Paul, thanks for including the shift rail information. I'm the person that asked for that information in part 2. I did not test my rails prior to assembly. The difference in length and end type between the detents had stopped me from moving forward. I bought a new rail kit from David Kee several years ago, I will get the box back on the bench and give it another go. Again, thank you. Subscribed and liked.

I will forever remember my first Toploader build. Was one of the single most frustrating experiences I had with a transmission. They aren’t overly hard to put together, but you get into trouble real quick when you think you know better and attempt to do things out of order. 😂

just found your videos and this is truly gold. I Just rebuilt my M45 for a volvo rally car, not the same thing but very similar! I just wished i had watched your videos before i did it. Now I probably should disassembly it again and check some things. I have had issues with not getting the 2nd gear to go in fast enough. After watching your videos i think its the tooths on the sliders fault, (was quite worn).

Great content, perfect timing. I’m rebuilding one of these units myself. However, you might show or mention if the new 1-2 slider has the corresponding torque lock taper machined in it. I’m assuming they do. Based on the info regarding the torque lock system, provided in the second video, I just ordered a new 1-2 slider, as well as, a new 1st and 2nd gear. Thanks again for another great video.
@GearBoxVideo Жыл бұрын
I did in part 2. The explaination and rules are stated. All new gears have torque locking so all synchro sliders must match them.

Priceless tips thanks for sharing! One question - you mention Snap Rings have an "install direction". Can you explain or is there a video I can reference?
@brianbeardmore8795 Жыл бұрын
I found it! at the 13 minute mark of the Tremec rebuild video you explain... there is a wider and narrow side at the snap ring opening. the narrow side goes UP and the wider side goes down (basically) it's so the snap ring tool can grip on the narrow side when you have to remove the snap ring. If the wide side is up, then the snap ring pliers will slip and make it harder to get the snap ring out.

Hi Paul thanks for a great video. Do you use the same 12 thousandths clearance on 2nd gear as you do on third
@GearBoxVideo Жыл бұрын
There has never been a clearance issue. 2nd is fixed by the washer and mainshaft and usually ok. A tight clearance would require trimming the flange on the mainshaft.
@joe-hp4nk Жыл бұрын
I noticed you always replace bushings which is fine. For those who don't have presses and specials tools, is it all right to measure the bushing it see if it's really needs replacing to save us the trouble? Thanks.
@GearBoxVideo Жыл бұрын
If the bore is smooth, they usually are OK. It is when they are badly scored. Typically .005 clearance is what I like to see.

I can’t stop watching this rebuild series lol. But I have a few questions, have you ever worked with David Kee parts? Do you need torque locking gears & selectors for all gears, or just 2 & 3 since they’re the most abusively shifted into? Which taiwanese company did you say reproduces these gears? Is there a company that makes selectors with torque locking teeth on one side for 2nd or 3rd gear, & normal straight teeth on the other side for 1st & 4th? I feel confident from watching your videos, that I can do this myself! The satisfaction will be enormous, you’re awesome for making these videos
@GearBoxVideo Жыл бұрын
As mentioned in the video, all new gears are Torque locking and you can use non locking gears with locking sliders David Kee parts were featured in my book . Sunup Gear in Taiwan makes the gears

I got a question. You said that we need .012 clearance between third gear and 3 & 4 Synchro. What about second gear and synchro? Your look like there is some play... Mine no play at all. What should i do? Grind down the tab shim/washer or the second gear .012 is for each gear or just the third? Thank you

@@GearBoxVideothank you so much for your help! This explains why I’m having trouble. I went from a big block 352 to a 300 straight six. Do they make spacer plates? And where could I find them?
@GearBoxVideo4 ай бұрын
That is something that you are going to just have to mock up. Put the bellhousing on the engine with the trans and see where your shortcomings are. You may just have to extend the pilot bushing. There use to be a company that made an insert for the crankshaft that extended the pilot pushing when using short pilot inputs in different applications

Took out my 69 f100 with a 390 fe and 4 sp top loader for a ride last week and after a few blocks got to a red light, put it in 1st and when i was going to shift to 2nd it was hard to come out and it would not engage into 2nd, came to the next light and tried to put it in 1st and it would grind so i put it in 2nd ( was hard to shift into it) took off on 2nd and it was also hard to come out. 3rd and 4th shift good Notice that it just does it while the truck is moving, if im parked it goes into all shifts without forcing it. Any idea of what it could be?

Great work, one thing i am wondering, did you say all parts are new? if so WOW the cost must be through the moon. I thought you would be doing an old tranie with some decent and some bad parts? , maybe show your secrets of repairing the old not so precise parts and/ or how to do with what you got without spending a nasa budget. My main issue is some teeth on main shaft where the snap ring holds 3rd 4th synch hub, ..some teeth are missing, was wondering if that would cause any real problems, [regular shifting, not drag racong] but i see you got a brand new shaft, no need to deal with that i guess. nice to be rich,lol. but not everyone os jp morgan, that can buy all new parts.

The parts are actually not that bad cost wise. I will have costs up after this series is done
