Yeah I love Donut but the artificial market hype the trend of top 10 lists on the internet creates in any market is a menace on enthusiasts of anything. A few years back when I started getting in to wristwatches I almost bought a vintage Seiko 6138-3002 'Jumbo' chronograph for less than 150$USD in my local currency which at the time was an average price in facebook groups and whatnot. A couple years of some fucking dorks with youtube channels yapping about how the 6138 and 6139 movements are God's Greatest Gifts to earth or whatever and the cheapest Jumbo starts at 700$ USD. I really wish I bought that fucking watch when I had the chance cuz Im not going to pay that kind of money for a Seiko no matter how much I like them. Similarly, I really wish I had the chance to buy certain cars which are no longer reasonably priced.

I'm in the same boat. Air-cooled VWs, specifically bugs, were always obtainable to someone who was willing to put in a little time and savings for one. $5k for anything pre-1970 was often the most you'd pay, anything after was usually $3-4k. The barriers to entry were incredibly low, the only real barrier being that you'd almost certainly have to learn how to do at least basic maintenance in order to keep it running. Everyone who was willing to be dedicated was welcome to the air-cooled world. Today that is no longer so. Bugs are usually 10k for anything that runs or isn't completely rusted out. Buses are $20k for rusted wrecks and a running pre '68 bus starts at $30k and goes up from there. This was mostly due to wealthy types coming in and buying up or bidding up the cars that came up for sale, televised/streaming auctions also didn't help. People started demaning 7x more than what they were asking before for something because they saw something at Mecum go for $85K. Now when I encounter a nice air-cooled, I don't want to meet the owner. You can spot the cars that have been owned by the same person for years, and those people are usually worth talking to, but if it's something (overly) nice I just pass it by. I hate the fact that the car I bought for $3k six years ago is now worth $16k because someone like me is never going to be able to allowed entry to the air-cooled world ever again. The car for the masses is now only for the elite.

We have so many of the early evos here in sweden, they were mostly built for street/dragracing. What would be a realistic amount for a legit nice Evo 3 and GC8 STI Type-R v5 in canada atm? I dont see much love for them online. But the evo 1-3 was produced in only 5000 examples each. Thats in total as many early evos as there are R34 GTRs.
@tghidsgn3 жыл бұрын
In Canada, we can import cars not sold here after 15 years - the US is 25. You could get a nice Skyline GTR32 for around $10k back in the mid to late 2000s. As soon as they became legal in the states their prices doubled overnight. Dealers then wised up here and began hoarding R34s just to sell 'em to Americans for insane prices when they became legal.

In 2003 I bought a 5spd, super clean S13 hatch for $1,200. It had good paint, tiny rust hole by the third brake light on the hatch but I fixed it. No dents, good interior. Those days are long gone. I built it up to a decent 380hp track car. But I wish I would’ve kept the interior and kept it streetable. I remember gutting it and throwing away and giving away good parts. (I was 18 and dumb) . I miss that car so much.

You missed one of the biggest reasons. Kids who grew up with these on their walls in their bedrooms are now cashed up enough to be able to start paying for them and affording them. Just like the generations before us who pay 6 figures for an old family car at an auction like a Plymouth or dodge etc. The demand is out there and the supply is limited but people are willing to throw everything at it to have their childhood dream cars
