That's it! You've cemented it! I must have this book. I was feeling doubtful because I thought Hikaru no Go would overrun the DN parts and that the book would be small but you erased those doubts! Thank you, I'll go and buy it now :D By the way, tumblr tried to analyze that Near-Mello-L-Light picture where Light is spreading his arms against the gold of L's symbol. They made great analyses about the white roses and the golden colour (Somber reverence, "I'm thinking of you" for the roses, golden colour being triumph, extravagance, ego, brilliance, light of day (holy light) and splendor of God - curiously this gold colour is pointed at L, not Light) but completely ignored everything else. They looked at the picture mainly from Lawlight shipper's point of view and while I do like that pairing, let me give you a couple of other things as well. Notice how Light is wearing shredded garments and JEANS. Light, whose character was designed to wear only straight pants and formal wear and when the artist deliberately avoided drawing him in jeans, is wearing jeans. Coincidentally jeans are the garment that L preferred over other types of pants. They also look a lot like the jeans L wore what with being airy and slightly yellow-tinted. Light's entire attire is actually very strange. It's casual, a bit sporty and definitely not in Light's character and yet he still wears it. The sleeves of his jacket are singed, as if he held something too hot and the warmth turned to blistering heat, or that he reached (or is about to reach) something he shouldn't touch. Both of these could be allegories for L whom Light held in his arms as he died, and whose place and responsibilities he took but got burned in the end. It's also nice to note that the common clothes aren't in line with the rest of the picture, as if L's holiness is somehow diminishing Light's godhood, bringing him down to something ordinary, someone who wears those kind of clothes. His spread arms cover the entire page, acting as if a line between us and the concept that is behind Light - L. He doesn't see the two people behind him in gray colours but stands in front of the golden plaque that carries the name L, as a concept and a person, though Light is shrouding it from our eyes, because he's now L. But he also doesn't see that his thoughts are overflowing behind him, that we already see L up there. He's shielding the truth from the world and yet the man he had killed is like an image of a deity, an ascending force bathed in white light, behind him. And look at his eyes. That's not the face of someone who's completely content. He's frowning a bit with his eyebrows and mouth as well. Light is now accepting parts on L into him, preparing himself to fool the entire world, and yet shielding us from the real thing, like saying "He, L, is holy". But he can't cover everything and the gray figures of Mello and Near are still as statues, as if from photographs, waiting for their turn. But you should notice how all the splendor is aimed at L and the concept of L, not at Light or the successors though they were all L in a way. All of this is linked through the symbolism behind the chosen colours, roses and gold. Light is clearly saying: "I won over you. I'll carry you, the name, on my shoulders. You, who burned me, I'll bear you. I am thinking of you in reverence and somberly. You are Holy. This name is heavy, it is brilliant and the splendor of extravagance, I'll hide it. I'll live it. I'll become you. I am L (You are L, I remember you). I'll always remember you. You will haunt me from this moment onwards. There's no one but you and me. There are no others, and I have become this, I too will ascend just as you have done in my eyes." Then there's also the fact that the figures of Mello and Near look a bit forlorn, they are bathed in L's brilliant golden colours and white hues. They are almost colourless, they aren't Ls yet. Yet they silently stand behind the plaque, unmoving, as if being Greek statues, classic examples of the future that is shrouded. The heroes that take down gods in their epics. Their story, a gilded opus dictated by the blinding light that L shines down on everyone involved, yet not strong enough to wrench the plaque away from Light. They're tragic heroes that are an example of the future where Light will fall though he now poses as a somber messiah who's probably thinking along the lines of "if only you didn't stand against me, if only we weren't enemies, I would have let you live. Look what you made me do, look what you made of me." His martyrdom is complete.

For the Hikaru no Go part of the book, it's more of the second half of the series. Hikaru no Go has its own art book (which never got translated sadly). It's nice they added magazine covers and light novel art that we American readers would've never seen otherwise

Pretty hard to believe, but I seem to remember reading that they toyed with the idea of making him more like a human before ultimately deciding to keep him really ugly. I forget if it's supposed to be some alternate form or what, though.

This is correct. The man is Ryuk's first form before Obata decided to make Shinigamis more monstrous but also because "no one could be prettier than Light". Having Ryuk be a human would have also urged people to ship him with Light and the series would have taken a turn, and also it would have been "distracting for the female audience" so they decided on the monstrous figure.

Near wasn’t as good as L but he still completed the remaining part of what L left off from. Though he was based more on his charisma because all he really did were deductions and they were much weaker than L’s but Near was really intelligent. I think people liked L more because of his personality more than anything, Near is dull and emotionless... but one of my favourite quotes from Near is “If you give up you are just a loser” which I still dawn on myself when I need it.. Great video and much care.

I didn't ship them at all. Never crossed my mind actually lol From the beginning, I took Light's side. I was glad when L was dead *evil laugh* I think Light was doing pretty good, killing criminals and all. Then, L appeared out of nowhere and Light went out of control to be able to hide his identity. I feel if L hadn't existed Light wouldn't have gone insane... Most people think the opposite but anyway. This is my opinion :)

That's so unfair. Half of this book is about some other characters that most of us don't even know. I want to buy it only for death note, and I have to pay for all of them:( It's so expensive• if there was a different book dedicated only to death note it would cost half of its price.

It's more a collection of the artist's works than it is an actual Death Note art book. But I would say its still worth it. It's absolutely gorgeous and even if the art isn't only Death Note his other works are still just as beautiful in my opinion. Plus I think it's nice to see some of the other series he's worked on in here and see a bit more of the range of art he can do. The price also comes from the presentation of the book, the slip case, the paper quality, the hardback book itself and the large prints that are included as well.
