Grow Wormwood and use it for chicken bedding and garlic skins work as well. This idea was given to me by an old man how swore by it. I had success with clearing up mites.👍

What breed is your adorable pup? Another idea for the green tomatoes.....add to fermented chow chow or make green tomato salsa. The Art & Bri KZbin channel is running a fermenting course currently-took the Beta course....WONDERFUL. Demystified the whole process and very motivating to ferment all kinds of veges!

That's interesting about the chickens losing feathers. We had a similar problem in the spring, we eventually put it down to a bale of straw that wasn't organically produced and likely had residues. It only affected a few hens on their backs, and the underside of the cockerel. Like you we have a well ventilated tractor (different design, our has to be very heavy for the winds) and have never seen mites at all.
@TapoNothFarm
@TapoNothFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we're still a bit confused, though the feathers are growing back well now so hopefully they are on the mend.
@jay0741

The cause isn't mites. The rooster has been doing his job! So much so he has worn off the ladies' feathers. It happens every spring. No need to worry.

Hey! Another good film. Mites! The chickens would ALWAYS need a dust bath. Something that is not always there with chick-shaws. Works in the same way as diatomaceous earth. They need a dry area of dirt at all times and mites will be minimal. Cheers.

Thanks so much for the kind words. Yes, we would love to incorporate more aerials/ designs/maps. We are using our drone more and more but you're not the first person to suggest a map or something to feature in the vlogs to be able to help viewers get a better understanding of the lay of the land so we plan to put together something but think we will wait until spring for that.

There's something very satisfying about pulling everything out and giving it a good tidy. I've been doing the same today while we've had a rare sunny day. I've left the greenhouse tomatoes to see if anymore ripen as we're not due a frost any time soon and hung a few bush tomatoes up too, they're packed full of green ones. They spend all summer growing and we spend the last few weeks willing them to ripen :D

Only recently come to your channel via Liz O page. I think. Im moving soon and will be having a 1/5 acre veg plot. Including a large poly tunnel. Unfortunately due to very high arsenic in the soil over 30% ( in cornwall near redruth) i’ll have to grow everything in raised beds and containers unless flowers. Only got 3.5acres in total, which will be a green camp site in the summer months. For 10-15 pitches. So a different set up to you. hope to sell a few bit of produce to neighbours. Hoping to buy extra land if i can or at least rent it.

Sure; some wood is better than others but burn what ever works for you. All wood when properly dried will burn and I have never seen a cold flame yet. Its nice to be able to visit Scotland and your farm. I was wondering what your growing zone is as compared to US growing zones?

@@TapoNothFarm Your growing Season sounds similar to ours. We live at 1650 ft in elevation in the central Adirondack Mts of Norther New York State. We really can't plant out side of a low tunnel until June 1st because of late frost risk and it takes forever for our soil to warm up in the spring.

What about buying a cheap child's bike for the wheels for your chicken thingy?😄 Or would that not work? How is your back, James? Rosa...you petting the cat made me smile...love cats. I love your new goats....they seem very gentle, calm. We're on a bit over an acre & we have to go with Dwarf Nigerian goats (when we get ready to purchase a few) but I would be interested in the goats you & James have acquired recently. Farm looking good. Wishing you both well & safe. 😊

That's a great system that you're doing with your geese and managing the future silvopasture. We've been playing with something very similar on our farm how frequently are you moving your geese and how much space are you working with for a paddock?
@TapoNothFarm
@TapoNothFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Morgan! Yeah, it's working out well. The main silvopasture area has five 8m x 30m grazing strips between the rows of timber/fodder trees. Depending on grass growth etc the geese are moved on after 3-7 days (only 6 geese!), that's in combination with the goats grazing the same are a few days before the geese go on. We have other areas of agroforestry grazing for them (as you've seen in the video) which are all different sizes (our farm is so up and down and here and there that we haven't had the opportunity to design grazing areas of similar sizes, just had to work with what we have). They do work very well on grass below and between trees. We have an area of nut trees with 6 m wide x 30m long grazing strips as well that the geese often over winter in, as well as areas of willow coppice. Thanks for stopping by, hope all is well with you guys!

Hi! We are mostly drying willow for hay but also ash, alder, birch, hazel....pretty much anything we have in abundance. We really didn't get enough bundled up and stored though (next year!). On the whole we bundle the cut branches together tied up with string and store under cover, out of the rain. Good point, a good power wash always helps. Thanks!

Hi from paris, Why dont you just leave the plants where they are until you can get no more food fromthem nd then put the hes in the tunnel?
@TapoNothFarm
@TapoNothFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Monica - sometimes we do that, but in this case you may have noticed the courgettes were growing through landscape fabric, which we need to remove first as the chickens would destroy the woven plastic. Also, in our experience, the chickens aren't that interested in courgette plants so it's more beneficial to us to make the plants into compost. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

My hens have had quite a heavy moult this year. They were pecking each others back feathers out for protein. Once I'd upped their protein they have refeathered beautifully. Could this be what is happening with yours?
@TapoNothFarm
@TapoNothFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe? We first thought it was damage from the cockerels, but we've now only one rooster and he's not that 'active' so have ruled that out. Thanks for your thoughts.

you already have goats, why need the geese? are those Embden geese, and do you need to clip their wings to prevent them from flying away?
@TapoNothFarm
@TapoNothFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Well, like I said in the video, the geese fill a niche that the goats don't - they can graze areas of grass in delicate places, in-between trees etc that the goats can't go to (because the goats will eat the trees). They are also very good within the market garden, again where the goats or sheep can't go. Yes that's right, Embdens. We haven't clipped their wings and haven't had too many escapes! Thanks for watching.
