Great video. As an instructor, a couple of things were noted in the video. On the higher speed turns, you are not staying out and are drifting into the the turn. This is causing an early turn in and then you are having to fight the car on exit. Brake earlier, stay outside and wait for the turn in point, turn in, apex, and then track out. It is all about exit speed. Especially, with a car that has some oversteer. On slower turns, if you turn in later, and are slower, you can throttle steer the car to maximize exit speed and track out position. Another thing, your had position on the steering wheel is a disaster. Your hands are getting all crossed up. Keep your hands at 10&2. Then, when turning right, just before the turn, put your hands at ~9&1 (or 8& 12 for slower turns). The goal is to have your hands at 10&2 relative at the apex (though they are really at 9&1) Then walk your hands back to 10&2 as you exit the turn. It is all about being smooth, consistent, and maximizing the speed out of the exit of a turn. Anyway, keep having fun; you are doing great.

My parents made the mistake of buying an 85 mr2 as my first car. Having lived near the mountains, I took it to the canyons almost immediately after getting my license, and I am not exaggerating when I say there were moments where I should have gone over the edge from not knowing how to drive it. Snap oversteer almost had me throw my car over a small cliff at 60 mph. Eventually, I saved up my money from working at the local track (and used my employee discount) to actually track drive the thing at time attack and autocross. No car has ever felt as good to drive once I learned it. Not a built civic- not my old supra- not even a new Camaro SS. You simply cannot beat mid/rear engine once you learn to drive it. I miss that vehicle dearly- I shouldn't have sold it. But my new Nebraskan roads and winters aren't kind to cars like that. Enjoy your car. I know that feeling and miss it dearly.

Hey, Ben! AW11 Owner here! I just wanted to give you some pointers on pushing the car! I'm sure you know this already, but whenever you are approaching a curve or a turn, you either have to brake earlier than normal or reduce speed and stay on throttle. Even partial throttle keeps the mr2 from oversteer and rotating. The MR2 demands the driver to push the car to achieve maximum performance. It's scary for sure, but once you get the hang of the throttle, you'll be planted. Just never lift off; instead, lightly depress the throttle! Good luck, Ben!

@Jack-og9ox2 жыл бұрын
Having driven a modified MR2 spyder for about 5 years now, I've learned that you really need to go with a staggered wheel setup. 7" wide in the front, and 8" to 8.5" in the rear is a sweetspot that I've found, as it does a lot to combat the oversteer the car is known for. You'll probably need coilovers to make the space for that setup, though.
@haydenmcfarland31302 жыл бұрын
Driving an MR2 fast is partly setup partly driving. Both of which are quite different from a normal car. They are really more rear engine than mid engine like an old porsche. Soft suspension in the front with slow rebound to get the weight on the front wheels, and keep it there. Then break on the straight and use the throttle to balance the car through the corners and nail it when you are pointing straight. You cannot trail break!

