Hi I’m taking a HISET course now at my community college at BPCC & I was wondering if we will have to show our work for these types of problems on the actual test or if we just need to show we can get the correct answers using the calculator?
@LightandSaltLearning3 жыл бұрын
You only have to get correct answers. And, FYI, the HiSET doesn't necessarily use this calculator. In most cases, you will have a simple four function calc (add, subtraxt, multiply, divide). Here is the info from the HiSET testing service on the calculator Calculators "You'll have a calculator for the Mathematics subtest. If you're taking the paper-delivered test, your test center will give you a handheld calculator. If you're taking the computer-delivered test, it will be on-screen. Please note the subtest does not require a calculator; however, the decision for the type of calculator used is up to your state."

@LightandSaltLearning Жыл бұрын
There isn't one. The calculator performs operations. For example it can add numbers, or multiply numbers. But those symbols are not operations, things to DO with numbers. Those are relationships. They just say this is bigger than that or this is less than that.

Can you use the TI-30XIIS for the GED test or does it have to be only this one?

Although they are similar in many ways, they are not identical. The only calc you will be able to use on the GED is the TI30XS Multiview.

@@LightandSaltLearning When I went to my GED classes here in Tennessee they only let you use the casio fx 260 solar and they provide it for you during your test. I guess it depends on where you are. Thank you!
@LightandSaltLearning3 жыл бұрын
@@tobiernotobie That is the calc for the old GED test. Was this before 2014? When they gave you the calc, was it for the official GED test, the TABE test in class, or the HiSET or TASC? I promise, the only authorized calc for the current GED is the TI30XS Multiview. If your testing center is giving out another, they are in violation of testing policies and could lose their contract to administer the test.

Wow you are amazing!! Is it this easy to use for most problems or does it get more complex??
@LightandSaltLearning4 жыл бұрын
Yay! Glad the videos are helping. You are able to use this calculator while working on any word problems, algebra, or geometry the GED throws your way. This is at the higher end of the complexity that we need for the calc, so you shouldn't see it get much more complicated than this. Does that answer your question?

Hello, sorry this may be n dum question, but when you press the "square root" button it is the same button as the " exponent button" in last example. That is just a bit confusing to me. Because when is it a square root and when is it a exponent.
@LightandSaltLearning4 жыл бұрын
Great question! Many of the buttons on the TI do two things. The second function is written in GREEN above the button. You can access any of the GREE functions (like square root) by pressing the green "2nd" button before hitting the key. So, if I just want to square I press "x^2", but if I want square root, I hit "2nd" then "x^2". Does that make sense?

This may be a crazy question but how do you know when to use the minus sign or the negative? In parentheses it’s negative and when it’s not you are subtracting? Thanks and love your videos. Preparing for math GED 😖
@LightandSaltLearning2 жыл бұрын
This isn't a crazy question at all but a common one and one you definitely need clarity on when using your TI. As a general rule, when the _ sign is BETWEEN two numbers without any other operation being indicated (so, no multiplication for example), you should use the minus. I highly reccomend the practice of regularly reading your math aloud to better develop that understanding. Does that make sense?
@cherilopez83052 жыл бұрын
I keep getting the decimal answer each time I follow this. What am I doing wrong?
@LightandSaltLearning2 жыл бұрын
I am guessing that your square root symbol either contains too much or too little. Remember to 1) Use math print mode so your input looks like mine and you don't have to worry about adding parenthesis and 2) Use the RIGHT arrow AFTER the 1 to EXIT the square root symbol BEFORE typing 7^2 OR you may be using the x root button instead of square root. It is right above the square root, so that's easy to do. If you tell me what decimal you got, I can try to pinpoint the exact mistake you made. Or snap a pic of your calc screen and send it to me at lightandsaltlearning@gmail.com

@LightandSaltLearning3 жыл бұрын
The answer to that is kind of. "PEMDAS" as students often call it, isn't a mathematical rule at all, as some students believe. It is simply an acronym to help you remember the "ORDER OF OPERATIONS" (or when to do what when simplifying math expressions). You have two choices on the GED when on the calculator section. When faced with a multi-step expression to simplify, you either need to: 1) Know the order of operations yourself, whether you use PEMDAS, or my preference, GEMA, to remember it. OR 2) Know how to type these long expressions into your calculator correctly so the calculator can do it for you. This video is just meant to show you how to properly enter long expressions into the calculator so you can use it for that purpose. Does that make sense? If you want to go step by step yourself without the calc's help (also useful for the non-calculator section), I do recommend a review of the order of operations which you can find here www.lightandsaltlearning.org/0-math-101/order-of-operations
