Thanks, Dave, for the review. I purchased the UP24 a month ago after researching the two, decided on the latter love my jawbone and have zero regrets. The UP24 allows you to calibrate your steps which makes for a more accurate steps recorded. At the end of the day, I would rather it underestimate and I exceed my 10k steps than overestimate. UI for the app makes a huge difference too. No regrets and happy you compared the two. Great job!
@TheSkepticSkwerl10 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the fitbit has no manual, and is very vague, but if you go to the website on a pc, you can do more than the phone app. Calibrating your stride length is also possible in fitbit.
@kcoldani10 жыл бұрын
The UP24 doesn't allow stride adjustments, only distance traveled. So you could get more accurate distances, but the step count will still be wrong. The FB allows you to adjust stride length so both will be accurate.

Pretty good video Dave. I am sure that both devices have their pros and cons I think that the whole idea behind them are not to be perfectly accurate but to get the user to be more active in the healthy lifestyle. One way to measure how accurate they measure steps is to 1. get a count from each device 2. walk and personally count your steps 3. compare the numbers against your own. Not the perfect way but it will give you an idea of which one is better.
@TheSkepticSkwerl10 жыл бұрын
This is unrealistic due to a couple factors. 1. not all stepping is the same as test steps. 2. we all step differently. what i mean by this is that when you walk, you may itch your face, or hold a bottle, or push a cart. all of these will change how the device reacts to steps. a full test is needed, truly counting your steps for a week, and wearing both devices is the best way, but who is gonna count every step.
@DarrenGator10 жыл бұрын
I did say ONE WAY and NOT THE PERFECT. Not too mention it was a suggestion/idea. It is not unrealistic in the simple fact that if you count your steps and one device is far off the count you get a better idea on which is more accurate. Think what you want, better yet you get both devices conduct your own tests and then post a video on KZbin.

Thanks for the review. I have been using the UP24 for seven months and have been thinking about getting their new water proof version. Before doing that, I wanted to compare other devices. I take full advantage of the UP24 and use it log in everything that I eat and drink - plus I manually plug in all of my daily activities. As far as recording steps...I think that it does a decent job recording my steps, but any other activities like biking or when I'm on elliptical I plug those in manually. I asks for the duration of an activity and my level then calculates the calories that I burned. The UP24 comes in 3 different sizes, not just the one size that you indicated. I have been wearing the small band since June and I find to be perfectly comfortable, I don't even notice it. As far as customer service, I have had no problem reaching them on the phone or via email. When I was having problems resetting the band they sent me a replacement for no fee. I also like the fact that my Withings scale, the Sleepio App, HealthyOut App, MyFitnessPal and Equinox gym all interface with the device to some extent.

BTW, about the accuracy of the Jawbone, I just got a Jawbone UP (not the UP 24, but one of the original models that doesn't use Bluetooth). It has a "Timed Mode" thing, which allows you to start and stop a segment. So I went for a walk and manually counted my steps, and then stopped the timed mode. My manual count of steps was 365. The Jawbone app recorded it as 368 steps. Pretty impressive! Especially considering this is the original version, not the new (presumably improved) version. The only thing it got wrong was the distance. (I guess it thought my strides were longer than they were.) I was using a GPS tracking app at the same time, which recorded the distance as 0.12 miles. But the Jawbone app estimated the distance to be 0.16 miles. So I went into Calibrate and changed the 0.16 to 0.12. So it should be able to better estimate my distance in the future.

I've had the UP24 for 6 months now, and I think it is very accurate. I have counted steps and it comes up with the same amount on the app. It also does not count other movements so there is no cheating! As far as comfortability, I think it took a little getting used to at first, but now I barely notice it on my left wrist and wear it all day long. I like it because its smaller than some other trackers and looks more sleek and is less noticeable as a tracker.
@RikiSmiley10 жыл бұрын
FitBit Flex At first I was super happy with it when I bought it the 22nd of February 2014. There were some bits that did not seem okay, but I accepted them. For example: One has to put the Flex on the non-dominant wrist/hand because it is too sensitive and would add every single move you made with your arm, yet you have to mark it as dominant wrist/hand in your online settings. Sometimes, accidentally the sleep mode would activate on it's own. The good thing is that you can feel it vibrate then or you can notice if only 2 lights went on when tapping on it (I would check it a couple of times during the day to make sure). You can fix that in your log by just deleting that "sleeping" period. When you do go to sleep at night, you have to tap it 5 times VERY hard and also to "wake' it up in the morning. Another problem was that one has difficulty linking with FaceBook friends, it might work the first time and maybe not later. The MAYOR problem was when it started having problems with the charger by the end of April and then went completely dead on the 3rd of May… It only lived 10 weeks. I followed all the solutions given by the FitBit Team and also those given by some people in the Community Forum, yet nothing worked. There are LOTS of people having this problem and, for the moment, FitBit has confessed that they do not have a timeline with a solution to this problem: "Fitbit is aware of this issue and they are working towards a more substantial fix; however there isn't a timeframe of when the issue will be resolved." The only thing they are able to do for the moment is to send you a replacement, with the hope that one will be faultless. This is an expensive gadget, so we hope they are able to find a fix soon. The Force had to be recalled and taken out of the market because of the rash problems that many people had and which FitBit had said not many were affected. If so, then did they have to recall it out of the market? Then now the Flex is having this charger problem. I would not be surprised if they have to recall it soon. See more in this forum page: community.fitbit.com/t5/Flex/battery-not-charging/td-p/56261 I have checked the Amazon reviews and noticed that this charger problem has been around even since last summer 2013! :-O

