Cool. Yes you can get some really interesting tones if you blend parts of the charcoal out, a little tip, if you rub some charcoal onto a separate piece of paper to produce charcoal dust, you can apply that to the transfer paper with a blending stick thing or an earbud, might be known to you as a que tip?? Anyway you can achieve some lovely soft tones to add dynamic range to your image. Let me know how you get on!

Nice self portraits! I have used this technique on the gel plate. Vellum works if you don't have tracing paper. Parchment paper baking liners work, but that gets the characteristic long, warped lines when it contacts the plate...which is a look that might work well for you, depending on your subject. I haven't tried waxed paper or freezer paper with charcoal, but for masks and stencils, of course. I imagine the charcoal would release from the latter two most effectively onto the gel plate. I will have to try it with my vine charcoal! Welcome to the bright-shiny world of KZbin Tutorials!

My pleasure. Hope it works out for you. I have some more videos on my channel where I combine this process with soft pastel pencil and more complex acrylic painting, check it out if you’re interested.

Loving this, as for an illustrator. Going to give it ago. I had a challenging time with the zine and laser prints but as you said these are original works of art. I have subscribed. Thank you for the inspiration!

Great idea to use charcoal. Will try that. I couldn't get a laser print to transfer at all until I double printed my images. It's because newer printers are more economical with the toner apparently that you need to print on same paper twice.

I tried double printing but my printer always shifts the paper slightly the 2nd time so I never get a clean print 😭
