With a solar powered chain saw, wood heat and wood cooking, you can be self-sufficient in your off-grid homestead.
We test the feasibility of charging a battery powered chain saw to make fire wood. It turns out that just a few minutes of sunshine in the summer can make weeks of firewood for winter heating.

I got one of those Ego saws in 16" and it's not for the woodyard, but with a couple batteries you can easily drop and buck up a good sized tree. I honestly think that his battery in the video is failing. I do a lot more work with mine, and they're only 7.5AH. I do have a big Stihl for falling and bucking the bigger stuff, but for anything under about a foot, I'm reaching for my electric saw.

When are you guys going to get a milk cow 🐄 and some steers . With my jersey nurse cow I raise 9 calfs off one cow . I filled my 4 freezers full of beef then I just raised 7 of the calfs to 700 pounds then took to auction and made close to 12000 off all the calfs. So one nurse cow can raise 3 calfs at a time for 4 months then I go get more hoilstien Angus crosses from a dairy for 125 bucks a piece at 2 weeks old. Now 14 months later still getting 3.5 gallons of milk a day. When she is fresh I get 6 gallons a day. Think how much cheese, butter, ice cream and sour cream you could make.

First of all I love your family and your vest for life! To determine a "close" quick height of a tree is to take a pencil and place the point on the top of the tree and then put your thumb on the base of tree on the pencil, then rotate 90 degrees so that your thumb position is still at the base the point points to where the top of the tree will be. It works within a foot or so.

Here is the solar plan I have based on a 12 volt system. I have a 120vac remington electric chain saw that after many years of use, pooped out. I am taking the motor out to match in size and rpm/torque swap out with a 12vdc motor. Will get it on amazon. The idea is using a folding metal laundry basket with a 500W 12v solar panel and two auto batteries that have min 450 amp hours of use in them and heavy duty cordage for hook up so I can go anywhere and cut any size tree and also not worry about hot batteries (that could blow up) and the auto batteries are easy to recondition. Those lithium ion batteries are dangerous when heated up from heavy use. My motor on the saw will not even come close to drawing what a starter motor does. I love your idea, but I find thinking outside the box on what my power tools shall be is critical for off grid living. Also, just to be fair, I would not have used power tools to limb the tree. Hand saws and an ax to do the limbing and those limbs are fire starters and rocket stove wood (espcially during summer cooking and canning).

Nice job on dropping that tree right where it needed to fall! As always, I enjoy watching your family work together, and learn, as well. The "scientific experiments" that you come up with makes working a lot more enjoyable for you all, and it's very interesting for us viewers, too. My only heat source is my wood stove, and I've been contemplating getting a rechargeable Dewalt saw. Our wood, here, is a lot harder wood than your evergreens there, so I wouldn't use the Dewalt as my main saw. Just for cutting the smaller limbs, and trim work. Still, it would be a welcome change to being more quiet than a gas saw, and would be quick and easy for small jobs. Thanks for another great video, and keep them coming as you have time. I hope that poor goat got some relief! 😆 God bless your family.

Fun video. Lottsa math. So you proved that an electric chainsaw that was corded ran to the house and using the house batteries would be more efficient. Once that battery gets hot it looses efficiency and each charge\Use there after. Desalt engineers should chime in and defend their battery math. Dull chain no oil cooling the chain and bar. Ya to do firewood on the cheap with solar sounds great. Also real cold diminishes battery worth for cutting in winter. Solar is renewable gas is reliable. Love your hunting fishing videos. Cheers

Just today I had my brother and his mate over to get some firewood. I'm in Australia and have quite a few dead trees on my property. Grid electricity here too. I don't burn wood for any reason, not heating or cooking. My brother and his mate have the habit to light a fire outdoors every day to sit around. My brother has a small economical fire but his mate loves to burn a huge fire so he requires loads more timber. I'm glad to get rid of the dead trees because they randomly drop branches that can be dangerous. I wouldn't waste my time and energy to cut them down and clean up the timber just for a recreational fire. I actually like that dead wood on the ground is carbon sequestered into the soil. It makes sense that you would consider energy spent for energy recovered living off grid. You guy's are adorable, and it's encouraging to see how everyone feels they have a value to each other in a simple but effective way. Life with meaning, just how it should be.