I love my Fitbit Flex and I've been using it for almost a year now but what you said about the Flex being more accurate because you 'trust' it ruined the whole video for me. It would have been great if you put both devices on, went for a walk counting your steps manually then had a look at which was more accurate.
@geekanoids10 жыл бұрын
That is what I did, both were worn and then I showed the resulting figures in the apps.
@MichaelPlastow10 жыл бұрын
Geekanoids But you didn't count your steps manually, just because you had the fitbit a year and you 'trust' it, it maybe be doubling your actual steps! The only real way to test this particular thing is to have a few different 'stepometers' and find the trend of what they all say (Either that or literally count every step you do all day!) Great review anyway. Still torn between the two though! I want a band mainly for sleep info, I hear the UP24 tracks when you're in light sleep and if near you're alarm time it will wake you then, rather than disturb you in deep sleep. Does the Fitbit have this function? Kind regards Mike
@RichardLartey10 жыл бұрын
Michael Plastow The flex doesn't have that feature, but it will wake you up by vibrating, great for when there are other people sleeping in the room and you don't want to wake them up.
@TheSkepticSkwerl10 жыл бұрын
there are many videos on this, and reviews, it tends to be the fitbit who is accurate more often then not. your life style determines the type of steps you make, and how your arm swings. a cart doesnt swing your arm, so it isn't about perfection, but about closeness. awareness. if you want true pedometer capabilities, a nike + or garmin with gps capabilities are the best options.

George Mitchell Sorry, I no longer have the UP.
@gsmitchell10 жыл бұрын
Dave, ahhhh! Good to know, thanks! My friends recommend the Fitbit, but I was leaning toward the Up. I find that one of the major influencers for me is how many software programs it connects to. Jawbone seems to be pushing that pretty hard ( connect with the Nest? Cool! ), but had no idea that their basic step counter might be off. That was critical, so thanks for pointing that out!
@annamolly708110 жыл бұрын
George Mitchell It isn`t off. Its more accurate. 4 thousand steps on Fitbit came from moving your hand even when your seating on the chair and waving to your friends. Up24 only reacts to the specific movement, actual step, when your leg meats the ground and sends your hand a specific subtraction of muscles. I worn Samsung fit and Up24 and they only had 200 steps difference while Fitbit thrown me off for a few thousands.
@gsmitchell10 жыл бұрын
Anna Molly Wow, that makes the Fitbit sound really poorly designed. Thanks for the explanation!

Great review.The massive difference in the number of steps reported by both devices proves my concerns that these devices rarely log the data with any level of accuracy. Which is no surprise given how tiny they are and therefore how limited their internal technology must be.

I've had the Fitbit Flex and the UP now. I switched because of the issues I had with the flex. I will admit their Fitbit customer service is good, however, I've had 2 units since Christmas and both went out within a month. I'm just beginning to get the UP in use (the instruction manual was no help) and comfort wise, they are very similar. I do agree with the earlier comment about the swinging of arms, but I also wore while cutting the yard and amassed a whopping 10,000 steps while doing so. I guess the gist of this is that these are not going to be 100% accurate, but as long as the product motivates us to work out is the goal of the product

nice review. I've been using pedometers all brands for many years and recently started looking at activity monitors like these, what I found is the 'motion sensor' is too sensitive in some of these gadgets like the fitbit flex, thats why you have found it counted double the steps compared to say the jawbone UP24 although not as good looking or perhaps comfortable is far more accurate as the its been manufactured to not count movements such as shaking your arms without feet moving as steps. One test you can do is physically count 200 steps manually with these plus a reliable pedometer like an Omron and you'll see what the true steps are.

