FINALLY! I stumbled onto your tutorial about DRY climate. I too live in AZ and have run into limitations because of the dryness. THANK YOU for this. Sometimes I have added some Golden acrylic glazing liquid which helps but that is one addl step....and.. I love how it can preserve the whites!
@ShelCPaperOcotilloStudio4 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful Mary :) Yes, the climate is tricky. I have used glazing medium too but it makes the colors transparent (what it is designed to do LOL) and also extender. I just prefer to go with creamier paints with less filler and that really helps.

I love it - pushing the envelope - making Gel printing a real art form . I've found that many of the YT videos are OK but the artists sometimes have a limited understanding of how colors work together or conflict with each other or the techniques are limited to stamps / stencils and result in naive paintings. This is all fine and art is for everyone but looking for more sophisticated results requires exploration ... and you've done that. Thanks for taking us "where no man has gone before" and pushing the envelope of what is posssible.

This is an interesting technique, Shel. Thank you for sharing! I had quite a bit of Sargent art acrylic paint which I purchased when I thought I was going to do acrylic pouring. Initially, I was "distressed" when I found the paint broke apart on the plate, but then quickly noticed these paints were naturally creating that interesting grunge /distressed -type look. You can then layer (or not) anything you want on top of it, similar to the baby powder technique. :-)

It stays exactly as it is. The powder is only acting as a resist to the paint...causing it to not get deposited in certain areas. Any powder that gets trapped on the print is sealed inside the plastics of the acrylic paint.

So glad I found you and your technique from Pinterest! Your voice and your mannerisms are perfect for me, cheerful and good information, not empty chatter...so I subscribed! I live in NM and also have the dry climate. I did a dumb thing and let an acrylic paint pattern dry on my gel plate thinking I ‘d go back and finish but never did. Would you have any suggestions on what to do with this situation? Thanks so much, Diana ☺️
@ShelCPaperOcotilloStudio4 жыл бұрын
Hi Diana :) Welcome to my little channel! You can apply a thin brayered layer of acrylic paint over the dried paint on your plate and with a little burnishing it should pull up. You might need to do it a couple times. Just make sure the layer is almost see through and that you press the paper down well. If that fails, you can use baby oil to clean and condition your plate. Also, hand sanitizer cleans it pretty well too..but after that I use the baby oil.

I have dried my prints, but it’s hard creating crusty bits on the gel plate, cuz I have to wait so long and don’t have patience either! Blow dryer on cool on the plate too, I guess. Definitely now have a use for baby powder, besides dusty a paper before embossing. Fun prints.
@HiddenValor8216 жыл бұрын
I've tried using a blow dryer on cool, but it was still too warm and damaged my plate a little bit, so I decided to stop doing that. Instead I got a tiny desktop fan that I keep next to my plate and turn it on when I want to dry a layer more quickly. Hope that helps.

HiddenValor821, great idea using a fan. I know, I have a desk fan...somewhere! Now, I have to find it because not only does the summer humidity, along the Maine coast, make me uncomfortable, I have been not really happy with using a small heat blower, and my hair dryer is too big and clumsy to use at my art table. Thanks for the suggestion. Reminder to self... find fan!😎🌸

Purple prints ftw! =) Loving what you did here. I went to click on that link for 12x12, as I am thinking about getting a bigger one (I have an 8 x 10.) It lists the item/price only for prime members. It threw me as I have never seen that before. They want 10 more for non prime. So I might have to shop around. But I will be trying that large deli paper you linked. I only have 10x10 deli paper, so I like that one. Plus, I recently placed an order for some Poscas and small brayer and clicked through your links. Though I ended up getting different set of Poscas (more markers,) I am hoping you wind up with some credit for the link through and the brayer, etc. =) Love what you do, and love supporting other artists. I am wondering if you sprinkled the powder with your hands in patterns, how it would come out. Also, was thinking it might be cool to try some powder in some sort of spout item, like a cake decorating tube-thing? To give you some interesting shapes. I bet you would draw/design nice ones with it. =) Anyway, I hope you keep doing more gel print videos. Those and your paper-piecing are my favs. I might even break out my gel plate for a couple videos soon on my channel. Watching you gellin is always contagious! =) That copper one would look so pretty in some fall theme stuff. Looking forward to fall art everywhere. Thanks for sharing Shel! I really want to try this - would cornflour work, or would it run the risk, mentioned in a previous comment, of going rancid? Subscribed now, thanks, from Chris in England.
@ShelCPaperOcotilloStudio5 жыл бұрын
Hi Christina :) I think cornflower would be fine. The powder gets trapped in the polymers of the paint so it would be encapsulated and not exposed to bacteria and moisture. I used the baby powder because it smells nice :)
@floradiamonds5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply. I posted my query before you mentioned corn starch; is there a difference between the two powders? I'm aware that there are often different names for the same things between North America and the UK, and of course different things with the same name, just to confuse us all! Yes, the baby powder does smell lovely, and brings back memories of my children, and eventually their own babies. I shall try this technique, and see how it works out for me. 😃

Thanks a lot for the great demo, but I'd like to ask a question : have you to dry one layer, before applying another one ? Proceeding as you do in the video, I'm not happy with the result ... - Or, maybe there's another reason for my "artwork" ! 🙄
@ShelCPaperOcotilloStudio5 жыл бұрын
Hi :) Yes, I do let the layers mostly dry...but remember I live in a dry climate so it is fairly easy to do that..I don't wait really. Also, the number one problem people have with my style of printing is applying too much paint. Make sure they are thin thin layers and you will be much more happy. You might notice I never have 'ghost' prints because I lift pretty much all the paint in one go.

Hi Shel C, question for you... I finally got around to trying this technique out on my 9x12 Gelli Arts plate and discovered that the baby powder left permanent indentations on the plate... has that happened to you? At first I didn’t care ‘cause I loved the texture they made in subsequent prints. But when I finished my printing session for the day and cleaned the plate, I noticed that the little craters remained. Any suggestions? I realize I can always flip the plate over for future prints.... and keep this side for baby powder techniques only. I also tried the 16x20 plate and it makes phenomenal prints for adhering to canvass or wood panels!

Hmm..no this did not happen to me at all. The powder just came up with the paint. Also asked my friend Peg and she tried graphite powder and had no pitting. Also, Mary Beth Shaw from Stencilgirl products has been using my technique in her demos and has had no problem. Weird! I did get a permanent indent in my plate when I stacked something on top of it once though so I know it can happen...I just flipped it over and now i pay attention when I am doing something new LOL I don't have a 16X20 plate but I bet that is fun!

Shel C thanks so much for getting back with me. It is weird! The plate was brand new and I made sure to follow your video as I tried this. The print results are delectable... incredibly pretty, but the pitting of the plate remains. Could it be that my baby powder was too old? I used some that I’ve had for years because I only use it to get grease stains out of clothes prior to washing them . The powder has to be 5-6 years old and is made by Johnson & Johnson. Again, thanx so much for helping me figure this out. Maybe I’ll get some fresh powder from the $ store before trying this on my big plate. 😊

I guess there is a possibility that the old powder somehow deteriorated into some sort of a chemical that reacted with the chemicals in the plate? I would try using just straight cornstarch on the plate instead..it does the same thing but does not have the chemical binders and fragrance in it.

Is this corn starch or talc??? "Baby powder" isn't just one thing here... Talc is getting hard to find and more expensive...but this is a couple years old

I use the cornstarch kind.
