Great workflow breakdown! Thank you! I think I’d make a small grasshopper script that references the center of the section lines and the make 2d lines and then get the difference between points to get a movement vector to automate the alignment process. (more for a big project with lots of sections).

Could you explain what you mmean an by this a bit?
@michaelvollrath3192
@michaelvollrath3192 8 ай бұрын
@@ashuri8184 Sure, essentially you are dealing with two planes. 1 plane is your original section cut, the 2nd plane is the plane that the resulting Make2d lines end up on (typically world XY), if you evaluate/get both of these planes, you can use Orient component in Grasshopper to transform from the world XY planes of the Make2d line output and move those to the Section Cut planes at each location. The Section Cut plane doesn't have to be the destination though. You could move them to be oriented on a layout sheet, positioned "flat" around the overall building like a box with its flaps down, etc. Once you have the planes you can orient however you want... Hope that helps!

I usually make use of the rhino clipping plane tool and link them to my viewports in my layout tabs. It automatically updates, no need for any manual work, no heavy duty make2D commands It does the hatching (one solid color) It shows what's visible with the options shaded/arctic/rendered/technical etc. Even annotations update automagically when I make changes to the annotated objects. Easy export to pdf/dwg/image whatever. This combined with the coming Rhino8 Clipping plane functionalities will take care of all my 2D Sectioning needs. The only thing that I miss in this method is adjusting the hatch style per object and actual clipping plane geometry but that will soon be solved for good ;)

Yup - this is correct.

how do you link the clipping plane to the viewports? and how to you export it to dwg without make2d ?
@TonyJaboney
@TonyJaboney 2 жыл бұрын
@@zoilinar Q1: How does one link clipping plane to viewports. - make sure u have a layout tab with a "detail view" on it. - make sure u have a clipping plane - select the clipping plane and go to the properties tab on the right menu. - where it says "views clipped" there's a drop down menu which by default is on "model views" - Select "layout views" in the drop down menu and check mark the detail views you want to link to the clipping plane Q2: how to export Clipping plane View without make2d - Select the right view in which the clipping plane will be oriented "top/bottom/left/right/perspective/back" (You can create a new viewport tab which is clipped keeping your original viewports unaffected Like "RightSect" Or "Planview") (Drawing the clipping plane in this tab will make it automatically active otherwise you need to select the viewport, go to properties tab and check the right view under the model views tab) - Draw the clipping plane and move it in a different unaffected viewport to where you want the section to be - Do the "print" command - Select "Rhino PDF" as destination - Set size to "custom" - Make the dimensions large enough to contain the section/object/drawing etc. (30000X30000 Cm would do the trick for the building I suppose) - Under "Output type" select "Vector Output" - Under "view and output scale" Set scale 1:1 - Make sure all geometry is contained in the print preview if not under "view and output scale" you can set a window for the area you want to print. (say no to changing the scale) - Press Print Vector PDF files can be imported as Curves and hatches in Rhino with objects retaining layer information. Whilst printing in vector pdf there is not much fine tuning in which curves get exported. This method exports all of the visible geometry in front of the clipping plane in wireframe mode. If you want to go for aesthetically pleasing annotated layouts for documentation or presentation select "raster" pdf. With this function you can export your detail views in all of Rhino's viewport styles (wireframe,shaded,rendered, arctic, etc) These pdfs cannot be imported as DWG files though but are excellent for presentation purposes or to create printable drawings for the builders, council, client, etc. They usually don't need dwg. Just a pdf or piece of paper with some annotations on it are usually plenty to get the information across. These PDFs look vectorized so that they behave like vector drawings when zooming in and such in your pdf viewer of choice but are in fact "rasterized" they import as pictures in rhino. If you need an aesthetically pleasing DWG file of your clipping plane for post processing in illustrator, autocad, lasercutting or something then the workflow in the video is probably the best way to go. But I suspect most will need a quick and easy way to create multiple (clipped) views of a design for annotated drawings and export to PDF.

I mostly use details in layouts looking into model space. Front, top, right, perspective, the usual kind of 4 view layout. I dimension in each detail to the objects (LxWxH) of a cube for example. When using SECTION TOOLS is there anyway NOT to create a bunch of 2d objects and still show a slice through objects like a normal clipping plane. You can set a standard clipping plane to clip layout views (horizontal section through a cube) without creating more 2d objects and without modifying the cube. Can SECTION TOOLS do that? Can a SECTION TOOLS section be used to clip a layout view without creating 2d objects that I have to have a separate layout for?

It feels like it should be possible to use this to make a dynamic plan since a plan is just a section at a different angle but I'm finding it hard to make that happen, am I missing something?

If I recall correctly - you simply draw the section in any elevation view (front, left, right or back) and it will create a horizontal section (which is what a plan is)

Amazing videos thank you so much. Do you think there is a more dynamic workflow for this using grasshopper somehow? a combination of geometry referencing using 'dynamic geometry pipeline' from Human? and intersecting planes with referenced geometry etc? I was trying something like that but the data trees got too complicated for my abilities 😅 - any thoughts?
@DesignGoBrr
@DesignGoBrr 2 жыл бұрын
Of course! BUT (and it's a big BUT) - automating something that is inherently pretty subjective/custom via Grasshopper usually becomes very nasty with really bad user experience in using the script/tool. So there is a bit of a tradeoff that I personally wouldn't want to take.

Umm yea, making those sections in Rhino is quite manual as you frankenstein together multiple make2d's. Section Tools or VisualArq might help with this, but the solution will never be as streamlined as that of Archicad or Revit. That's the price you pay for the flexibility of Rhino