So it's a little hard to tell exactly what's happening from video, but here are some things I have learned: if you really do have initial turn in oversteer (while off the brakes, in neutral) then problem #1 might be the front end link to lower control arm connection: there's bushings in there that you really have to crank down on. If you don't compress those enough it's basically like not having a front bar for turn in until they get loaded up. #2 you need to consider spring rates and sway bars together; if your rear spring rate got jacked up too much then it doesn't matter that sway bars are full soft all around. I liked stiff front setting + second softest in the rear with stock springs. MY OPINION however is that you are struggling in low speed entry/mid corner stuff, which is indicative that you need more maintenance throttle. stop messing around with making cool heel-toe downshift sounds and focus more on controlling the brakes going into the corner. Brake in a straight line, don't trail brake; the engine braking is enough to get rotation. You can even let the clutch out partway, without gas, to modulate the front/rear brake balance using the engine braking, but this is pretty esoteric. mid corner focus on maintenance throttle!
@GearsandGasoline2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, main thing I realized, as I noted in the video, is that you have to brake in a straight line, then get back to throttle on turn in. Just putting weight on the rear with a bit of throttle makes a huge difference. But definitely some small bar/alignment changes to make it a bit less knife-edge.
@ImBarryScottCSS2 жыл бұрын
@@GearsandGasoline 100% in any MR car you need some throttle to keep the rear loaded. Even very very small adjustments mid corner can induce oversteer. They are extremely rewarding when you get it right.
@nuttyDesignAndFab2 жыл бұрын
@@GearsandGasoline Ultimately you just want no engine braking, yeah. There's some ECU stuff you can do with DBW where it can get rid of engine braking for you (Aprilia rs660 has this feature, for example). I always considered doing something like that as a project to make the car safer for learners; alas I had cable throttle and have since sold the car :')
@ivan_b282 жыл бұрын
You should never use the clutch as you mention to modulate front/rear balance, that's just wrong. Not advising trail braking its wrong either, you just have to get the hang of It, be reaaally smooth letting off the brakes, and time It properly with steering angle. Takes time, its messy at first, but when done properly is the way to be fast. And i dont want to talk about the fact you told him to not heel and toe...
@chrishuyler35802 жыл бұрын
A pedal cam would have been great for these sessions so we could see what you were doing. I saw less trail braking issue and more lift off mid corner mistakes. The car should allow a little adjustment but heavy lift is gonna bite you.
@yaroslavburmaka14492 жыл бұрын
I don't know exactly what your rear setup is on the car but if you have a rear bar, remove it and tune with springs. Mr2s like a softer rear. Then work on bump steer correction at least in the rear. Static camber helps with strut cars also. One rule of thumb, tune the end that is having problems (oversteer tune the rear, understeer tune the front). Overall just looks like the car may be a bit too stiff and has some teething problems BUT looks like its at a great starting point!
@styledliving2 жыл бұрын
So what a lot of people get wrong about suspension setups on this car in particular, and Marc has alluded to it with very soft spring rates, is that 99% of coilover setups, that aren't stock, absolutely do not have enough suspension travel. When I hit the limit of my suspension travel, which is super pronounced at lower speeds in canyon runs, or at higher speeds on the track, once you hit the limit, 1) your back tells you that you f***ed up, 2) your car loses control. What SuperMiata did right w/ their suspension setup over Ohlins (which were the previous gold standard for Miatas) was produce a setup with way more droop travel so that when you load up over a bump, your tires remain in contact w/ the ground and allow your dampers to begin absorbing that shock immediately instead of after landing. This is incredibly important, and most track focused suspension fail to take this condition into account.

Some peaple even drive with less camber (~ -4° in the back) This might help with the oversteer everywhere.

@BryanHeitkotter2 жыл бұрын
Loving this series. Watching how the car handles, it appears the #1 issue making the handling tricky is sway bars. These cars love big front bars (or very stiff front springs). With an open diff, a big front bar will go a long long way towards helping to quell the inside rear wheelspin you're experiencing now with all that extra torque. Also softening the rear bar (or running the stock rear bar) can help with this, as the inside rear tire could use less load taken off it during cornering. It also looks like the car could use more front camber, hard to see where it's at from the video but it looks stockish. With a big front bar (Addco or similar) you can run something like 3 degrees negative camber up front and you'll get the win-win of both increased grip and better stability. That'll go a long long way to making the car feel and work better! Ultimately a LSD would be helpful but this is of course more involved than making suspension changes. Also the car looks a little unstable under braking at the beginning of the video. Have a look at all your bushings for wear or play if you haven't already. Or sticking rear calipers (a common issue). Keep it up!
@ErikSeastead2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have a 1" Addco front swaybar and a stock rear and it massively changed the car. The oversteer basically evaporated and the total grip went way up, a long with my autox times.