I have also transitioned alot of my tools from gas powered to electric because we have solar on our house as well. This includes two chainsaws, a weedeater, various power tools, and a tiller. As having done alot of testing with ALOT of different batteries, I can tell you the Dewalt batteries are by far the worst we have tested. They overheat way to easy and where the slowest to charge, and seemed to start loosing their charge the earliest. The best we've worked with are Greenworks (for our large stuff like chainsaws and tillers) and Kobalt for our small stuff (like power tools). Hope that helps!

I wonder if you get more milage out of you battery if you "limbed" the tree first and then started cutting "rounds" at the top and worked down to the base? Might be more efficient use. The battery powered saw certainly would save you loads of gas if it were used mostly as a "limber" as well. Their is a "best" process lurking in there somewhere.

It insulted me as I spent 20 years studying science, language, foreign culture and independent living. You won't find many Europeans writing such drivel as these commenters even though English is their second or even third language. Come on Jeff, find someone who can help you sort out the schooling situation instead of all these losers who can only say "awesome dog bless you etc". Or are you quite happy to live in dream world like the weapons factory one country south of your home? Or we cast language, grammar and science in the " trash " and make it up as we go? Sorry for pointing out the negative points, but you can't tell the kids that santa will bring them presents all their lives. At some point you have to get a solid foundation, and that is neither in this blessing nonsense, nor in the foot, pound, horse rubbish from 200 years ago. A good kick in the pants is my intention, because I admire you in all that you do EXCEPT teach science. Take it positively and say "ill show that know it all" and then whack me with some kilogrammes, mètres and Newtons. Go on, I dare you to start. It's not impossible. Good night.

Some say once when you carry it in but unless you're running the 100 with it, I never got warm from carrying it in. I mostly got cold when I carried it in.

So, 17.4 days is basically 2.5 weeks, which makes about 21 trees a year. That means you'll go through roughly 1400 trees before any trees you plant today reach maturity in 66 years. 30 trees a year-for gasification and such-would put you close 2k trees consumed. That's about an acre of spruce or fir, or two acres of other types. So consider replanting what you take/prefer, especially if you don't have huge … tracts of land. 🤓

I strive to make good things even better and complicated projects smooth like store-bought chocolate milk. Yum So, I use SOLAR 99% for heat and 1% for electricity by applying a much simpler methodology. I use solar Heat for: Cooking Domestic hot water Making diesel oil and gasoline from plastic and Making lump charcoal. How? Not here (at least in its entirety). Basically, that 1% is PV that drives air compressors feeding an air baytery.

I would have measured the cubic feet of the wood. A cord of wood is 128 cubic feet. One cord of wood gives approximitly 20 million btu's. So, 156K btu's of heat per cubic foot of wood. So if you had 30 cubic feet of wood you would get 4.68 million btu's of heat for your 20 hrs of solar power.

It is nice to see a family work together and help each other as a result of both parents being constantly present with their kids. Also, teaching your children direct hands-on skills that are directly beneficial to living independently must really benefit child learning rather than sitting in a classroom being taught stuff that does not appear immediately beneficial really helps children to grow up to be successful adults. Kids are not taught in school the knowledge of how to build the very things they take for granted and not having the direct knowledge of how to build shelter, understand electrical, grow food/hunt/cook and many basic things people do not have to understand unless basic infrastructure fails.

If you were using 18 or 20V cordless chainsaw, you could use a combination of deep cycle lead acid batteries installed in a wheeled tool tote with a cord to get more run time and to be able to use the chainsaw in cold weather. But accumulating and prepping a stock pile before cold weather might solve the cold weather sawing issue. Or build a battery vest under your coat with extra tool batteries in parallel. I would go for walks in winter and have no issues with my cell phone because it is next to my body. Another big issue about off grid generation is how to convert efficiently enough some of the thermal energy from burning wood to run so.e heat engi e or stirlimg engine ti drive a generator. Also; methanol or wood alcohol was once made by distilling vapors of wood. How hard would it be to distill methanol from wood and modify a gasoline ge erator to run off it. I was concerned that your attempts of trying to run your generator with woodgas was going to ruin your generator due to the hard to remove tar from the woodgas.

there is an efficiency loss, when you go from battery to battery you are only like 20% efficiency. but that is ok. gas engine is only like 10% efficiency lol. basically your 19.5 minutes of solar is more likely 6-8hours because of efficiency loss from panel to battery to another charger then battery again. A LOT of loss. but still all free

What if you cut the tree down in a burbot bikini? Would that increase or decrease the megajoules required or would the solar power just give you a sun burn?

