I'm also not a fan of the clickbait titles, but if your data supports clickbait bringing you more views, I won't castigate you further, especially when the interviews with companies like nemo and sawyer are solid. Over the years I have had to let others use it on the trail because their water filter clogged or wasn't working. Over the years water filtration has changed. It amazing to see what it has become. I know carry both my Steripen and filters that fit on my soft flasks. The ease of dipping into a creek to grab water and keep on going is great. The only downside of my Steripen is the time it takes to sanitize my water.

Good interview. I used a Sawyer Squeeze for my AT thru-hike and it worked well. I started out with the mini but soon upgraded to the full size model because the mini took too long to filter. I've had one problem with the Sawyer Squeeze. After just a few uses, I let a Sawyer Squeeze sit for a year or so before using it again. I didn't test it before hitting the AZT, and discovered that it wouldn't work at all. I couldn't get any water through even after backflushing and letting it soak. Maybe calcium buildup? I don't know, I had to toss it. So test your filter before heading out.

I've seen people recommend soaking the filter in vinegar for 1/2 hour and then back flush it with clean water. Or soak overnight in vinegar and then back flush. There was even one guy on KZbin who added a step where, iirc, he taps the filter or shakes it to dislodge any debris that might still be in there and flush some more.

I never put it together. The permethrin I've been buying for a decade is made by the same company whose filter I've been using for a decade. Thanks Kurt.

I had my own advanced testing supplies to detect bacteria in water so I tested the Sawyer filter,, Micropur tablets, and Potable Aqua tablets. I ran the tests four or five times over a period of a week. According to my results, nothing eliminated the bacteria 100% but the Sawyer filter eliminated the bacteria much better than the tablets. I'm not a trained lab technician and my background isn't science so I'd like to see some professional comparisons done, but I will share with you that my amateur testing indicated that Sawyer is significantly more effective in eliminating bacteria.