I'm literally stoked about how fast this car is now (i'm a proud owner of a slightly modded 1zz mr2, so i know the definition of "slow" haha) but at the same time i'm a bit sad that in video the mr-s it's kinda etiquetted like a "Widowmaker" while is problably one of the most "friendily" Midengined Chassis out there. Sure the new "heavy" engine+trans combo has changed the "balance" of the car, and i believe that with a little adjustment in the suspension/alignment areas it will be a completely different experience. I'm def not an expert and i'm talking with my little "trial/error experience" on my underpowered car but maybe trying to lower the front of the car a little more than the rear will help with the weight distribution, on top of that a good amount of neg camber and rear toe in will surely "calm down" the happy tail of the car, without the need of going with stiffer setups on the coilover/ARB (yes, i believe that stiff suspension isn't always better) . And last, a good set of brake disk and sport/Track pads are almost mandatory on track (Even with a nearly stock car, so just imagine with twice the power!), the difference is unbelivable even without changing the discs dimension . Anyway wonderful video, keep it up!

Tall ben is such an inspiration to see how far he has come with that driver mod💯

I'll be honest, this thing looks fun. If the oversteer comes on suddenly, stiffening the front shock to help keep the front from falling over as much the entries, while stiffening the rear bar to make it roll a bit less could make it more progressive and predictable. It will be more stable in low speed and less understeer in high speed. At least, thats what I'd try.

Quick tip. Don't downshift with significant steering angle. Many of the moments that I noticed were classic rwd downshift oversteer. I drove an M4 on a slow track this summer and it absolutely hated downshifts. I currently work full time as a driver and garage-street tune my own celica which I occasionally race so I know what I'm talking about :)

So how should he slow down to take the corner, just breaking?
@HanKamiBeats Жыл бұрын
@@study-tesh9542 Downshift and brake in a straight line, bleed off the brakes on entry and then introduce a little throttle. You should never downshift mid corner in a car such as the MR2.

@@HanKamiBeats so he did it wrong the entire time on that corner… How hard should he be pressing on the brakes before the corner? All the way down and squealing the tires on the pavement or easy breaking?
@HanKamiBeats Жыл бұрын
@@study-tesh9542 It depends. When you initiate braking you want to use all the available grip. For example slamming your brakes when going 30 kph is not smart, but hitting max brake pressure whilst going 180 kph makes a lot more sense. If your trust the car and you're willing to push, all you have to do is go just over the limit and then slow down just a tiny bit. Brake as late as you dare, if you feel like you could've braked later, brake later. When you brake just a hair too late, just brake a hair bit earlier :)

Doubles horsepower. Wonders why he has brake issues. Oh you youngsters. ;) Ribbing aside, I'd be getting a limited slip diff pronto. IMO, the ol' one wheel peel just isn't fun on a track. That alone should get you close to your goal time. Get Mark's help with the suspension/setup and you'll be way under 10's. Looking forward to future vids in this series to see the evolution of the car.

Hardest part about MR is ya gotta brake in a straight line and keep weight on the rear wheels during the corner to counter that oversteer. You could also be overdriving the car, which is a common folly of all younger drivers-- like me. Do that shit ALL the time.

Oversteering types: 4:27, the first one is "lift off" oversteer, from throwing the front of the car left too hard while trail braking, which lifted the heavy rear and lets it swing around. 4:39, power oversteer. The tyres are very busy with turning, hanging way out on the left side of their grip "performance oval". Adding power too quickly asked too much from the tires. Ben needs to recalibrate his gas foot so he can roll into the power slow enough to give the car time to rock back onto the rear tires more. This will remove grip from the front, possibly introducing understeer, but will possibly allow for more power out of the corner.

Oops, accidentally hit send. 4:56, he hit the curb while cornering hard. When you unsettle the car like that you need to unload the tyres a bit (corner a bit less) so there is a safety margin to handle the unstable grip levels

Ben, as he's over-steering towards a wall of trees, facing certain death: "Good grief! My word!" I'd be inventing new words and phrases.
