That's awesome to see man congratulations to you. I picked up some weight so I'm back to 300 lbs again. I would love to be down to 200 Ibs by Summer I don't know if that's going to happen or not. I've been using the Vargo for a couple of years. The teeth ARE very handy for dealing with the mass of small roots under the surface. As far as the handle, do yourself a favor and run a few turns of sports tape around the grip of the Vargo. It'll help with gripping and prevent the metal from digging into your hand. It also helps with finding the Vargo in low light, because that finish has a way of blending in with the forest floor in darkness or low light.

Been using the two for three years now... head room and shoulder room can't be beat. Lots or room for two people and some gear inside. Ease of set up ... less than 5 minutes. Used it on my JMT thru hike this past July. Only down side is a bit of sagging when wet so you need to re-tension the guylines. The foot print is big so harder to fit in small spots.... that being said we had not problems setting it up in any of the areas we camped along the JMT.

I'm a huge Gossamer Gear fan. I don't have the tents but I have a dyneema cut the same way. You're gonna LOVE that tent. I'm on my 2nd pack from them and I'd say any trekking poles are better than none. I've used them since day on - where they were absolutely necessary. I'll buy a new pair if I forget them (twice). I would however say no to carbon fiber. Carbon fiber strong enough would be heavier than aluminum. Used properly they're abused on their best day. Aluminum (Black Diamond) all the way. I can see the folks at Katadin and Sawyar screaming at the top of their lungs "re-tool the machines, we gotta add caps" that is a real snazzy add. You had a great christmas. It's permit season....are you heading out west?

Just FYI….nonstick pans shouldn’t be used directly on a fire. There’s a temp limit rating for nonstick coatings and fires can get crazy hot my dude haha. My advice for the best life and performance…try and shoot for medium heat in backwoods for nonstick. Nonstick pans are NOT meant for high temp cooking. If you take anything away from this…please….for the love of god….no high temp cooking with nonstick pans.

well, the sawyer squeeze has a cap (top cap), too, and has the option of closed cap or sport cap (push/pull). Yes, the Sawyer doesn't have a bottom cap, but considering the Platypus bottom screw cap doesn't have a lanyard of any sort, it is the first thing that will invariably get lost. I use the hydrapak quick connect anyway, so no issues with disconnecting and leaking or losing a cap (regardless of which one). The other issue with the platypus is it isn't inline compatible. Pros and cons to both.

A tent?! Honestly, I fully understand. There are a few places I want to go/camp that are not ideal for hammocking. I've taken one with me a couple of times and using it instead of a raincoat was great. However, the underside of the umbrella becomes a haven for mosquitos, deerflies and horseflies. The silver umbrellas. If you remember GoLite Backpacking gear. I got 2 of them from them about 12 years ago before they went out of business. I'm still using the one and the other is set aside to use when or if ever the 1st one breaks. I use it more for shade during the Summer which lasts almost 11 months here in Florida. It also works quite well in the rain if you wanted to use it for that. We get what we call Sun Showers , the sun is shinning and raining at the same time. Used as portable shade it does make things a lot cooler , probably 10 or so degrees.

No need to store it in a bag at night! It’s also a bit more narrow. The filament bundle is smaller in diameter than the squeeze’s but a bit longer so the flow rate is about the same. Great vid! My two cents (that aren't worth 2 cents)... The Gossamer Gear tents are awesome except for ventilation/condensation... I'm in Arkansas and had the worst condensation experience I've ever had with The Two... outside of that, it was my absolute favorite tent I've used... I'm now using a Durston Gear X Mid 1 & 2. I've gone back and forth on the LT5s because I too hear a lot about breakage. I settled on the REI Flash Carbon poles. A wee bit heavier but thicker carbon walls l, so they shouldn't break as easily. I'm going to give the QuickDraw filter a try too! I like my BeFree but have found after a handful of uses, I've got build up and flow rate decreases a lot.
@PisgahGravelProject2 жыл бұрын
I've used pretty much every kind of filter over the last couple decades and I keep going back to the OG Sawyer squeeze. They're bomb proof, work well as a squeezer or a gravity, super easy to back flush. I used the platypus filter for 200miles last summer and I'll say this, the flow rate was slower than the og sawyer and clogged frequently. I compare the platypus filter to the Sawyer mini, the platypus filter is slightly better than the mini, but not by much. It's a trade off, if you don't mind back flushing your filter every day, and don't mind doubling the time you wait for water to get filtered and want to save 2oz, then the platypus is the filter for you.

Some nice new gear to check out. That skillet has my interest I'll have to look into that. I just switched to the Nitecore from my UCO Air. The air has been a great headlamp the last couple of years but its time for something a little different.

I would end up loosing that cap on the filter. I wonder if it is the same size and thread as a pop bottle cap?
@john_kelley2 жыл бұрын
No. It’s definitely bigger.

Its made to fit on smart water bottles

Good choice on the Petzl Bindi. I have one and I love it. I tie it to the ridgeline of my hammock and it never gets lost. You could always put some reflective tape on it as well since the housing allows the lamp to rotate up and down. Super lightweight and plenty of visibility.

All of my gear. I bought everything from scratch last month and now I'm itching to get outside.

@@john_kelley I'm on alltrails right now looking for something to start with. A lot of the trails near me have burned the last few years, unfortunately.

I'm very interested in the gossamer gear "Two" tent but my only concern would be how low the bathtub floor looks. Let us know how well it does keeping rain out. Thanks bud. 😀

I’ll eventually review it.

To be clear....we all know what a bindi is right? who named it that

I’m assuming your talking about the red dot on Hindu women?
@no.95162 жыл бұрын
@@john_kelley Alittle more complicated than that but yes. Using ancient customs for marketing always seems like a risky and boarderline disrespectful move.

I feel like there’s probably a reason for the name, but I honestly couldn’t tell you what it is.
@wanttogo19582 жыл бұрын
Bindi also means butterfly in Australia and there is a low growing weed that is called by the same name in Australia. Of course it is also the name of the red dot worn by married women of several faiths, in particular Hindu. The symbol has further meaning than just a sign of being married for a woman. Look it up. I'm not from India and don't follow the Hindu faith but I don't see a problem with using that name for a headlamp that is very light and used to protect you from unseen danger in the night as well as show you the way. My two cents anyway. Oh, and I prefer the two button NU 25 over single button headlamps and have used both. Again, a personal preference; your mileage may vary. Take care and Hike On! Martin.

@@john_kelley at 1:52 you said you don’t do gear reviews on your channel. So I was curious. Btw you are going to like that trowel. I’ve been using it for a while. You can dig a deeper hole faster so better for LNT.