The hot battery is the problem with electric chainsaw, and why I’d probably stick with gasoline. On your electric chainsaw, do you still use bar oil?
@ironmayhew

When you first put that battery on charge, you see the yellow light beside the flashing red light. That means the battery is too hot to charge. So it will cool down and then start charging. So until that yellow light turns of you weren't actually charging. You should get the 20 volt dewalt chainsaw. And use it for the branches and small stuff. I have one, and it works great. And you already own a lot of 20v batteries.

Your math seems interesting ........ but I'd like to suggest you need to take into account what it takes to produce the joules of energy required to support the manpower/girlpower in this equation, including food, lodging, and clothing requirements etc. I am curious to see what your results add up to. Great video!

That is great info! Great segment! How does gas compare? How long does it take to cut a tree by hand per Calorie compared? Idk. Just thought that wood 🪵 Be a good comparison. 🤓

You forgot the 69years of growth in your calculation. Then again, it looks like you have unlimited trees to choose from. So nevermind that 😁 I've watched lots of hours of your show, and I love to see how you manage to do all the things you do. I'm a subscriber for sure

Love that you took to paper. Was with your train of thought the whole way because you were writing it down. Thanks for the quick and informative lesson. Could the goat have gotten any louder? Now there's a question for the next time. Thanks for the video with most of your very beautiful girls.

The calculations are fine on paper but it took you over 2 hours the charge ONE battery taking up around 1,000 watts during that time of constant drain from the solar system and you said your recharged batteries only last about 6 minutes of power each.

please re-read the tree falling manual. I am sure it says to take a third or less of the diameter for the 'falling carve' and a and about two thirds minus the 6 by four left standing to guide the fall as a hinge, from the backside. Don't know the propper terms, since I am not a natural speaker... but also a carpenter, if that helps convincing. Still a great Video though!

Is Abagail 18 yet? Because I couldn't help but notice that the shorts and chainsaw chaps outfit isn't a bad look for her at all. But I hesitate to mention it if Abby isn't an official adult yet. (pause) DOH! I guess I mentioned it anyway. Abby is such a cutie pie. But then again so are all the Burkinshaw females. Take care. sincerely, Dean O. :-I

That's pretty cool, except the math. You forgot how much you eat and your man and chillins hours and you forgot that mega jewels are probably King Kong's testies, so language gap. You might be able to get some of those silky saws free from the company for demoing them, at least you used to.

For the record, You are talking a cord of firewood 4 ft x 8 ft x 18 inches (1.5 ft.) (which is a borrowed term). A timber cord is 4 ft x 4 ft x 8 ft.

Would have been nice if you touched on the subject that even though wood to cook and heat is a renewable resource, it is far from sustainable. 60yrs to grow a 2 week supply of firewood is kinda heartbreaking if you think about it.

And if you to keep any limb 2" and bigger bigger say cut them up in the same link and stack them up eventually you would have a full 3rd of a court on that tree but I always keep anything at least 2" because they can stuff into a Woodburn stove and you got wood that you're burning and you're not throwing out on the ground rod or burning in a pile out on the ground you're burning it and you're would stop that's plenty of BTU's

If you used micro inverters clouds do not shut down the system.. converting dc to ac at the end in really bad and inefficient.. about 30% loss..plus your panels are flat and not aimed at the sun.. You guys need about 30 more panels too.. plus never charge battery when it’s hot.. you lose a lot plus the battery life is reduced much.. you are burning up batteries..

But the metals and plastics used in the chainsaw also used oil for mining and manufacturing. So ultimately you need a chainsaw that lasts 50-60 years.
