18:00 If i could give my younger self any advice on setting up a pattern it would be this. It’s very simple. All you do is center your drive side “contact patch” root to crown (bottom to top) by adjusting pinion depth. If the patch is flat on one side that means it’s off the edge of the tooth face and should be brought back to the center. And center the pattern heel to toe (left to right) with backlash. Nothing else matters.

Hone out the pinion bearing and by an extra. You can slip fit it for trial and error before using the real one.

I like the grease behind the race. It makes me paranoid. I'll put my mirror on a stick up in there to make sure she been sent home. That bent needle on the dial indicator let's me know she's seen some stuff and has been a real trooper. Haha

F more specific, this is exactly what I needed to see after 2 days of pulling that carrier in and out and swapping shims back and forth and dial indicators and and inch pound beam wrenches… My pattern is just about how you said, not too high, not too low and a nice even mark, backlash is at 8, my only concern is that I over-crushed the sleeve to about 30 in/lbs but I’m thinking about leaving it because I’m sick of taking it apart, that reading was with the seal on too so maybe it gave it a little extra drag, at least that’s what I’m telling myself so that I can feel a little better about it, oh, so it’s an 8.5 in a Squarebody, the spiders went and trashed some shit up so I pulled it all out and went to 3:73’s instead of the 3:08s, first time setting gears and all the videos stressed me out with all the overkill “You can get a bad reading if the wind is blowing from the north”, “If you’re not sure about your contact contact pattern take a picture and send it to NASA..”. This video is just what I needed to see, thanks bro

Hello Just Dex It. I've got a Ford Ranger with a differential 4.10, the ring gear has 41 grooves and the pinion ten, the question is if this same ring gear can work smoothly with a eleven grooves pinion?

You do realize that pinion you just stuck in with the crush sleeve is supposed to be set at 20 inch pounds of swing right not just oh this feels good. Setting up the pattern the drive side and the coast side should be center of the tooth. At least you got lucky on that. Backlash is not for oil clearance. It’s to make sure the gear is riding deep enough with the pinion if you’re a shop invest in some tools

Why every video I watched . They say don’t great up your bearings when assembling. Do they go in dry or grease up like this guy did? 😮

Some people say yes and some say no??? It seems like that fucker would be on there so tight that it wouldn't matter either way? I'm doing a 4.88 in a 90 2.5 with 31s in about two weeks.... It definitely isn't a hard job. So far it seems like ordering the parts and gathering materials is the hardest part.