Midnightbazar, I agree with you. I bought the FitBit Flex and set it up right before bedtime. Imagine my surprise when I woke up the next day to find that I had made 1,067 steps during my sleep! Also, I just use Jog Tracker to track how far I walk, and I find it to be pretty accurate (uses GPS). So another test could be to see how far FitBit is saying you walked compared to how far Jog Tracker says (unless FitBit uses GPS too, in which case they'd be the same of course).

Did the test today. Strapped both on the same wrist and took a walk, 437 steps. Fitbit recorded 492, UP24 recorded 520. You can adjust your stride measurement with the Fitbit, not the UP24. I also like the fit of the FB better, and it's $50 cheaper. Keeping the FB.

I find my Up24 doesn't track steps when I'm not swinging my arm somewhat. Not sure why you had problems with Jawbones customer service unless it is because you are in the UK. They have been great for me though they do not work on the weekends. I have both called Jawbone and e-mailed them. The phone call went almost immediately to a customer service rep. (no hold time) and e-mail I got a reply within 24 hours in most cases 2 or 4 hours. The exception was on an e-mail Saturday then I got the reply on Monday. I have had my UP for nearly a year now and do agree occasional the App does freeze, but deleting it from my phone and reloading it usually solves the problem without loss of data. You do have to remember your account UP login info. I even lost the cap to my UP connector (my fault) recently and Jawbone is sent complimentary replacement via FedEx.

The Fitbit clasp is VERY awkward to attach on the wrist and unreliable. I have lost the Fitbit twice. The Jawbone is much easier to put on and seems to stay on the wrist more reliably. There is continuing discrepancy between the two in measurement of steps. I've worn both simultaneously on the same wrist for weeks. I'd like to know which one is REALLY the most accurate.

I have heard that the fitbit records hand movement as steps. Could this be why the fitbit recorded twice as many steps as the jawbone? If so, it may be just the opposite (and the jawbone may be more accurate). I'm shopping for a gift. But still undecided.

Ignoring the number of steps difference, I'm more concerned about how much calories it says you burned. You would need to work out the whole day to burn more than 2000 calories, it surely can't be done just by walking :)

more than likely it is accounting for basal metabolic rate as well.

Yes it can be doe by walking but you have to walk a hell of a long way for a long time. Anyway, thats not what the number of calories burned is showing. If he set it up properly it's also tracking his BMI and the majority of those calories are from his bmi.

breathing burns calories, digesting food does too, it counts all this in a big average plus your activity.
@MelkhorX10 жыл бұрын
It's a commonly known fact that you burn calories all day, even when sitting. Your body is always burning calories at a slow rate. Calories are energy, and you need energy to survive. Just like a car left running, your body is burning the gas (calories) all day. When you exercise frequently, it speeds up your metabolism. A faster metabolism means more calories burned at rest. Meaning if you're weight training and getting your cardio in, you burn a pretty impressive amount of calories sitting at home and watching TV. So to burn 2,000 calories you most certainly do not need to work out all day. Most fitness professionals suggest 30 minutes of active exercise a day. If you want to be burning more calories, make sure you also do weight training and cardio to speed up that metabolism. Hope that helps.

Dave, please check out this comparison of the accuracy of various fitness bands: www.imore.com/ultimate-fitness-tracker-comparison-fitbit-flex-vs-jawbone-up24-vs-nike-fuelband-se-vs-garmin ...I had not seen it from your perspective before, because when faced with the two, I can see how it would be hard to know which to trust. It seems to me that the Jawbone is more consistent with other various fitness trackers, though, and that the Fitbit consistently overestimates your workload (it errs on the side of fitness, the incentive for this programming is obvious). That said, fitness tracking is ultimately about longevity and not calorie counts...what I mean is that the number of steps/calories/bratwurts you do is subjective. Everyone's metabolic rate is different, calories in don't always equal the calories your device says are "out", and what really matters is finding something that is reliable and works for you. I was going to get the UP24 but your review makes me favor the Fitty a little. I might end up waiting until a new one comes out in a month or two, though ;P

I think the issue with lost data is something to do with the phone not the wrist device, You are logged in and all your data is backed up online. Also you never mentioned all the cool tips you get form Jawbone based on historical data like comparisons to sleep quality, sleep times and activity. As you can see I'm defending the Jawbone. Fitbit flex is CRAP GARBAGE! Took me 5 hours if reading posts on the internet to realize that it won't even sync with my ipad OR iPhone because it doesn't give you any instructions. Clasp fell off in my sleep two times last night. Bracelet fell off today and now it is gone. I had it for two days. You'd think a bracelet designed to track activity and exercise wouldn't fall of in your sleep.
