, and the fact that it allowed all gear. Eventually, servers devolved into those with gear trying to get griefers to leave by using every combat-related gear under the sun, since griefers could delete hours of work in about 2 minutes. The game came with a linked sword and a really old bow tool, but compared to gear- anyone using the default stuff got outpaced pretty quickly unless they could pull off a lucky swipe. The game's still up, but the most 'recent' and last update (2014) was hastily made to shut me and a few others up that had been complaining about griefers being a near-constant problem. The update ended up including the free model "fire virus" that used to absolutely demolish game performance with lag since I'm pretty sure the creator included free models of whatever was included to change up the map. But by the time that update had come around, gear was already starting to get neglected by Roblox devs, Found Your Empire was no longer a front page game- so visitation was already way lower than before, and most of the players that wanted to keep the game alive were burned out (at the time) from having to swat away griefers for about a year straight. And because the owner forgot his account password or some other nonsense, the game will never be updated again and will remain a laggy mess that doesn't represent what it was originally. All that said, I'll always remember building stuff with my friend Renegade and lending him the gears that could be dropped to smack around the griefers or to duel with each other. There were other games that allowed gear that I really liked as well, such as Speedboat Battle and Gear Wars (or Gear Islands, something like that), but Found Your Empire was my go-to.

I remember there were a lot of Roblox clans that had places that were their clan's "base", and a lot of them allowed gear. I remember using a katana to spam W then left click, which would turn your character 90 degrees forward and spin you, but gravity didn't affect you during the animation. I used this to get into places I was not allowed.

I remember back in 2011 Roblox released the 'Blast-a-ton - A Level Up Contest Prize' gear for free, a little cannon with random effects, which included some harmless stuff like confetti, but also poison darts and multiple exploding pellets. This gear in and of itself was fine, however there was a massive issue that went unfixed for weeks; it had no type assigned to it and therefore was allowed in EVERY SINGLE GAME. you could bring it to sword fighting tournament (popular game at the time) and just win every round just by shooting people with explosives and i made sure to exploit it as long as i could.

I feel like Roblox kind of forgot about gears. They were popular from 2009-2010’s as most games allowed gears, the issue now is that games don’t really need gears. Gears existed for the sole purpose of adding more content to games as back then many games lacked any content whatsoever. Gears were especially popular with the skateboarding trend before the skateboards broke due to modernised updates. Gears can’t really be in newer games as they would break mechanics and some gears are incredibly powerful, such as the teapot turret. A gear created by former intern ‘clockwork’. Also some gears just dont work as intended anymore. I wouldn’t say they are are a scam though, We were just too late experience the popularity of Roblox gears.

I vividly remember a gear called the Birthday Piñata. It did exactly what the name implies, except of candy, it dropped an assortment of ranged and melee weapons. Ignoring THAT implication that some freak is putting weapons in kid’s piñatas, if you did enough damage to it in a game that allowed gear but didn’t have weapons, you’d immediately be considered a hacker because you’d inevitably go on a power trip and singlehandedly turn any place that allowed the piñata into Ohio.

In a nutshell: Roblox stopped caring about them and almost every game except Gear specific games disabled them. Roblox has experimented with the idea of making Gears cosmetic instead of being piles of paperweight in people's inventories but not sure if that'd taken off, cause like you said, Roblox is motivated to do something only if it brings money or more players to the platform. Making Gears cosmetic only really benefits people who've already purchased Gears and might not even boost Gear sales that much.
