Say what you will about his youth and inexperience the way he's introducing these moves is more practical and truthful than most of what the top masters in Okinawa and Japan are posting. None of these are blocks.

This movement also has more than a dozen other meanings))) The level of skill of a karate specialist is actually determined by how many meanings and possibilities of each movement he knows, and can use. The gedan-barai movement has so much potential that some specialist could make it the basis of his style.

Absolutely. It is very adaptable.

I like to think of gedan barai as a type of arm drag.

Let me give you a third option. It's similar to a block. I originated in muay Thai before going to Karate (I competed for about 8 years). Gedan Barai....if you open your hand and hook it back, it becomes the exact same motion that I often used to catch kicks. I would catch front kicks just with that motion. With round kicks, I would block with both hands and snatch it up with that motion to catch it. I didn't think about it being the same movement until I started training in Karate, but it really is.

This also in Aikido for Ai Hanmi katate dori ikkyo.

MrMattias87 you are correct that the aikido equivalent is Ai Hanmi katate dori ikkyo although this full name is specific to the wrist grab attack. More importantly however in Ikkyo much more attention should be placed on the shoulder as this is the joint under primary control in Ikkyo and the elbow is "secondary" to that only in the sense you are using the elbow to affect the shoulder joint. The initial Kuzushi is also different because it's actually in the opposite direction to this. The application of Gedan Barai as an arm lock whilst in my opinion very effective is actually a much simpler overall movement than Ikkyo which I would consider to be a more sophisticated joint manipulation, perhaps a video for the future. Thanks for commenting 👍🏻

Ikkyo in Aikido can be applied like this as you have demonstrated. And we can certainly use atemi waza in the process to acheive kuzushi. As long as we follow the principle of sankaku we can retain control.

sensei, can you make a video on age uke.when we do gohon kumite and sanbon kumite,it all feel right but i don't know why i don't find age uke fast enough to block upcoming punches in real situations.can you explain other ways to use age uke,if you can make a video about it,i will be very thankful.

Well I've already done one video on Age uke which you can watch here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/inTPY2SJp99kprs Let me know what you think and if it answers your question if not let me know what you want, also you may find these two videos useful the first is on the development of blocks to break your opponents balance to give you more time kzbin.info/www/bejne/nae6qopvl9mogLc and also consider this video on Juji uke, this is the 4th part in the series and after having looked at how it can be a lock, choke and nerve hold etc I finally show how it can be block when applied correctly you will notice there are very similar issues with the use of age uke so it will also help with your question kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWLFl5ywgbh1b6s again let me know what you think

ok sensei, after testing your techniques i gotta say, they are quite useful.both the two techniques are quite good .although i have some concerns about the first technique as that require very high level of precision,if even a single mistake is made, opponent punch will surely reach rib cage.also people recoil punches quite fast so it makes it even more difficult to perform.but the second technique is quite good,i loved it and will share that one with my dojo students. i loved the second video about use of blocks to break opponents balance.there are some pretty useful techniques there.i learned a lot. the third video about cross block is quite interesting.i had seen those moves in many katas so i was understanding what you were saying there.although i don't know why i had seen many fight in many competitions i had never seen anyone using cross block any time.this is just one time i saw a guy using cross block to defend an axe kick.i was like...what!!!!!....is that even possible...but he did it...although now i am seeing cross block from a different perspective,so with my advancement in karate,i will find about this block more.. thanks a lot sensei.

I'm glad they have helped you and mostly in making you ask further questions as we all should. You are correct about the issues with the first variation. The version presented is for yellow belt and as such is fundamental not even just basic, you should quite rightly develop it beyond that to deal with the issues you identified if you don't it remains basic forever and there is no growth so for serious students it should develop
