Part of the complex is not just dug into a steep rock, but dug by ONE PERSON from above (where the light hole is seen now at 2:34 min). The entire hall with columns is dug by him throughout his life and his sister was supplying him by bread and water through the same hole by ropes By the way: the columns are not built to support the roof, but are the leftover parts of primary rock This all is about the ancient (dug) part. Later on a church has been built attached to that part. You see the corridor connecting that dug and built parts in the film.
