If you chamfered the gears, they’ll have less drag.

Basically, yes. But depending on the gear's profile the amount of chamfer can change the dragging by few percents.

makes sense to me, i remember doing the exact same thing back in '77 in my bedroom at moms trailer when i had to split the case on my rd-350 to change the broken shifter cam, she saw it and said, that piece of s**t ain't never gonna run again! when i got it back together she watched as it fired up on the first kick ;-)

6:13 I've definitely heard this weirdly on bigger bigger bikes only when accidentally resting my foot on the gear lever before changing to first. In fact you sort of feel it through the shift lever, not great for the box I imagine

Brilliant Matt, first time I split my cases, I got so distracted by the gearbox, I played with it for far too long😂😂😂 might have got stuck their drooling except I'm sane. Fixed the issues in the end. Glad you're showing this, many young guys ( like me at the time ) never get beyond putting oil in the engine and air in the tyres.

Thanks for this. I just used it as a post in Adventure Rider to demonstrate that once the clutch is disengaged the input shaft is no longer connected to the engine. Blipping the throttle doesn't affect how easy the gear change is. Unless the clutch is dragging....

Ah, this reminds me of when I first started driving. My wet boot slipped off the clutch as I was changing into reverse in my 1200 beetle. Never heard a bang like it. Thought I'd split the case in half or something but it was fine - on the outside anyway. I wasn't too eager to start messing around with gearboxes at that age so I just didn't use reverse until I got another car. Probably for the best anyway, that beetle tried to kill me on several occasions.

they are underneath, they are what slide the gears back and forth as matt pokes the screwdriver, he's rotating the shift drum that the forks ride in

Hi mate, i was thinking about the shunt when it's put ingear, isn't caused by slamming it into gear while the primary is still turning, due to the output being stationary it wil stop the primary dead, now i might be talking a load of bollocks but it sounded good. Cheers.

So when you go from Neutral to 1st and you get the CLUNK ( you can feel it aswell as hear it ) is that a good or bad thing ? My 2006 ZX10r does it even after a gearbox refurb ( some worn dogs and scoring on 3rd & 4th shift fork, not on the ears, further back on the meaty bit ), but my 09 Hornet just slips in from neutral to first without that clunk with a mild click. Kind of does my head in as its my 3rd bike, but my fucking favourite ( i wont use my 2017 Tracer 900 as a reference as its just a totally different era, but thats seemless in comparisson to both ). Wondering if I have a clutch problem or a fucking ape worked on my bike and can expect more of the same. Was the same before, is the same now minus the gear slips. Im going to get a PC3 put on it over the cold spell as ive removed the exup servo and decatted it. The guys would give it a going over before doing the work as it'll be dyno'd, but wanna go in knowing a bit before hand. I just naturally interpet the clunk as " Are you fucking ready to roll mother fucker ". Been watching all your gearbox videos, and pretty much all the others. Top Bloke. Keep calling these suckers out on BS !

The transmission has absolutely no idea what triggers the pause in the drive on the input shaft. The transmission can't distinguish between a throttle, ignition, or clutch blip.. All it knows is the input force has momentarily stopped

But the imput force (torque) hasn't been 'stopped' - that's the point - just wait for the others videos where I rig up the bandit gearbox and we actually measure the force with load cells

@@dirtygarageguy I know in the videos the force on the input was constant, I was referring to the end comment about how different types of shifting affect the transmission. I would argue that if done correctly quick shift, air shift, clutchless shift, and clutch would all affect the transmission the same. I can't wait to see some numbers though

@@dirtygarageguy Because it's engine oil not gear oil. And thru the clutch too? Also all these little bikes use a pressed together crank. Designed in short engine life? Cheaper? Gixxers and Z1s started with roller crank. Seems ridiculous. Good show.
