I love the character of the lines The Tjanting in the print. Sometimes sharp, some fuzzy. Like the lines are somewhat 3D here and there. From experience I know that working with a Tjanting is not easy without getting splatters. I worked with Batikwax on fabric using potatostamps and brushes . Great invention Mark, beautiful prints !! Thanks for the video.

You inspire so many to just see what will happen without worrying about perfection, even though you do pretty much accomplish fantastic end results in your artistic explorations. I believe that you have practiced and explored so much in your creativity that you do make it look easy, however, these videos really show that your experiment today has thousands of hours/years in the making to produce your art now. I recently learned that you can apply a very small amount of diluted dish soap to your plate and it will keep thin water-based mediums from breaking into little bubble-blobs... (They were printing with water colours!)
@emilyrosenzweig99462 жыл бұрын
Oooooh can you say more? Apply it how? With fingers? A brush? Do you let it dry then?
@afasimpaur2 жыл бұрын
@@emilyrosenzweig9946 the artist mixed a drop of dish soap into the colour on her palette at one point... At another she put a couple of drops directly onto the plate. She wasn't using a brayer but I imagine that you could... She seemed to be using watercolour specifically for the more painterly effect. Since soap is to reduces the surface tension of water, it makes sense that it would have a useful effect on water-based media. I suspect that a little goes a long way. I look forward to experimenting with the technique.

Hello loving and being inspired by your work. I'm a big fan of the Gelli Plate and experimenting with it. Can I use Oil Pastel as opposed to Crayons with plate? Thank you Tracey
@yeatesmakes2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tracey, oil pastel work really well as a resist on gel plate but, of course, they are a bit tricky to control for really fine lines and details.
@Xenopticon2 жыл бұрын
Great idea! - How was the durability of the wax? Was cracking a problem? Did any start to flake off? Absorbency seems to be the key to these resist techniques (including laser print/photocopy transfers) working over a number of repetitions. It's not likely the resist area that wears out so quickly, but the fact that the background area-the area that attracts and removes the acrylic paint-gets coated with acrylic paint and ceases being absorbent or attractive to more paint. This is another time light sponging between prints might extend the life of the subtractive wax plate. This might be especially true if you could think of a way of making the base substrate of the plate more durable, while providing the necessary absorbancy. Gesso, maybe? Clear gesso? Watercolor ground? I've never worked with a tjanting. But if I recall correctly, the tool is built the way it is-with the reservoir “up handle” of the spout-for the purpose of letting you tilt it back (ie, nozzle higher, handle lower) in order to halt the flow of wax. Don't know if this is practical for the type of drawing you do, or how much practice is required to get it to function properly. But I'm curious to know how well this works, and whether the catch paper is still necessary if you handle the tjanting this way. ...Or was this already what you were doing? Masking tape cleanup-Why have I not thought of using this to refine a gel plate image?!?!?! I use packing tape to clean up my work surfaces and palettes and even a dirty gel plate, all the time. Small thing, but thanks for showing this! There are ways in which I really like the final, large print. I think the problem with it is that the newspaper's a single, large piece, with a semi-regular, very recognizable pattern. It ends up dominating. For all that your wax lines are thicker and the application looser than usual, in this drawing, those lines (and the colors of your painted fills) retain a certain delicacy or sensitivity, which is easily overwhelmed. If you were to collage over the newspaper with other pieces, veil parts with deli paper, and/or distress and decollage some of it, I think that the overall piece could still work very, very well. In future, it also might make a difference, on that kind of substrate, to use a darker, heavier color for the line work, to help it compete with the assertiveness of the background. In any case, the drawing/painting, and resulting print of those areas, are wonderful. I think maybe they just need to stand out more. The colors you've chosen may actually be more subtle than the yellowed newsprint, itself, and are definitely more subtle than the [relatively] harsh, hard, geometric swaths of text. Once again, excellent exploration and development of techniques, for all of us to benefit from. Thanks for sharing your work and process so generously!

That’s just gorgeous. I have to confess though, call me strange, but I loved the second drawing as you were showing us where’d you’d batiked.
