Bought my 06 STI brand new in Feb 06. Never modified at all, just flipped 103000 miles. I've done a slew of maintenance and items that have gone bad with age but drivetrain and such have never skipped a beat. Just when I think about modifying it I realize how much I enjoy the reliability and fun that the car gives me in it's stock form, and how much money I've saved by not going the modified route. What other Japanese turbo car still lives up to the hype of the 90s? The Mk V Supra is great, but Toyota is so departed from providing a driver's car that BMW had to make it for them. GTR came back in amazing form, but quickly spiraled off in price into 6 figure unobtainium. Beyond those basic flaws, we have the lack of manual transmission option, vague electronic assist steering, and all the other electronic assists that take away feeling and precise control.

With the old ej20t.. I remember a big problem was the in-line fuel rails. The last cylinder in the line would always get minutely less fuel than the rest but over time it made a difference to the heat etc in that cylinder. Swapping to parallel fuel rails was a good preventative measure to ring land failure in that last cylinder. I’m not sure if newer ej255 / 57s still run single fuel rails but it’s worth changing to parallel setup.

Very informative guys. Just bought 2 Subaru Legacy Gt Limited a month ago. The 2000 LGT which i LOVE. 220,000 AMAZING! The other is 2009 LGT with 230,000 and hoping the engine didn't seize. Dont know yet haven't had it diagnosed yet. Went into limp mode 2 miles from where I bought it. Was smoking after it shut off. I have hope for it tho. Thanks for the info.

Can't forget upgrading to an equal length header for power and reliability.

But, but... MA RUMBLE! haha!
@bb1ben4 жыл бұрын
@@R1Armadill0 Rumble vs Reliability 😂 It is part of the problem. Everyone wants to slap on an intake/exhaust/blow off valve so they can have cool noises but don't bother tuning it correctly. Also 2015+ WRX owners don't get a choice, no rumble for them lol

Thank you for making videos like this one that show realistically what you need to do overall for each stage for a popular platform.

This was great, please continue this series with other manufacturers! I'd be interested to hear about the common points of failure in the so-called *Bulletproof* engines, things like RBs and Honda K series engines

RB all you have to say is oil pump lmao
@quest87955 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'd heard that they suffer from oil starvation pretty bad haha I'd also heard that the connecting rods are a bit of a weak link in more powerful rb20s, but that was just something I read on the driftworks forum years ago when thinking about engine swaps lol
@valeriedunbar92275 жыл бұрын
Quest from what I heard RB25/26s oil pumps just outright shattered, pretty substantial oil starvation after that lmao

Great episode. Let's get some videos with the guy from Yates Auto and the 5 and 6 speed! Subaru transmissions are too much of a mystery to too many. Would love to see how he sets front diff gear lash, presses on and off gear sets, adjusts pinion depth and tooth engagement, ect. Would be super useful to the community!
